- Myanmar: Setback For Junta As Rebel Groups Capture Another Town in Rakhine
A Myanmar ethnic minority armed group claimed control of Buthidaung town in western Rakhine state. Clashes have been ongoing since the armed rebel group called Arakan Army attacked security forces in November that ended a ceasefire in place since the 2021 military coup. The Arakan Army has taken territory along the border with India and Bangladesh, adding pressure on the junta. The group announced on Saturday via its Telegram channel that they seized all Myanmar Army bases in Buthidaung in northern Rakhine state, including a military strategic headquarters, without providing further details. Meanwhile, Rohingya activists in Rakhine state accused rebel group of torching houses where people of the community lived during their offensive.
