  • Why are Myanmar’s Ethnic Armies always at War? | Flashback with Palki Sharma
Myanmar is said to have around 135 ethnic groups, many of them with their own territory and army. Since its independence in 1948, Myanmar has struggled to create a national identity and put down rebellions by ethnic armies. Many military experts consider Myanmar’s internal conflict to be the longest-running civil war in the world. The latest one involves fighting between a coalition of ethnic groups and the ruling junta. The rebel groups are said to hold an edge and control up to 60% of Myanmar’s total territory. Why do so many ethnic armies operate in Myanmar? How did the fighting first break out? Palki Sharma tells you on Flashback.

Thank you, Palki, for this insightful video. Your detailed exploration into Myanmar’s 80-year history of conflicts is a crucial piece that adds much-needed depth to the often surface-level discussions focused solely on the past three years and the democracy narrative. It's essential to understand these complexities, as the situation in Myanmar is not just black and white-it resembles a powder keg of various interest groups, much like the historical challenges faced by the former Yugoslavia.
Your analysis complements the personal narrative and contemporary scenes I explored in my recent video, where I aimed to capture the everyday emotions and cultural vibrancy against the backdrop of Myanmar’s historical setting. Together, I believe our videos can offer viewers a fuller picture of Myanmar’s rich yet tumultuous tapestry. Great work on raising awareness about these crucial issues

In Vietnam, we have 54 ethnic groups. However, the policy of the Vietnamese government is to promote ethnic harmony and prioritize remote and disadvantaged areas. This includes providing benefits to minority ethnic groups, such as free education or reduced tuition fees. The government also ensures religious equality, treating all religions fairly without any bias. In Vietnam, you can find a Buddhist temple right next to a monastery or a Catholic or Protestant church. All members of society are treated fairly, without discrimination, in the fields of education and economics (except for certain historical reasons where some government agencies restrict the participation of certain population groups to prevent internal espionage).
As an ethnic Kinh person (the majority ethnic group in Vietnam), I sometimes feel envious when I see that minority ethnic groups receive more favorable treatment in terms of waived tuition fees and other welfare benefits provided by the government. However, we understand that these are rights that minority ethnic groups deserve in order to integrate into life and improve their economic well-being. Our motto is “no one left behind.” As a result, Vietnam’s poverty rate has decreased from over 50% in 1986 to less than 3% today, and we rank 35th in the world in terms of GDP. Thanks to peace, political stability, and good foreign policies, we are proud to be an ideal destination for foreign investors, including companies like Apple, Samsung, Intel and Nvidia... Vietnamese people cherish peace and always yearn for it. We understand the value of peace more than anyone else.
I hope that everywhere in the world, there will be no more hunger, poverty, or wars.

Would like to point out one thing, at timespan 9:30 , it's shown Kachin map which is actually Naga territory. Naga self administered zone in Myanmar.
Nagaland was divided between India and Myanmar without the knowledge of Nagas,
In India: Nagas are divided to four states - arunachal pradesh such as wancho, nocte etc, assam- rengmas etc, Manipur- Mao, poumai, tangkhul etc, and Nagaland.
Again In Myanmar it's divided into 4 regions or states
    1.Naga self administered zone
    2. Saigang state.
    3. Chin state
    4. Kachin state
But one day, we Nagas will live together United as One again,
And lastly no Myanmar kingdom ever conquer Nagas, not Manipur, not Ahoms which defeated Mughals, even British Empire could only defeat few village but they put entire Naga maps as under British which is not true, they didn't conquer even 1:00 map of nagas

Regarding the situation in Myanmar, it's not merely an ethnic conflict but a struggle for justice between citizens and the military junta.

This is the main reason behind insurgency in NE India. And Nagaland is still fight against the illegal occupation of Indian in their homeland.

Thank you for calling the EAO's Ethnic Armies instead of 'rebels'. They are militias who are protecting their own territories, but due to their own differences of opinion or ideology or aims and objectives, they fight amongst themselves, just like ethnic tribes in any nation, including in India. India should understand that this kind of fighting is nothing new, since your country has had in-fighting between tribes and ethnic groups since the beginning of Indian civilization.

I think the broadcaster is wrong in mentioning Chin & Rohinga States in northwest of Myanmar map. There are only Chin and Rakhine States there. I do not recall any record on ethnicity named Rohinga during the colonial times. It must have been started mentioning of it in the 80s after the conflicts at the border of Bengladesh and Rakhine State after which Myanmar had to accept the Bengali people returning from Bengladesh.

India must learn from its' past mistakes and move forward as a hero of former British colonies by representing the Indian Federal model. Also, by not getting involved militarily, nor dictating to its' neighbors, but as a supporter of all sides diplomatically and justly. It is doable and I believe that India could turn both Myanmar and Sri Lanka into an Indian style governance where all ethnic groups are represented within the unity and 'territorial integrity' of each country. It is not too late for India to turn a new leaf as I'm not going to explain about the past.

It's amazing how countries that were prepared to use extreme violence to "persuade" colonial powers to acquiesce to their independence are, when independent, equally prepared to use extreme violence to suppress any of their own regions' desire for independence.
And yet they also continue to berate ex-empire countries for acts that occurred during the colonial period. One might describe this as a dysfunctional combination of hypocrisy and irony. This is especially so when a region that itself would like to be independent is squabbled over most bloodily by partitioned ex-colonies.

Learn the difference between colonial powers and one's own people. One is to avoid civil war and fragmentation and the other is to avoid slavery and exploitation. Just because kicking out foreigners is right you don't kick out your own family.

#Since day one (Independence from UK) Burma was unable to put into a strong Constitution reflecting ‘Social Values’ listed as:
    1. ‘Social Values’ (Equality, Brotherhood Spirit) among multi ‘Ethnic Races’ are not addressed by Army Dictators since day one:
    2. Army Dictators (mostly “Burman” Race) behave like they are supreme towards multi ‘Ethnic Races’ living in the country:
    3. A strong Constitution (Social Contract between Citizens & Govt) to reflect these social values do not exist till to date 2024.
    # Due lack of such a strong Constitution, conflicts broke out between the Army & multi ‘Ethnic Races’
    # Now Army coup (Feb ’21) has caused a huge “Social Upheaval” which become too hard to fix back since it become a war between total population (all National Races) against the Army.
    # Citizens lost trust in the Army, thru reality, that its intention is to grip onto power anyway, anyhow no matter what.
    # With this Army’s mindset (using “force” as only option) and opposition forces who are determined to close Army’s chapter in Burma - that could end up in a Civil War; that is what happens NOW.

Why didn't your forefather think about these values.
Your leaders didn't have the vision of future and unification of country.
Buddhism taught non voidance and harmony but Myanmar doesn't adopt it.
