    Oberyn won the fight in every meaning, he only failed to live long enough to appreciate his multifaceted victory.
    Literal defeat of the Mountain? Check.
    Got the confession? Check.
    Tywin was implicated as having order the atrocities? *Oh yeah, that’s a check*
    My head theory is that Howland was actually a savant of combat, he just doesn’t like to show off. Hence why those squires are Harrenhal beat him up-he didn’t feel like thrashing three dumb teenagers that day and so took mercy. Lyanna understandably misunderstood the situation and thus hijinks ensued.

      I don't think that Arthur even died and the only way I can see Howland winning a fight is with poison darts. I think Dayne is alive and is masquerading as Mance Rayder. (I go with the theory that Jon is actually Ned and Ashara Dayne's kid.) Jon is a very good fighter, so good that he fights three vs one as a training exercise. But when he fights Mance (who is masquerading as the Lord of Bones) Mance absolutely beats him six ways to Sunday with almost 0 effort. And what weapon was he using when he fought Jon? A Greatsword.

    Honestly what would realistically make the mountain terrifying is that the most reliable way to beat plate is to grapple, and who in their right mind would wrestle the mountain.

    • @TheFandomeClips
      @TheFandomeClips  Před 4 měsíci +76

      Bobby, Sandor and Greatjon are the only guys who could do it i think, and they are definitely the underdog in that tussle! And you are right! This is why people like even Dayne and Jaime have to be careful, the go to way to beat Gregors armor is off the table! Thanks for watching My lord of Spud! Liam

      I don't think grappling is the standard way to defeat anybody with a sword in their hand

    • @potatolord2196
      @potatolord2196 Před 4 měsíci +64

      @coryb8432 A sword can't cut through armor, one of the most common methods was to enter a grapple and use a dagger to find a gap in the armor, watch actual armored sparring and you'll realize most of the time it turns into a wrestling match, just with knives.

    • @TheStraightestWhitest
      @TheStraightestWhitest Před 4 měsíci +17

      This is why in the past I have said that realistically nobody beats Gregor. In the setting of ASOIAF, sure. But not if this took place in our world. You basically can't beat plate armor without use of a dagger in between the weak spots (See Netflix's The King for a good example of this in fiction) or something like an ice pick or billhook rammed between the vitals. I've also done HEMA, and my past experience in Judo and BJJ made me absolutely dominate people that were far better at the actual fencing bit than I was just because all I had to do was deflect one attack to get into grappling range where I could treat them like babies. That grappling threat is real, and grappling always favors the bigger man.
      Now it is firmly established that Gregor isn't unskilled or stupid. He's heinous beyond words, but not ignorant. He knows the weakness of armor. He knows the weakness of his weapon. His fight IQ isn't even trash. His skill isn't nothing, it's just quite basic. But a man with basic skill who has downright superhuman strength and stands 8ft tall at 400+lbs? Unbeatable in plate armor. You'd have to get within his range, and he'd rip you limb from limb if you do. The only ones who could win or at least hold their own are, as Liam suggested above, possibly Sandor and the Greatjon. Even Bobby B wouldn't considering he was ''only'' 6'6 himself and therefore just not enough of a physical match. People really underestimate how much size matters. 20lbs of a physical disparity is already massive in a fight. Most boxing weightclasses go by 4-8lbs. Most MMA ones go by 10lbs. Imagine a disparity of what, 200lbs? And that's assuming guys like Jaime or Dayne are 200lbs, which we don't actually know. 200lbs is already a big man. But for reference, the difference in size between someone of 200lbs against The Mountain is the equivalent of putting Jake Paul up against Brian Shaw. Even though Shaw is less skilled, he'd rip him apart effortlessly just based on size.
      Realistically if you had to grapple The Mountain, you're dead. And realistically, you do. That's why this is basically impossible. The sole exception would be some giant with a polearm (like Greatjon Umber maybe), or someone of almost equal size but superior skill, stamina and speed. There's only one guy like that, and that's The Hound.

    • @potatolord2196
      @potatolord2196 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @TheStraightestWhitest Honestly I think the best comparison would be Mike Tyson in our world. The strategy for beating both is the same, wear them down and play for time, but for both that is a task much easier said than done, because one small mistake and it is over. The only way I could see someone who isn't some legendary warrior beating him is though asymmetrical tactics, and that isn't really an option in an official duel, aside from grabbing a bow and praying for a lucky shot.

    Hard disagree on show Ned.
    People want him to be more of a leader than a fighter because it compliments his character (and he may well be in the books) but based on its own content, show Ned is not an above average fighter - he is a freaking excellent fighter.
    Barristan (and I think Jaime too?) says he saw Ned at the Trident and Siege of Pike slay “a dozen great knights” and fight like a hero.
    Then an aged and out of his prime Ned holds his own against a young and in his prime Jaime.
    Then a young and prime Ned easily defeats one kings guard at the Tower of Joy and holds his own for a long time against the single greatest swordsman of all time in the show - Dayne. The men who went with Ned to the Tower were not average fighters - they were elite, experienced, trained nobles. The Kings Guard who Ned easily killed was not an average fighter, he was an elite, top 20 fighter in the kingdom.
    These are not feats of an above average fighter, this is categorically a top 10-15 fighter in the kingdom arguably top 3-7. Again, I get that we don’t want Ned to be this awesome but it’s time to look at facts and admit the show isn’t the books.
    John is an above average fighter. Jorah is an above average fighter. Tormond is an above average fighter. Show Ned is elite to the level of standing his ground against the GOAT and easily defeating the hand picked top 5 knight in the kingdom (kings guard).

      I think Ned had a couple reasons he could do it
      Everyone is familiar with Ned being an Honor-tryhard
      and his counterfeit victory over Dayne would have put him on a course to becoming a master swordsman if so only he wouldn't be living the lie of 'besting the GOAT' Ned would definitely become the thing he was awarded in error.
      second; Ned has Ice - the 2Handed Valyrian greatsword
      One of the few weapons in creation that can dismantle The Mountain's full plate.
      It can parry without breaking, it's a weapon he's known his whole life.
      unfortunately Ned being Ned would never seek 'trial by combat' (for himself)
      this is a purely hypothetical situation

      The Mountain and soldiers of the like are not used in the battlefield for the same reason that Bears and (lol) Elephants aren't. One exceptionally valid soldier/unit, in reality, whoever he is, is never more than 4 or 5 spear strikes (if surrounded, that's NOTHING, milliseconds on a battlefield) from death at any time. General rule being importance = value = keep them behind. The exceptions to the rule are those who're strategizing (Robb, Jon in BOTB at first) at the back, leading and commanding. If your commander/lead officer is fighting in the melee, you're either desperate or making a mistake. I have no doubts Tywin especially knew The Mountain was best used at tournaments and as a feared commander where his fear factor was more useful than his actual potential kill count on a battlefield.
      This is literally why Oniondad shits the bed when Jon REEEEEE charges after Rickon gets converted into 100 experience points by Ramsay.

      well in history knights used swords for cutting down the common folks and would typically avoid each other, the cases of knights really trying to end each other in war are very rare considering the raw number of battles of the centuries very few noble knights ever died. Cowards really, and in dueling tournaments they also did not used weapons that were anti armor as they did not want to cause other knights to die or die themselves.

    Jaime losing his smile in the show was exactly how you explained it. He thought it was going to be easy, and Ned knew it was gonna be tough. Therefore Ned tries his hardest all the way through and at the end after he sees Jaime losing his smile he smiles, cause he is proud of how long he lasted and that he managed to, at least a little bit, humble that arrogant brat. But that didn't mean he was a threat to Jaime. Jaime knew he couldn't be holding back anymore and had to end it quick. A theory I also once had is that he didn't lose his smile because Ned proved to be better than Jaime thought, but worse. At this point Jaime thinks Ned defeated Arthur Dayne, but while duelling him he sees that Ned was too bad to acomplish that. He is starting to catch on that something was off about that story. I don't it is true, but It could be another way to look at this fight.

    Another point against Beric is that he wasn't sent to hunt down the Mountain because Ned considered him a better fighter. Ser Loras was easily the better fighter, but Ned chose Beric believing that Loras was wanting revenge instead of justice, insulting the Knight of Flowers in the process.
    Beric was smart enough to seek the aid of Thoros and Anguy because they respectively won the melee and archery tourneys.
    If Ned had tasked Ser Loras with hunting down the Mountain, Loras would have been far more cunning in who he asked to help him hunt down the Mountain. Yes, Thoros and Anguy were tourney champions. However, Loras would have wanted the aid of someone who he knew already stood up to the Mountain, and that is the Hound.
    This would have also created a pretext for Loras to ride into the Kingswood and bring news of the Mountain's raiding to King Robert (possibly preventing his death). Loras would have retained command of the host to hunt down the Mountain, but would have been able to recruit Sandor Clegane and even Ser Barristan Selmy.
    Seven Hells, it would give Robert a chance to get off his butt and hunt the most dangerous game (man) rather than a white stag or regicidal boar.

    I still don't think he would be the Mountain but there's to say that Jorah in the books is huge as a bear, like most Mormonts. Not as monstrous as Gregor but still a huge, muscled armor-clad man, he's most definetely above average.

    • @TheFandomeClips
      @TheFandomeClips  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Oh for sure, I don't think Jorah is a slouch and he'll definitely be extremely strong for his size. I just remember Dany noting that he was noticeably shorter than Barristan, most people guesstimate that Barristan is 6 to 6.4ft tall. So Jorah could be 5.9ft to maybe 6ft tall, so not short but definitely heavily on the back foot of size and strength vs Gregor. But for the Dothraki to know and respect Jorah as a swordsman, that for me tells me he was probably an absolute force to be reckoned with when he was younger, just not enough to beat the Mountain. I think even the greats like Dayne and Jaime are going to struggle trying to take a sword vs that monster.

Would a traditional knight with a traditional game plan (regardless of skill) have had a chance? I'm genuinely not sure. Guys like Jaime and Barristan that are noted for their ability maybe, but I really struggle with Ned, and IMO the Hound would have struggled too, you make the point about the bigger brute with Victarian, so I think the same reasoning stands on why he'd struggle against his brother.

      I'd imagine... none, at least not without some plot advantage on par with dragons. At the time of the conquest, house Hoare was on a bit of an expansionist streak, having previously conquered most of the Riverlands and some of the Stormlands, and were working on a giant castle from which they could go up against the rest, but it's doubtful if that could have succeeded even if the Targaryens hadn't melted Harrenhall. But I think it would be likely that should Hoare had tried to move on the North, for example, Durrandon and/or Lannister would have taken advantage and tried to move on them.

    Medieval historian here: it doesn't matter how well made a sword is. The best metal sword in the world would never cut through the worst metal sword in the world. WOuld it lave a dent or shatter? Sure, if both swing hard enough. But it won't cut. This is even more true for plate armour. No sword in the world will cut through or even meaningfully pierce reasonable plate armour. You win through force (for example the Mordhau, in which you use the crossguard and pommel als some kind of a hammer or special fencing technique that allows you to pin your opponent, draw your dagger and stab through the visor. You need force. That's the reason swords are becoming less and less important in the medieval ages and other weapons (as pollaxes, warhammers or polearms) are more popular. It doesn't even matter how hard the sword is, you couldn't cut or pierce a steel harness with a titanium or tungsten blade. As we all know: Force equals mass times acceleration: A lighter (meaning less mass) sword (such as in valyrian steel, titanium or mithril) doesn't really make sense, except for pure fencing weapons, that are not used against full armour. But most authors don't really get that.

    @11:56 There are multiple historical examples in the books (Fire and Blood, A World of Ice and Fire, etc.) of warriors wielding Valyrian Steel swords losing to warriors with regular swords, either due to the latter having a physical or skill advantage, the former being tired from battle and/or wounded, or both. And those examples we know actually happened due to the Valyrian Steel swords changing ownership as result of their former owner's death. These seem a lot less plausible if we are to believe that Valyrian Steel can just no-sell any normal sword or armor it hits, so it's very likely that Fandome is right about this.

    IIRC, the axe Victarion Greyjoy used was a boarding axe, which is similar to a modern firefighting axe - smaller than a battle axe and designed to function as both a weapon and a climbing tool for getting onto ships with higher sides than an Ironborn longship. One good point as a weapon against the Mountain is that the reverse side of the axe blade is a spike that might be able to punch through plate armor with a hard enough swing. However, you’d be much better off with a halberd, which has the same type of head but significantly heavier and at the end of a pole long enough to give you the reach advantage over Gregor’s greatsword.

    King Robert is the most overhyped fighter in GOT. People act like he's this monster of a man with superhuman strength, but in reality he wasn't even as big as the Hound. Rhaegar Targaryen was a good fighter but he was just an average sized man and he injured Robert so bad that he couldn't continue to travel after they fought. When it comes to experience he only began his fighting career in his own rebellion where he fought in a handful of battles (and people consider this his prime) Robert was a brute standing at 6ft6 and he was very strong, but like you said he was just a smaller brute than the Mountain, standing at 8ft tall with super physiological strength. The Mountains sword is bigger than Robert's war hammer. Robert was always paired up with Ned in a duo, which could indicate that they were on a similar level when it comes to fighting. Bar killing Rhaegar Robert has no feats. Its the classic 'because he is king' he gets hyped up, but he's actually not even that good.

Warriors from other franchises who can beat the Mountain you say? I've got two. Conan the Cimmerian (The story version. In certain stories he wears full plate and wields a greatsword in one hand.) Talking about Ice people frequently over estimate how heavy swords are. Ice would weigh about 4-5 lbs at the very most and likely less than because of the materials. The primary reason swords of that size wernt used often is not because they’re unwieldy it was because they were always more effective reach weapons available, and swords were primarily carried as a side arm. If you’re already carrying a halberd you wouldn’t also need to carry a great sword etc.

    • @TheFandomeClips
      @TheFandomeClips  Před 3 měsíci

      Oh I've done HEMA I know what we call a greatsword or warsword isn't as heavy as people think. If you listen to that section you'll notice the audio has been cut and stitched together. Thats because Thom for some reason decided to cut out my HEMA rant about how greatswords are a touch more unwieldy than a longsword due to their size and how they build more momentum in the swing but they do move quick once you get them going and aren't as heavy as people think but it's a bit harder to change direction or stop mid swing than a longsword (thats my personal experience of them) , but I made a point about the size of Ice. Its a whooping big Greatsword...... even by greatsword standards (this bit was obviously cut) . Only one sword is described as bigger in the entire series and its Greatjons (A guy who is 7ft tall and from the description of how wide he is might be built even bigger than Gregor Clegaine). That section orginally had me basically saying Ice would be unwieldy to Ned because its not made for someone his size and is more suited to someone like Gregor, Greatjon, Sandor and maybe Bobby B to wield with finesse. I don't blame Thom though, I'm guessing that section messed with the flow and pace of the video, but yeah it leaves me with egg on my face a little 😂

    Fun bit of trivia: Bjornsson was the shortest of the three actors to play the Mountain at 6’9”. The others were both seven-footers, but he was by far the most massive. At his heaviest, when he was training to break the world deadlift record, Halfthor weighed about 440-450 pounds. So we was basically as massive as the book character despite being more than a foot shorter.
    Bjornsson slimmed down to 335 a couple years ago when he took up boxing.
    Seriously, though, Martin erred really low when he described the mountain. Assuming an eight-foot-tall man with The Mountain’s proportions existed he’d probably weigh something more like a quarter ton. There have been a handful of accurately measured eight-foot humans but all of them had growth disorders & they typically weren’t what you’d call healthy.
    A little over seven-foot is about the limit for humans before the body starts having major issues just functioning.

    People misuse warrior all the time. A warrior isn't just a fighter. A warrior is someone skilled in the art of war. Ned is a great warrior. He's level headed and smart on the battlefield and he won more battles than he lost. The Starks in general seem to have a good head for war and are good leaders. Rob, and Jon were also shown to be effective battlefield commanders and smart strategists. That doesn't mean they are great fighters. But there's a reason those two words aren't the same word.
