    Despite Tom saying "Of course he's alive" about the end of Best of Both worlds (Part 1), they were actually considering having Riker take over the show since they hadn't confirmed Stewart's contract going forward. So it was a real possibility that he would have been killed off.

      The O'Brien episode in DS9 was infinitely better than the flute man. O'Brien actually goes crazy and thinks he's a horrible monster even though it was all a computer simulation of him being in prison for 20 years. Of course it gets ignored in later episodes, but at least it tries...

    I think something a lot of fans of older sci fi like Star Trek struggle to accept is that while they had a lot of great episodes and introduced the average person to a lot of interesting concepts it’s almost inevitable that those concepts have been done better since then

    • @kitolz
      @kitolz Před 2 lety +1

      That's called the Seinfeld effect. At the time it was a pioneer concept, blazing the trail. But since it's been further refined modern watchers see it as a cliche or underwhelming. A lot of modern sitcoms owe a lot to the Seinfeld show, but since the concepts have been iterated on so much, it doesn't feel original anymore.

      @@lilyeves892 I haven't read the books, so I can only speak for the original and the new Dune movie, but I personally prefer the Force in Star Wars to the powers in Dune, and the Empire in Warhammer 40k to the one in Dune. Again, only from what I've seen in the movies, and I know a lot more about Star Wars then Dune. I generally don't like chosen ones at all, but if have to pick, probably Avatar? Since being the Avatar isn't tied to a specific prophecy, but one single person still has a grand duty and get's granted the powers to follow it, in their own way.
      All in all, maybe it's just that people hyped up Dune for years online, but when I saw the movies I just thought "Yeah, it's ok.", but I don't know.

  • @Orillion123456
    @Orillion123456 Před 2 lety +37

    To be fair, Tom did the flute episode quite a disservice by how he summed it up to barry.
    It's a nice episode, both in the concept and in it's execution, and "yeah he just plays a flute the entire time" is quite unfair.
    But also to be fair, it's not the best of star trek, nor the best of TV, so comments overreacted a lot there.
    On another note:
    I liked the premise of measure of a man, but not the execution. The episode very much frustrated and infuriated me even when I watched it as a kid, because it was inconceivable that any system of justice could be that dysfunctional and arbitrary (I only learned about what courts are like in the US many years later, and was even more disheartened than by this episode) ESPECIALLY given that the federation is supposedly a futuristic utopia.
