    Here's a thought: most of a security officer's work isn't repelling invaders, it's dealing with conflicts between crewmates. Data lacks the social awareness to do that.

    There are a few things you need to understand about Star Trek, Tom.
    1) Picard is the most English Frenchman in existence
    2) Troi has the uncanny ability to sense things that have just happened right in front of her
    3) You become insane and evil once you get too many promotions.
    4) In a crew of several hundred there are only ever like seven people who can ever do anything ever.
    5) The first couple seasons always suck and then everyone decides they love it

    In the Star Trek Lower Decks cartoon, they call the exaggerating the time it takes to do something 'buffer time'

    • @adm_ezri
      @adm_ezri Před 2 lety +12

      b'ellana says something on the topic in voyager. janeway asks how long something will take, torres gives an estimate. janeway say's you've got a fraction of that, torres says no. this is how long it takes. this is how long I'm telling you. it was a pretty satisfying moment ngl

      @@adm_ezri I need to rewatch Voy, nearly finished DS9 again, so good!

  • @DistinctionDave
    @DistinctionDave Před 2 lety +7

    The first point is kinda highlighted in Voyager, and lampooned in Below Decks. Torres gives Janeway an estimate, Janeway goes, "No, get it done in half that time," and Torres basically goes, "Bitch, I don't exaggerate. It's gonna take the time I said." In Below Decks, when they realise that the crew could be far more efficient and have been padding their estimates, they work them too hard and it eventually all goes to pot.
    Voyager is still my favourite, despite its flaws. I love the idea of a poor crewman on Voyager who has to share bunks with someone else. "Wait, we just lost a third of the crew. Surely there are some single quarters available? I mean, we're on this ship for 75 years."
    "Nah, sorry, that hedgehog man and child bride we picked up snagged the last one. And they get to go to the senior staff briefings and lead teams and stuff, even though she's a one-year-old and he's basically just a trader."
    "Right, so why don't we at least train some science staff to replace the medical team that ALL died? You know, so we don't have to rely on a single hologram that blinks out of existence the moment we lose power?"
    "Nah, that one-year-old can do it. And if she leaves, then we'll just stick our most experienced pilot and fourth-in-command in there. He took six months of medic training. You know, before he went to jail."

    I can't believe He didn't talk about Riker telling Picard to shut up. It's in that episode, "Future Imperfect." Also, my favorite part is at the end the alien tells Riker his real name. Riker replies "You'll always be Jean-Luc to me" which is such a shitty thing to tell someone.

    Whoever said Spot is allowed to wander the ship is wrong. I’m pretty sure it’s a plot point in one of the episodes that Spot escapes Data’s quarters when somebody else is watching her.

    • @ScrewYouThatsMyName
      @ScrewYouThatsMyName Před 2 lety +2

      Actually it was in an episode where the plot complication was that the ship was travelling through an area of space with random tiny ruptures in like the fabric of space(time?) or something, and when a rupture intersected with the ship, it temporarily created a hole that stuff could pass through, and one of the "clues" before they figured it out was that spot escaped datas quarters while he was away even though the door was not configured to open for him/her.
      Although (iirc) data also explains that he/she (spots gender changed between seasons) apparently escaped in order to become pregnant for the episode where spot has kittens, and he may also have said he/she had "escaped on several occasions."

    Worf is established to be pretty good at fighting in a few episodes, but the problem is the writers often use him as a plot device to establish how strong the alien of the week is. When worf is badass, hes really actually badass. Its rather frustrating.
