đŸïžAs smartphones now appear to play a significant role in the human experience, more motorcycle riders than ever before are depending on these handheld devices as their primary GPS navigation tool. After all, why fumble around with a dedicated GPS device, when our phones, these tools that do so much more than just GPS routing, can do the same. Often better, and more reliably.
I've been testing a couple of popular handlebar mounting options on the market, RAM's X-GripÂź and the Quad LockÂź system and have some comments that may help in your decision on which one of these is the best motorcycle phone mount for you.

I have had the x mount for awhile now, and have never used the rubber band. I have never had an issue. The quadlock looks like a better setup, but having to use their case is a deal breaker for me. I have to have a lifeproof style case for what I do.

Matt, great, but be careful, as not using all 4 corners of the rubber band is how that Rider lost his phone at 3:25 in the video. Fortunately, we rolled the camera like 0.5 seconds before this happened. Thanks for commenting, and RIDE on!

If you visit the Quad Lock website they sell a high quality 3M stick on quad lock attachment that can be stuck to a external case. So if you have a specific case you don't want to sway away from. You can buy the locking mount and stick it to the back of your phone case. This then allows you to use quad locks full range of mounting options.

@@vlogcentral9303 I looked at the quad lock attachment, and unfortunately, it specifies in the directions that it will not attach TPU, silicon, or rubber - something many phone cases are made of. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the Quad Lock, but as Matt said, it's kind of a deal breaker in not being able to use the case I currently have.
I personally have a Ram Mount X-Grip, and bought it over 10 years ago when I first got an iPhone 4. The mount worked great for the iPhone 4, 5, and 7 that I had; I replaced the X-Mount itself in November when I decided to upgrade my iPhone to the 11 Pro, which wouldn't fit in the X-Grip that I had. I still have the mount itself, but over time, I had to replace the rubber tips, as RIDE Adventures mentioned had wearing and fell off. I will admit that mine hasn't had problems in that entire time (except for the suction cup mount starting to stretch and fade - but it turns out that RAM Mounts have a lifetime warranty on it, and that's not the X-Grip itself being reviewed here), and I haven't used mine in an off-road, dirt laden, temperature changing environment such as those that RIDE Adventures guides and clients go through, so mine may not have gotten the same wear as theirs. :)
I think both mounting systems have their pros and cons, as listed, and I like the idea of the quick lock, rotating system - but I would see the case as a deal breaker - and I would likely have to move it further in on my windshield in my car, so that I could twist it in and not hit the A-Pillar. Likely, this is not a problem motorcyclists would encounter, but it's certainly something to consider as another possible issue. The X-Grip works best for my situation; I'm glad the Quad Lock works best for the reviewer's situation. :)

I've been using the RAM MOUNT unit for 4 years now with all 3 of my bikes and I've never had any issues. I've taken a 5 country tour, used 3 phones and still have the original rubber bands. I can't see buying 2 or 3 more cases to use a quad lock that's probably going to destroy my camera anyway. I've still got the 4 rubber bumpers but even if I didn't I still have the phone case of my own desire plus the small rubber pieces can be bought extra. The only good thing I see about the quad lock is that it doesn't obscure the screen which isn't a problem for me since I've got a massive phone anyway... Lol. I'm riding on the autobahn every now and then so I'll stick with my RAM MOUNT :)

  • @ChuckFranco
    @ChuckFranco Pƙed 3 lety +9

So I've been using Quadlock for a few years now and I love it. Although I do hate a few stuff about it.
First off, I hate the fact that I have to have a dedicated phone case for it and each time I upgrade my phone I have to buy another case. I personally don't like to use the quad lock phone case on a daily basis since it's bulky. I'm a slim case kind of guy. So I would always have to switch cases before riding my bike, sometimes I would lose my case and have to look for it around the house since I don't use it very often.
Another issue I have with the quad lock is, when you first purchase the case and mount, it would be rock solid and won't wiggle at all. After a while, there would be a significant wiggle when the phone is fully secured on the mount which will vibrate like crazy while riding and will lead to a broken phone camera. The new vibration dampening device is great but that isn't where the issue is, the issue is the actual locking mechanism. the teeth of the mechanism to lock both cases and mount gets shaven off over time, that's what makes it vibrate even with the anti-vibration attachment.
I've switched to the RAM mount recently so I could just use one case and one case alone and wouldn't have to worry about the locking mechanism being loose over time. It definitely is a lot bulkier but it works a lot better for me.

    • @RIDEAdventures
      @RIDEAdventures  Pƙed 3 lety +2

Interesting, as yes, that would be one major bonus that the RAM X-Grip comes with: The ability to fit a wide variety of case sizes and thicknesses. We've even reviewed the RAM Quick-Grip since this video, but that one might not handle thicker cases either. Thanks for sharing, good point.

The phones I had are highly water resistance so they did not break. They would just do odd things when rain directly hit the screen. I have started to use beeline and that seems to work well. If you combined both of these mounting technologies it would essentially be the ultimate unit.
In a minimalist way try to keep the steel arms of the ram mount and rubber corner slings away from the most common areas for the camera and secure, however not totally on the screen on the front side then just twist it on the mount and it is secure.
No need for a special case and totally secure. Pretty well a win win situation.

I have an Oneplus which is also not supported by quadlock. I bought the universal 3m sticker one and stuck it directly to the back of the phone. Unfortunately my phone turned out to have a non-stick coating resulting in the sticker coming loose. Luckily this was on my bicycle and I could grab my phone while it was bouncing around on the handle bars.
I've contacted Quadlock and they apologized and send me a new stick on universal mount. I've now stuck it on a non-rubber case for my phone and it is very solid. Have been using it ever since and it survived going over cobblestones while hardmounted on my racing bicycle so I would say it is solid enough. Just make sure you have a good case to stick it to

Quad Lock is by far the best one I've used so far, both on my KTM SuperDuke and my KTM Adventure 1190R. Big negative is you have to basically buy either a popular Samsung or Iphone, that's it. I've been using waterproof Sony mobile phones for years and I got the best results with the Touratech I-brackets for my Sony's. But once I got the Quad lock with their in-house compact handlebar mount, I don't want to go back any more. So I'm stuck with a Samsung S10 now. Good reviews. I had a Ram X mount for a few years. For the first few years it was great. However, humidity was wearing into the rubber holders on mine and softening them up. Over time they would leave a black residue on my phone case, until one day on the highway doing about 80, one of the rubber holders fell apart and in effect my phone shot out of the holder. By some miracle I put my hand there in time and barely caught it. I had to pull over to put my phone in my jacket pocket. When I got home and inspected I realized all of them were melting like this and i got rid of it.
I picked up a Quad Lock case, and while locking the phone on and off takes some getting used to, its as solid as a rock. I even got a mount for road and mountain bicycles when I ride and just ordered one for my car. Never going back to RAM

We'd be interested in testing one, but from the images seen on the website, it looks like it has similar challenges we found with the X-Grip (perhaps two hands needed to wrap the rubber corners, and then those rubber corners cover parts of the screen, etc.) Have you used one yet?

The latest iPhone camera stabiliser does not like being mounted on motorbike handlebars, in short it ruins it, I had to get camera replaced. I don’t have phone mounted anymore.

I have the quad lock and it has been great however....
I'm in a rtw ride from australia to the UK and twice the case has failed and warn out. I'm on my second quad lock now and after just 5000km the case has fully disintegrated at the top, the phone stays locked but it wiggles around roughly 2inches and is only getting worse.

Interesting, and this 'possible' wearing out was even mentioned as a Con in the video. Good share, thanks for the info. Looks by other comment that they have you covered though.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was some unique user error. I’ve been using quadlock for a long time and the case is really durable.

As below I had a quad lock case mounted onto the 1” Ram mount on my Zx10R but it’s caused damage to my IPhone XR. The camera does not focus. Emailed Quadlock whose reply was “the damage seems to be isolated to the camera image stabilisation mechanism of the phone and appears to be caused by the high level of vibration experienced on some motorbikes. Certain combinations of phone and motorbike seem more susceptible than others but we are still gathering information and do not have a complete picture at this time” as stated they are working on a Dampening system to rectify but buyers beware as it cost me nearly £100 to get the camera fixed. 2 others I ride with have different bikes, mountings and newer IPhones and they have had the same issue

Good info, thanks for sharing. Just curious, were you using a RAM ball or the Quad Lock Moto Mount kit? We'd like to start getting some info on complete setups, and maybe we can give feedback to all on which setups may lead to damage. --- Bummer about your camera.

Yes, this is my main concern as well. Bikes are known to ruin OIS cameras on phones.
Quad looks superior in most aspects, but rubber on X-Grip probably has better vibration dampening.

@@benjaminlawrence2864, thanks. Not far off it sounds like from what most folks are doing. Still curious to see if any of these mfg's can come up with a solution to avoid all vibration damage. It's a tough situation for them: Too tight and firm, OR too loose and 'vibratory' of a mount would put stress inside the phone. Wonder what the right/safest frequency of vibration is. Big topic for electronics engineers to comment on, if any are watching?

The ram x grip is old tech. Their newer grip mount is built solid and holds any size phone with case. It's a pressure mount slide grip and I have ridden many thousands of kilometres without an issue. A great mount and would have been a better updated comparison to the quad IMHO.

Yea, we're hearing about the newer Grip mount now, somehow missed it before doing this review a while back. When the rider lost his phone in that one moment in the video review, falling out from the X-Grip, that was in Thailand, for a fun BTW : )

Great video, thanks! I am on my 3rd iPhone 11 ProMax because I have been using a RAM mount to hold my phone on my bars of my dirt bike and the iPhone camera is destroyed in one ride (no crashing) due to all the banging around and vibration. The phone still works but it instantly kills the cameras. I was able to have the phones warrantied but I don't want to go thru that again. Is the anyone else having issues like me? Will the quadlock fix this? I'm scared to try as I am out of warranty now...

QuadLock has a vibration dampener you can add now, and yea, unfortunately, quite a few phones have been damaged from a variety of phone mounts in recent years. Not just RAM or QuadLock. Good luck, and thanks for sharing.

My experience - I had a problems with RAM mount - so one arm pushing turn off button on side of iPhone and you have to setting phone in the mount for while to avoid this. So, for me - Iam looking forward to buy quad lock system.

Brad, yea, looks like a few others have mentioned the one-handed Quick Grip being a better option. Interesting that so many folks are adoring the X-Grip still.....but maybe that has to do with a pretty steep price we see for that Quick Grip? Thanks for the note.
