I have both the locking and non-locking/wireless charging Peak Design 1” ball mounts which are pretty cheap comparatively, has built in vibration dampening, and I can easily swap between my motorcycles/bike/cars which all have existing ram mount setups. The case is also 👌🏻 (they have some cool accessories like wallets and stands etc if you’re into that) Also, not to ignore the most important part, mounting and dismounting is almost completely frictionless.
      I’m not an influencer/ambassador, just truly love good design and love their product which I bought with my own money. I was pleased to see that it also performed the best (according to their test metric anyway)

    Hey! Cool video as always! I do have one question though: In some of the cuts of footage from the accelerometer tests, I can see that the accelerometer is attached directly to the phone mount. Wouldn’t it be a much more representative test, with perhaps a different outcome, if you attached the accelerometer to a phone on the phone mount? Feels to me like the added mass could quite significantly impact your vibration tests!

    Absolutely one of the best channels on CZcams. The previous phone mount video is the only time I've ever seen overwhelmingly negative comments, and instead of just letting that slide you went and improved the video with math to backup your findings. Thanks to the team at Fortnine for continuing the unbelievable quality you've always had

    • @MotoDash1100
      @MotoDash1100 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Great job FortNine, you portrayed people who cared and commented as conspiracy nuts. So much respect for the community that thought you cared about details and good testing, as well as companies (SP Connect as an example) being upfront about vibrational damage and marketing claims (Quadlock as an example of a marketing claim that went fully untested).

    I use one of the RAM mounts and have not had any damage to my phones so far. I really like that it doesn't require any particular phone case (you can use your own or none at all) and the extra rubber "wings" are optional in normal street riding (just clamp it into the arms which takes only one second) and you can optionally strap it down if you're doing something rowdy. The flexibility in mounting is great, and you can do complicated or fancy stuff with multiple mounts if you're setting up a touring rig with other gear like map/GPS holders, cupholders, etc and everything interoperates.

You don't even have to think about attaching it to the mount it just snaps into place, and you can easily release your phone with one hand. agree 100% - I've had all 4 on trial here - the x-grip is great, as fits anything, but bulky and the rubbers will fail eventually - the sp-connect was fine, but I broke several and stripped the threads on the mounts (assume it's the pressed steel riv-but into alu) - the quadlock I first used many years ago, and was perfectly happy with, but the new mag-safe cases don't work with Apple's mag-chargers... it's a well discussed issue - 3rd party chargers seem to be o.k. ..... returned all my new mag-safe quadlock for a refund - then found Peak Designs.... the cases are a step above the SP & Quad, the mount is excellent, no twisting required, with the options e.t.c. being fantastic - recommend the peak design system

Lots of details missed. Even though don’t like ram mount they have a new quick connect mount that is apparently good. Also new cases from all manufacturers have recently upped their game. It’s kind of like this is what a video from 2021 would be like if someone who didn’t know much about mounts would do. I love the X-Grip for its ease of use and quick attachment to any phone with any case, plus the wide range of Ram Mount accessories you can use it with. I use it on my DR650 and it has never let go of my phone, (and I don't even bother with the extra rubber holder), both on rough pothole filled roads, and dumping the bike while offroad and pretending to be riding a 250cc dirtbike. It has, however, killed the optical image stabilizer in two iPhones, so there definitely must be some decent vibration going on.

While I agree that the ram mount is a bulky solution that's not necessarily going work for everyone I think the video severely under values the high universal fit of the ram x mount along with under estimating the value of a buy it once and use it for 8 plus years solution the ram mount can be.

I don't know if it's a design they're going with for newer phones, or if this is just how the mag cases come, but I haven't had any complaints about the case other than it being kind of thick and heavy.
    Quadlock is pretty expensive, but like RAM its an ecosystem with different mounts and accessories to choose from. I have the windscreen car mount with the mag charge head and it's straight up the most solid car mount I've ever used.

I don't know if I'd trust it on a bike over the classic, but it works great in the car. They've also held up very well, so it's a bit of a "buy once, cry once" scenario. They also now do accessory levers for the classic system so that you can swap the lever to something other than the blue which is nice if you happen to have a bike that's not blue.

    The overall vibrations are a function of the mount siffness and damping characteristics and the mass of the installed phone. They will behave as a system and that will dictate how they react dynamically (vibrate) when excited by the motorcycle.

    I've been through the gamut myself and bought most of these mounts at some point over the last few years. the ram mount was too big and bulky, and the rubber thing is super annoying to put on. But ram ball mounts are by far the best.
    I've settled on the quad lock BUT I hate the default arm they sell. I ended up getting ram ball mount and arm (metal version) . then quad lock sells a ram ball that bolts directly to the back of the wireless charging motorcycle head (with the vibration damper).
    They now sell a 12v one, but I wired mine through the battery disconnect that also runs my fog lights so it will turn off automatically with the ignition, with an sae 2 pole adapter to female USB, then ran the waterproof type A to type C cable the charger comes with up under the tank.
    One big thing for me as well is that I have the same mount in my car so my phone mounts to both easily and charges just by being on the mount.

    11:59 Can someone please explain to me how you can have (on average) 218% less of something? This would entail negative vibrations... The data itself is not intuitive either. Why are you comparing standard deviations as the main variables instead of averages? Why do you have one value of standard deviation even though you tested multiple RPM scenarios? What do the numbers and relations in the table actually mean? What is the test based on? That is excluding the million different variables that would change because you don't have a controlled environment. I really appreciate that the previous video was taken down and retested, but this still feels inadequate support.

    • @LukasHalda
      @LukasHalda Před 6 měsíci

      I was also thinking that the amplitude may not be the killer for the camera, but rather the acceleration. (Or jerk/shock? I'm not up to date on my physics, I mean the force pulling stuff faster in a different direction than its inertia.) You could expect the higher the amplitude, the higher the acceleration, but what if multiple smaller vibrations were dampened into one with higher amplitude but smaller force exerted on the camera?
      Edit: I may have misunderstood the video at first, thinking he's saying more deviation = bad, while actually his claim was more deviation = good. I'm still unsure what their conclusion really was though, and I replayed it couple times. The methodology there isn't very clear to me.

    • @CaptainChrom
      @CaptainChrom Před 6 měsíci

      @@LukasHaldathats exactly what the vibration dampeners do. Especially the one from quad lock. Its translates the many high frequency vibrations into höher frequemcy vibrations. This causes the mount to actually be more shaky causing the phone to wobble around more, but protects the OIS from the high frequencies which would destroy it.
      The OIS itself is a mount for the camera lens, which can be magnetically controlled to change the direction oft the lens. When it is exposed to very high frequencies the shaking caused by them cause it to move too much until it breaks. You can think of it like a bridge breaking itself apart due to strong winds in the right frequency, or a washing machine disassembling itself when a stone is put inside it causing it to vibrate uncontrollably.

    • @LukasHalda
      @LukasHalda Před 6 měsíci

      @@CaptainChromYes, that's what I meant, not sure I explained correctly.
      With that in mind, how does "standard deviation in the change of angle over XYZ axis" say anything about damage protection? Meaning the more wobble (deviation), the less high frequency vibration and the more protection? Can't it still get into resonance and actually exert more acceleration on the OIS mechanism?

      In Australia the vibration dampener is $20

    Quadlock is a beast!! I've dropped my ATAS in every karma sutra position you could imagine and it's been safe. The case is also decent. I left the phone on the roof of my car and it slid off at 75mph into the street. It laid in the middle of the highway for 8 hours and the phone was unscathed when we eventually found it!!! Will never use another mount.

      oh yeah, never used a vibration dampner on any of my bikes and my camera is fine. 🤷‍♂️ one of them is a buell, too

      @@512mbflashdrive Depends on the phone, not all phones have camera stabilizing bits that can be damaged, which is something they should have mentioned in this review.

      Its all subjective, I had a Quad Lock come apart on me dropping my phone on an Highway exit ramp...phone was ok though still in the case...

      @@DJPTEXAS That is very surprising to me. One of my bikes only has one of the two handle bar clamp hex bolts in place so it can be rotated to avoid the sun and it's been working that way for 30k miles haha

    I really like the Mous mount. One case (mag safe) and a separate mount on my motorcycle and Mountain Bike. Despite some pretty extreme riding on the MB it has not come off yet!

    I use the lifeproof life active stuff. I works really well. You can use whatever case you want to and just stick the quick attach mount to the back of the phone case. You can even mount the phone in both landscape and portrait, provided you stick the quick attach mount in the right orientation.

    Side note. Riding 30+ years. My phone lives in my pocket. ANY distraction can kill. Riding = 100% focus. Good luck. Long time sub.

    Good job listening to the comments! I had a Rokform mount that ate two cameras d/t vibration. If I was going to mount the phone again, I’d go with the quadlok. Unlikely though, as I got a good GPS and leave the phone in my pocket.

    I have a couple of different phone mounts that I use. The one on my cruiser has vibration dampening rubber grommets. The Hondo Garage Perfect Squeeze I use on my ADV bike, but between the smoothness of the bike and how the mount is attached, vibrations haven't been an issue.. Honestly, I think some of the biggest issues with vibration damage come from bikes that shake like a paint mixer at idle. Your guess as to which those are. I personally have been most impressed with the $22 mount I use on my mountain bike. It's just a basic spring-loaded squeeze from the side with a rubber strap that holds on at the 4 corners. I ride some pretty rough trails with lots of places grap some air, and the mount holds on like a champ. Even on the occasional trip over the bars or smacking a tree the phone stays put. I have had the arm brake on one after a wreck, but it had spent several years on the bars, but it still never let go of the phone. Those tested are cool looking and slick, but I'd be perfectly happy with just the cheap mount I've used on my bike.

    I've used three out of the four. SP Connect was the only one who ever ejected my phone off road, and still needs a vibration damper. No reason to move off of quad lock at this point, though Peak Design is pretty interesting.

    I went with Quad lock after i broke my rokform case twice. Havent looked back since. Yes its more expensive, but i have wireless fast charging, and vibration dampening. I wish the finger ring was a little more sturdy like the rokform, but it does the job.

    Strange you didn't test the QuadLock vibration dampener. Yes it's an add-on, but that's what makes QuadLock so versatile. Do I need the dampener on a golf cart or kayak, or car dash mount? No. Less expense where not necessary.
