      @@gorillamasterofgaming5525 Which is why the dislikes are an important feature... ever tried watching video tutorials for something and disregarded something right away because everyone who'd seen it before you had decided it was not helpful and disliked it? If you can't see what the viewer consensus is on the video's quality, you're left to determine for yourself through experience whether it's helpful or not.
      When I'm trying to repair my car or fix an error on my computer, I don't want to waste my time on unhelpful tutorials, and trust me there's a lot of useless tutorials out there. It's the video equivalent of using review scores to determine whether a restaurant, hotel, mechanic, etc. is worth going to. I don't think anyone would deny the usefulness of something like that.
      Dislikes might be useless if you're watching videos for entertainment, but there's a lot more on here than just that.

    My personal problem with CZcams ads is the same as with those on TV. I don't really care for the products or scams promoted and just go and do other stuff during the ad break it gives me. What I absolutely hate and will forever be pissed about is the fact that video ads, whereever and whenever they are used, are so much louder than the videos or shows you watch. They should be happy I'm letting them subtly influence my brain while I'm trying to sleep, but I always get woken up and end up pissed at said ad. So pissed, I make a point of looking for other brands if I ever need a product they promote. I have a damn list of brands and products I refuse to use simply because the ads are too loud or too obnoxious to let me sleep through them.

    • @lieutenanteclipse9975
      @lieutenanteclipse9975 Před 7 měsíci +2

      Actually no, my personal problem is the fact that CZcams Ads ISN'T like TV ads.
      It's not just CZcams but CZcams is the worst offender. All the double standards of punishing normal content creators but letting malicious or scam ads reign free, the term "unalive" even having to exist unironically...
      No, but the worst is they listen in through your phone. Everyone deny it, but it's true they are spying on what you're saying.
      One day I was thinking about getting a new watch. Nothing crazy, just a Titus, something that isn't an Apple Watch or a G-Shock. Never looked up a watch on my phone or computer, and after I said it a few times out loud in conversations I'm suddenly getting ads for watches that I normally don't. Okay, that's fine, watches being luxury products, seeing ads here is normal(ish).
      Second contender was way worse. I have a superior at work who does Feng Shui shit on the side. I've never been interested or cared about these as I see them as superstition and never even look up anything pseudo-science ever. Casually mentioning this fact in conversations has once again make CZcams show me ads about seeing destiny and Feng Shui and shit, which isn't an ads from the regular roster for sure.
      That's when I knew they absolutely listen in on you, and my ad blocker on my computer is never gonna be turned off. If I go to a website that forces me to turn it off or it won't show that content? Too bad, I ain't reading that.

    • @felixjohnson3874
      @felixjohnson3874 Před 7 měsíci +23

      Agree for the most part, but for content the supply/demand metric really breaks down. Piracy is just another form of market balance, a less savoury one to be sure, but a balance none-the-less. No-one likes scalpers for instance, but they invest their own money into buying stock which they then sell in an attempt to profit from the market shortage with higher prices which normalizes the market to the true equilibrium price. If they're weren't scalpers at all, the shortage would just be hard; instead of being able to buy some at MSRP, some at 10% higher, some at 20% higher, etc. and then paying what price you are willing to at the ACTUAL equilibrium price, you just couldn't buy them at all. That may sound better since 'eventually' everyone can buy one at MSRP, but that ignores time-cost. Even with scalpers anyone who wants to wait it out can, scalpers just let people who would rather spend more to have it now be able to do so by keeping items stocked in an otherwise dry-supply.
      Ad blocking / piracy though isn't really measurable in terms of supply or demand. Its the same general concept sure, but it's still very different in meaningful ways.
      For instance, why does youtube have a 'monopoly'? Simple, creators would rather bitch and moan then take 10 minutes and setup content mirroring to other platforms. Its free, it takes no work, and it supports alternates, yet they don't do it. The obvious marginal benefit is to their viewers, but the obvious marginal cost is to them so even though the total benefit to them still exceeds the total cost to them, its easier to stay lazy and just get your viewers riled up against youtube. Sure you COULD give your viewers the power to stop relying on yiutube as much, but its easier for YOU to just keep youtube as the devil and pretend to lead the crusade against them. (cough cough rossman cough cough) It has nothing really to do with any meaningful measure of 'supply' or 'demand', it's just general market reactions & normalization which always happens in lieu of EXTREMELY exigent circumstances or government intervention.

The ads are engineered to sound as loud as possible, which makes them really obnoxious. Also on other web sites, we used to see small banners. But now it evolved to active content that jumps at you at an accidental mouse-over. And there's the malicious ad content, out there. I'm protecting myself against all this. Unless the ad business comes so its senses and stops being so obnoxious, I'll keep on doing that. Premium is also not an option. If I'd get premium, I feel like I'm implicitly approving of CZcams's content policies, the state of their GUI, the disappearing dislike numbers and the way they handle controversial topics, speech and even individual words.

      Honestly that applies to almost every website back in the late 90s to mid 00's. Most websites were funded with banner ads, and we were cool with it. Sometimes the product was relevant and we bought it. Other times, it wasn't and we ignored it. But then at some point, not only did the vigilance over what ads were being served but all of a sudden we got the quasi-malware browser hijacks, unrequested new tabs, pop-up windows, bandwidth-hogging AV ads, malicious cookies etc etc. The websites seemed to have no control over what was being included in advertisements, from the content itself to the malicious scripts embedded in seemingly innocent ones.
      So of course we ended up feeling obliged to run adblockers, websites failed due to advertiser withdrawal. Now we are seeing the same thing happen just within apps instead of websites.

Like they put MORE ads in that essentially punished the viewers that weren't using adblockers by over loading them with ads, and it had zero deterence to those who were using already. So more people turned to adblockers to get around the increase of ads. They just keep shooting themselves in the foot rather than making the ad experience more seamless.

    What really gets me about this, and I know this isn't just me because I saw other people saying the same thing, is that if they weren't so incredibly aggressive about this, we might have been more willing to work with them. A simple single, "Hey, we know you don't like ads, but would you maybe consider please turning your adblocker off to help keep our site free?" pop up every session that doesn't actually interfere with our ability to use the site might make us more likely to turn them off. I've seen them on some websites and, as long as the site isn't shady, I'm often happy to oblige just because they asked and didn't demand it. It's like asking a child nicely to put their coat on vs. screaming at them to do it. Sure, there will still be holdouts, but some of them might do as you ask because you asked them nicely.
    Another thing would be ad moderation. Get rid of the scams and the hate speech disguised as ads. Stop with the risque game ads that contain things that would get content creators demonetized on the spot. Don't put 30 second ads on 10 second videos. If the ad is longer than the video, then it doesn't need an ad.
    But instead they went straight to screaming and demanding and throwing a tantrum because they didn't get their way, and that makes even some of the people that were on their side about the ads hesitant to defend them.

People that bother to use adblock are people more likely to choose their purchases through word of mouth and reviews anyways rather than clicking on an ad. By avoiding serving ads to this noninteractive demographic, advertisers are more likely to have their ads served to relevant prospective customers and improves clickthrough rate. It also improves price to conversion ratio (amount of money spent on advertisement to customers gained).

I've considered one in the past, because it clicks the ads in the background before you ever see it, and is EXTREMELY effective at stopping ads this way, and is virtually impossible to detect without any impact to your computer.
      However, it registers as "clicks" and then directly hurts the ad revenua of the comany that supplied the ad, and CZcams keeps the money the company paid them to promote the ad in the first place.

      Very True - I did not really care about Ad's on CZcams for a long time... I only started using Ad-Blockers because on other websites teh ad's were really intrusive!!! They still are...
      I like to follow gaming and stuff.. And I play a lot of Genshin Impact, so I often look up details of new updates or even guides to puzzles and with No Adblocker... You will get to read about 3 lines of text before the screen is FILLED WITH F**KING POPUPS!!!!
      On CZcams, I would simply wait the 5 seconds and skip the adverts... The only place it really annoyed me was Playing Adverts between songs on the playlist I have made of my Favourite Tunes... That messes with my mental health something terrible - music is my antidepressant - Interrupt it - I go CRAZY!
      And it gets worse - Since CZcams started its war on Ad-Block, and they cannot put the blame on Creators here as its very obvious that in many cases it is CZcams themselves embedding the ads... On some videos from BIG COMPANIES... WhatCulture being one.... A 10 Minute Video can be interrupted by about 3 DOUBLE ADVERT BREAKS!
      Now, I know its NOT added by WhatCulture as when they do have Ad's in their videos... They DELIBERATLY time them to come between Entries on their countdown lists... CZcams DOES NOT and will insert them WHEN A CERTAIN TIME HAS PASSED!!! Meaning you could be watching a Video of the 10 Most Underrated Horror Gems and be interested to hear how Jason Voorhees inspired - SHOP LIKE BILLIONAIRE!!!! - HALF WAY THROUGH A SCRIPTED PART, BLOODY ADVERTS!
      But as CZcams pestered - I turned off my Adblock... I Use Opera GX.. and its Turned off... No Ad Block...
      ... Yet for the last week, NO ADVERTS! I have NOT signed up for CZcams Premium, I wont as its too expensive for too little and it does NOT benefit Content Creators... Yet ALL ADVERTS HAVE SUDDENLY STOPPED!!!
      CZcams really has signed their own death warrant! This is a war they will never win!

    From what I understand, there was something of a stalemate between adblockers and ad companies. Ad companies knew that people using adblockers would be less likely to engage with their products anyways, so they didn't attempt to try and circumvent adblockers, while the adblockers themselves didn't attempt to make any advancements since there would be no need to. Google's attempt to force users to watch ads effectively ends that stalemate. On top of that, some people use an adblocker like ad nauseam, which doesn't just block ads, but also "clicks" ads, effectively making it seem like whichever site is hosting the ad is driving traffic to the product, regardless of how true it is.
    Google has already shown that they're willing to go to extreme lengths when a fire isn't lit under them. Remember web environment integrity, which was basically DRM for the internet? They're trying to do it again only on a smaller scale with Android phones in an attempt to kill modified youtube apps. There's something called thermic demand or something similar to that, which basically describes a willingness to put up with changes up to a certain extent, but once that line gets crossed, the change is so drastic and fast that it can destroy a company. Think about unity and their attempt to charge per install. It was one change after all the others that effectively ruined their image, and may very well ruin their future as a company. Google has been getting DOJ threats, and has been firing employees left and right, so part of me thinks that they're attempting to cut the fat off of their business and squeeze every last dollar in an attempt to brace for an impact of some kind; possibly that the government no longer sees keeping them as powerful as they are to be a viable strategy.

    up until the price increase i was more than happy to pay the $10 a month for a service that i genuinely use pretty much daily.

  • @turntapeover5749

    The actual endgame of youtube is to try to brute force premium on the audience because they know it has absolutely zero value outside of removing a ads and adding a mobile phone feature you can already use on browser intead of the app. Subscription wise, Nebula is cheaper to sub to, it has no ads and a ton of content. CZcams is expensive and the main feature is no ads. Their war on ads is just a scare tactic. As long as they see their subs go up they're happy. But so far, it massively backfired because Im sure it made other streaming website subs go up and youtube views go down. And they lost all the good advertiser because of a series of bad decisions and a general laissez-faire attitude because they prefer to let a mathematic formula do their work for them. But the shareholders need more growth and they can't do it with ads because they do less and less money out of it so......force a sub on people.

    That part that really gets to me is that even if you pay for premium, they aren't going to suddenly stop tracking you, your data (which we could probably argue has been taken through dark patterns and uninformed consent) will still be getting farmed and aggregated and used in ways we do not yet understand. I agree that the service has a cost, and that we as users need to pay in some form, however obnoxious advertising, mass data farming and fingerprinting with sensitive data that we have no transparency on, probably being fed into even more unexplainable AI? Somehow I don't think the scales are balanced here.

    People tend to forget that it isn't just about blocking ads, which can and will make youtube unusable for most people because of the frequency and length of the ads. There are a whole host of problems behind youtube, that good adblockers help to circumvent. Let's give a breakdown:
    1. The ads are rolled too frequently.
    If you do not use an adblocker, it will show ads often and sometimes multiple times per video. Even in short videos of less than 15 minutes you can have 5 ads, totalling up to 2,5 minutes of ads for a short video. The amount of ads per watchtime is just ridiculous, including some of them being quite long.
    2. The ads are not targeted at the right audience.
    While not necessarily unethical, having the wrong kinds of ads for the viewer makes them completely useless. Someone would be perfectly fine watching an ad for a game, if they are gamers. Having ads for car insurance would be complete nonsense if you don't own a car. Mistargeted ads will cost the viewer viewtime and it will have no effect or a negative effect on the brand that is being marketed.
    3. The ads are often for inappropriate or downright illegal subjects.
    Having pornography ads, gambling ads, or money scams, clickbait schemes or anything from questionable to the downright illegal and harmful is marketed towards ALL of the youtube audience, including children's content. This isn't simply ethically wrong, it is also illegal, at least in Europe. There are reasonable arguments to be had about showing ads to generate revenue, but there are no reasonable arguments for illegal or inappropriate ads at all.
    4. The CZcams website uses tracking and datacollection on a large scale.
    While not specifically related to ads, most (good) adblocking addons actually block tracking as well. CZcams tracks all of their viewers data, including anything like how long they hover over something, where they stop scrolling, where they point their mouse and anything you can think of. While highly unethical to begin with, this is also against the law in Europe. It goes against all privacy concepts and does not provide value to the user. This is the main reason Google still allows certain adblockers, while trying to stop other ones, as the ones that block tracking (the better ones) are the ones they are really concerned with.
    5. The CZcams website is a content creator's space and operates as a public platform.
    I'm pretty sure Google (or Alphabet) does not agree with this, but at this point in time (and has been for a while) the CZcams platform operates largely as a community platform. It has been started as a 'free' service to upload content and share it with other people, that has slowly grown into the largest content creator platform on the internet, with only Twitch as a small competitor in the streaming market. It has grown this way, initally through technical innovation, but more so due to the extremely large and diverse quality content that the creators on their website offer.
    Technical innovation has been absent from the website for many years, with the only reasonable innovations (like 360 degree video, 4k resolution and such) locked behind a paywall now. With the site operating as more or less a public platform, reliant for 99.9% on the quality and quantity of their content creators, it will probably be better off to become non-profit and as user friendly as possible, reducing the need for ads altogether. If anyone can remember, this site didn't even have ads for the longest of time, which is how it probably should be.
    ----
    To conlude:
    It is not clear to me how anyone would expect someone to not use an adblocker while navigating youtube or on the internet as a whole. If not for convenience, at the very least for safety and privacy concerns. Official institutions, including even the FBI of all things, all recommend the use of an adblocker, precisely for this reason. I'm somewhat okay with the creators themselves doing some in-video stuff, as you can choose to not watch their content if you think it is inappropriate, but to have it forcibly emplaced in and around your favorite content is just wrong and there is no better solution for that than using an adblocker.

      Addendum to your point 2: Untargeted ads *are* unethical towards the advertisers because YT/Google/Alphabet claims it's auctioning targeted ad slots. Auctioning ad slots for users with a steady zero click-through rate for years isn't very ethical towards the advertisers either because those are even less effective than untargeted slots, and a zero CTR is exactly what adblocker users have because they don't see ads so they never click them.

      @JerehmiaBoaz Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@pinobluevogel6458 It doesn't really matter here that YT is responsible for people using adblockers because even if they aren't, they're auctioning ad slots to advertisers while they're aware that those ads won't be viewed because they're serving them to users which they know are using adblockers. Not only is this unethical towards the advertisers, it might be illegal as well and I suspect this legal aspect is a major reason for their anti-adblocker campaign (advertisers might be threatening YT with another adpocalypse). Edit: besides forcing people to view ads they clearly don't want to see, another option would be to not show them ads and limit their service (no high resolutions for instance) or even ban them. The fact that YT is only flirting with this but doesn't ban or lowres every adblocker user means that the time those users spend on the YT site still has value for the company (because it's a goldmine for user profiling)
