*Fun Fact:* The song which featured in The Matrix 2021, was "White Rabbit" as sung by Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane. Who originally wrote the song with her original band, The Great Society, and performed it at a club in San Francisco called, "The Matrix" back in 1966. Which is extremely Meta, due to the character Bug's role in the movie.
The way he runs always reminds me of when you’re trying to run in your sleep and it feels like someones trying to drag you from behind. I always felt like he new it didn’t feel right and by pure will of wanting to run with all his might and be the fastest person combined with over coming his injury jolted his brain out of the matrix.
Such a good analogy, he even was trapped at that moment for a while. I have it like that some times when I try to walk or run in my dreams it feels impossible. I always turn my back towards the opposing force and it helps me push back on it

I believe there’s more to this… if I remember correctly, the next scene shows the runner in the hospital in a wheelchair, practically comatose. Agents are there saying he’s not a threat. Then he stands up and starts walking, and the Agents get scared and move toward him start saying “sit down!” and then the runner takes a couple steps and falls to the ground.

He didn't die until after coming out of his coma. There's a scene missing. But HE was able to escape the Matrix through his own merits. That's probably why he was implied to be the 4th one. Imagine if Neo had been able to WILL himself out of the Matrix on his own. That level of mental fortitude is out of this world.@@sapphirehd1046

Hell yea, i remember watching this years ago and for the longest time couldnt remember where it came from but that running animation was stuck on my mind for so long. I kept confusing it with the halo animated series and thought i was going crazy after rewatching all of that and not seeing this short lollll😅
This plus the robot government one for me were awesome.

by the time of Neo, these same agents were so outdated and useless that they became exiled programs working for the Merovingian. They can't stand against updated agents but can still make redpills a run for their money.

Matrix 4 was clearly inspired by this, except Neo managed to get out again.
This "The One" didn't.
But the fact that he failed but he was about to dominate the Matrix' hold on him, TWICE- The Machine feared his will, AND on top of that he was going to fly.
Jfc, Dan Davis is "THE" Matrix Protagonist, all under 5min. So much content.
He wasn't necessarily a "One", in the first movie there are potentials who aren't the One, but can manipulate the Matrix anyway.

In a way its also the opposite of inspiring. You can try your hardest but some jackass agents will keep you from doing it (and worse, put you in a wheelchair). But temporarily you will be on top.

Classic Madhouse unstable character geometry. Its sometimes bit immersion breaking but amazing tool to heighten emotional impact.
So, Dan Davis was the 4th Predecessor to "The One". Pretty Cool Stuff.
what a cool logical extension of the idea that we live in a simulation. despite how good the matrix is, it does not perfectly simulate the real world nor does it perfectly obscure itself from its subjects. the people we see in the real world who are somehow extraordinary, are actually more attuned to the nature of the simulation in some way.
at 1:17 you can see that the Agents are barely interested in him, they have that "Just another day in the office” expression.
But in 2:22 Dan aroused the curiosity of these soulless machine programs and made them have that “who is this man” expression.
If you ever heard of "gangstalkers", these people remind me of soulless machine programs as well. Sometimes I think we actually do live in the simulation after all like Matrix tried to show us...
If I recall correctly, they were monitoring him the whole time cause his readings were abnormal in the matrix. They first thought it was a simple glitch and nothing would've came out of it
I think Dan would have made a better protagonist than Neo. A big theme of The Matrix is to challenge perceived reality and convention, which is exactly what Dan is doing and continues to do even after his injury. It's common knowledge that many sports are 90 percent mentality so it plays into the "mind over matter" theme as well. I do like characters who achieve their goals through personal attributes and grit rather than a "chosen one" gimmick.

@@durrhurr4230 You've hit the nail perfectly on the head there. I believe Neo was the weakest part of the cultural icon that was the first movie. He felt like he was supposed to serve as a vehicle for the audience to project themselves onto, which is a fundamentally flawed concept anyway. He achieved victory because he is "The One" by design. Not because he earned it.
Dan on the other hand pushed through pain, doubt and threat to get where he was. He got the smallest taste of the reality beyond the one he knows and he wanted to keep going, to keep chasing that freedom. It's no wonder the machines were wary of him, people both inside and outside the Matrix would be inspired to follow his example.
I could easily see World Record being the intro for a whole movie. A group of Zion soldiers approaching Dan after learning of his near escape is much more believable then, as you pointed out, the flimsy nonsense of the original film's introduction.
Agreed, he would've made the story more interesting. Neo broke out of the matrix cause he was chosen, dan forcefully broke through it with sheer will power. Would've made a much more impactful and powerful backstory; "outrunning" the matrix using will is so much more better than a team trying to help neo escape

the potential of that guy was incredible, is pitiful that he don't coming back in the franchise, by the way likely those agents are ''prototypes'' of a early generation, but in the same incarnation of matrix, because have a cyberpunk like clothes in their appearance, not like the government employees as as usually, although they look intimidating even cool, excellent chapter of animatrix.
Back when I was a kid I thought this runner was "the one" morpheous was looking for, the first, who started breaking out of the matrix.
Rewatching it now, and I hear the narrator says this is "one of those few"
I believe this is an earlier version of the matrix. When dan is running his numbers are shown in red which in my opinion is an entirely different code than the one Neo sees which is green. Im guessing this is ths 4th version of the matrix. Even the agents look different than what Neo encounters. Seems like two different programs of the matrix Neo is the 5th version.
I actually like the design they gave the robot. It's unlike anything I've seen before in the matrix franchise... excepting Cybebe sorta.
They did away with all of the voice enhancements in the intro of this one. The lady narrator usually has that robotic, echo voice but speaks normally in this version.

i had that kind of injury. over 18 years ago i was at run competition (100m) and after starting i stompd so hardly and my femur just exploded. now that leg is 2cm shorter... but its magical im quite ok doing furniture nowdays :D

I saw this episode and I thought to myself that things in life always have limits. Like the fact that a human being can't go any faster bcoz of how the code is already set. How we can't reach a lighting speed. We are limited to how far we can travel through outer space. It's kinda like a game where you can't get over the boundaries that is set bcoz that is the rule. There is a limit to how much higher we can jump. There is a limit to how much stronger a human can get. But what if we break through those limits? Would we glitch through reality?
I'd be ecstatic if the animators for this came back to do a segment for Love Death + Robots in this style. Absolutely masterful work.

@@mashonem He's lucky Neo becomes the One at this time and was able to track where exactly Kid's pod is located! No need of red pill tracking when the One can see the underlying codes of the Matrix programming
He said "no" to the subconscious choice to accept it the simulation.
The way I interpret it is that his mind fought an internal battle between the pain signals from his quad muscle injury VS his focus & desire to be the fastest & win gold🥇 unintentionally leading to what we saw.
He was able to override the pain signals (like many athletes have done IRL) but his injury was actually incredibly severe & should of debilitated him as it would of any other athlete. Due to his hyper focus on his goal & being in a mental flow state (aka being "in the zone") his mental process to overcome & override the injury & pain became, though unintentional, actual "mind over matter" (like Neo learns to do on the 1st movie.) This elevated mental process brought his level of consciousness & awareness up to his true actual state & he woke up.

This is so intense and he is just running inside the virtual world and wake himself up just by running so fast he had broken the matrix code. Just imagine Usain Bolt run so fast he glitches out of reality. Insane story also really good animation style.

The Matrix in the world we live in exists in the form of rules. I believe the creators derived the consept from "enlightenment" and applied it to regular people.
Understanding the Martrix in our world requires careful study of most religions, a good understanding of humanity and the self, also a bit of sociology and economy. If you do these, it's a very high possibility that you will arrive at the conclusion that fate and freedom of choice intertwines.
Then, you will probably become a nihilist or a devout religious person, but you won't be satisfied with blind faith, always seeking more knowledge and understanding.
The Matrix cannot be comprehended without a concept of God, but creators stripped it from all the religious background somehow, in order to find more audience i believe.

So the machines are constantly scouting the matrix trying to find the "one" and they found the 4th one here. And because the machines are not yet ready to start the 4th Zion, they put him back into Matrix.
They really should have expanded on this. By making 4 complete series of how each of the "ones" were discovered, how they build Zion, and how they fight the machine before being wiped out.
