Super ATV disc conversion on a Honda Rancher. Installing and testing the performance

- The drum brakes on the Honda Rancher work OK unless you drive in really deep water. And since I enjoy that I needed an upgrade. The SuperATV disc brake conversion and a new main brake cylinder really got the brakes on this ATV working good.

I have installed them on my Honda 350. I put them on the rear. Where the calipers and hoses are protected. Just reroute the hose. I have one on the rear, replaced all my drum brakes. Tied into the front brakes.
Hi, couldn’t get the hoses to reach no matter how I tried. They seem to work good at the front anyway. My rear drum works great still so I won’t mess with it until it fails.
Wow man, I was planning to switch to disks also, but now I'm having second thoughts. Thanks buddy.
It is a bit of work but I think it is worth it. My brakes are still working fine a few years after this modification.
Good job
Thank you!
Great job Nils. I don't know ATVs, but I was surprised to learn that one with that high a speed had drums. The factory brakes were pretty poor. Should have swapped them for the disks on the back of your mother in laws car 🤣. Great upgrade.
Thanks, Honda was really behind on the brake department, most contemporary ATVs had disc brakes. Haha, the i10 might have small brakes but not that small!
Also u can buy Honda rancher 420 knuckles, spindles and calipers off eBay and everything will bolt up like factory I use to buy the super atv kit but then I just started buying the 420 parts cause it’s cheaper and the quality is much better and if your bearings are bad u can get nice bearings in the knuckles u buy
I did read this but shipping to Sweden would make such a “kit” very expensive. If someone would gather all the parts needed and sell as one package it might be more reasonable and as you say better as it is OEM. Did you have to change the main cylinder when you did the conversion?

Thank you for sharing
You are welcome, hopefully it can help someone who wants to do the same thing.
I did not need a new master cylinder for the disc brakes kit on my foreman 450. I did use stainless steel braided brake lines from a trx400ex which gives you a bit of extra length and much better braking performance if your stock lines are old and soft
Ok, maybe the Foreman has a different master cylinder or mine was worn because a new master cylinder was the cure for fixing the lacking performance of the disc brakes.
I might try the brake lines you recommend to get it even better, thanks!
If u ever need brake pads artic cat 500 pads fit those calipers
Thank you! That helps a lot, I hit a mud hole (really nasty thick peanut butter mud) when testing these brakes and the pads took a beating. Buying them from SuperATV looked expensive.
What motorcycle/atv did the new master cylinder come off of? I have an 2002 foreman 450 and the brakes are the same way yours were before you changed the master cylinder out to the new one. Any information would help!
Hi! Unfortunately I don’t know exactly what that master cylinder cabe from. It was from a scraped Chinese scooter but brand and type is unknown. However! I have read that a new non oem master cylinder will have the same effect so try a cheap one from e-bay or Amazon. Have you done a disc brake conversion on yours?
@@NilsKall yes I do have a disc break conversion on mine. I ordered an aftermarket master cylinder was for my foreman. But I’m still having the same issues with the brakes being spongy. I’m just not sure what master cylinder to order to provide more pressure to the brakes
@@camerontalley799 OK, I was going to try a master cylinder from a Honda with original disc brakes like the Rancher 420 but my order was canceled due to some problems with the delivery. I have heard that it should work but I haven’t been able to try unfortunately.
I’d buy the old parts off u but u are so far away ☹️ Great video nils I’ve installed many of these kits and I’ve always trimmed the axle guards
No it’s ts you that is far away from me🤪. Good to hear that it wasn’t just me who put the calipers in front of the axle.
Those stock rims? How close are the calipers to your rim wall. Mine are like a debit card away and I’m just wondering if that’s normal
Hi, they are Rubicon alu rims so “stock” Honda but not for this ATV. They are really close and I had to take some material of the caliper but they don’t rub now. It said in the manual that some material might be removed to fit alu wheels so I would consider it normal that they are close.
@@NilsKall I think mine are steel tho. Facebook market place bike so not sure. I’ll look into removing a little material. Thanks
Not a bad idea to change to disc-breakes on your Honda. You haven't consider buying cfmoto since can-am have so many major problems? (if/when you buying a new atv) 😆
Those disc-breakes are really good, 5,5 meters is a really big difference.
Sorry! I ment to mention you in this video but it was so many parts and editing and voiceover that I forgot about it. I also forgot some testing video that I made fore it, perhaps I will make a short clip later. I wont be buying a new ATV anytime soon and I try to stay away from things made in China. Even if they are good I don’t like supporting that dictatorship. It’s really hard as a lot of stuff (like the iPad I write on) is made there. Your videos makes the temptation hard, the CF are looking good so I wont say that I will never get one😁
@@NilsKall I was actually thinking when I watched your video if you would mention me or not, since you was working and driving with your atv and about the gps overlay with gopro. Just want to mention that what I doesn't like about the gps-files from gopro is that you have to convert them to be working with the overlay software (atleast the one I use).
About cfmoto.. a friend of mine that paid around 120K for his can-am is really amazed how good my 80K cfmoto are. And saving 40K is no brainer for me since my cfmoto take me where I want to go + is easier to handle. And for work, you need a can-am that can switch to work-mode on throttle, to be smooth in tight places etc.
@@ArcticExploring yes it really was my intention to do a shoutout. I will make a separate video on how to use the GPS on the gopro and add stickers, perhaps I can do the shout out there. I only use my iPad for editing and with gopro app + iMovie it is relatively easy to do.
The CF 450 with EPS could be a great ATV for the wife as she needs power steering. Then I could go full retard on the Honda with axle paddels, gear reduction and 30 inch wheels. I would also need snorkel, speaker system and a fat lady sitting behind me. Ohh and some yankee flags and skulls!
@@NilsKall CF 450 do I think would be perfect for you wife since it is the same size as mine (same frame) and more than enough power. Haha yeah you need the full package 😆
@@ArcticExploring I think prices on non essential stuff will drop hard as the petrol and diesel prices are super high right now. Electricity is expensive too, it will be a challenge to heat the house this winter for some people. That might be a good time to buy stuff.
what do those rims measure? thanks.
Hi, they are aluminum rims from a Honda Forman Rubicon, 12x6 and 12x7. They should not fit together with the brake kit but I just filed a bit of material from the caliper and it seems to o work.
I don't think you needed a master from a disc brake bike, I just think your factory master was worn out, probably just replacing it with a factory one would have been fine.
Perhaps but it worked fine with the drum brakes so doubt it was faulty + I have heard that others have had the same issue and solution. I actually ordered a Rancher 420 master cylinder from the US but the order was canceled for some reason so never got the chance to try that.
Watched it to the end. Sorry I can't subscribe twice.
Great to hear and I really appreciate your (single) subscription.
What a nightmare. I'd stick with the stock brakes! Sorry mate.
Nah it wasn’t too bad, easily wort it IMO. Thanks for watching!
