+BeingElle Unfortunately,, its more about power then grace now. Which in my eyes, is a little sad. Plus Nadia weighed a lot less then gymnasts nowadays so she had the ability to be a lot more graceful and elegant. Artistic Gymnastics is turning into men's gymnastics more with every new quadrennium.
+a2l4y7 Womens gymnastics becoming more similar than mens shouldn't be a bad thing. Women should be able to do skills that are more difficult and not be shamed for doing it. Any of the gymnasts now could do routines this simple gracefully but instead they do harder skills which will look more powerful since they require more power. Women's gymnastics is more than just looking pretty, if anything you should be saying men's gymnastics should be more graceful
+MirMir L that's not what they were saying xD but what they were saying was that it looked MORE graceful it doesn't mean women's gymnastics now is looking like men's gymnastics they didn't EVEN mention men's gymnastics haha
That's not the point. They look almost robotic in their movements because of how stiff they are. Even their leaps aren't as flexible in a lot of cases.
OMG...how does she have that much strength to perfectly execute her movements???!!!its practically flawless and it the most beautiful routine I have ever seen!!
Yes! They moved the bars appart to make it more difficult. Personally, I liked them being close together because there were more variations in the skills. :)
They moved them further apart to accommodate the difficulty the gymnasts were starting to execute and not the other way around. Less than 10 years later (1985), the bars were distanced to make room for giants and tkatchevs.
I've been choreographer of amazing Daniela Silivas, Aurelia Dobre, Camelia Voinea, Lavinia Milosovici, Ecaterina Szabo, Eugenia Golea, Lavinia Agache, Cristina Bontas, Gabriela Potorac, Maria Olaru, Popa Celestina, Cristina Grigoras, Simona Pauca & other great gym at Olympic Gym Romanian Team. Also together with Ms. Mirela Dicu I was coach of Lavinia Milosovici & other great gymnasts. Thank you very much for your comments about the Romanians. With friendly thoughts of gratitude, Leo Cosma
i was only 5 years old in the philippines when i saw her in the olympics. when i saw nadia on television i thought it was magic and everything she did was perfect, it was beautiful . even at the age of 5, i was sure that noone else can ever do the gymnastics like she can. i was right
@GlidingArt99 Neither am I! But you have to consider that that routines were extremely difficult back in 1976! Since that, Gymnastics and its apparatus has evolved a lot! All Nadia's routines were ahead of time in the 70's even if you compare with other gymnasts in the 70's, Nadia's routine's were insanely difficult in comparison to other gymnasts.
Nadia Comaneci - Romanian girl that `created ` the first 10 for gymnastics . I see that USA Gymnastics pay respect for her evolution , right . Thank you for that. Romania has best gymnastic , indeed .
+Gyorgos Gyorgos Actually, the Soviets as a whole were the best in history. But Nadia herself is arguably the greatest female gymnast. While Kohei Uchimura is definitely the greatest male gymnast.
Gyorgos Gyorgos My dear, of course I know Nadia is Romanian. I'm her biggest fan. I'm just saying that as a Country, the Soviets were by far the most dominant in women gymnastics for decades. But as an AA gymnast, the great Romanian Nadia Comaneci is the greatest legend and the most famous. I said she was arguable the greatest female gymnast, and I stick by that argument. I also stick to my argument that Uchimura is without question the greatest male gymnast of all time. I know about Scherbo and all his Olympic golds. But not to be blunt, I just watched his SR in 1992 where he won the EF on SR. But believe me, that routine's level of difficulty is so low that he wouldn't even make the EF under today's rules. Because his strength move are non existent. Best regards.
Well... Not anymore. They have some great upcoming juniors tho. Hopefully they grow up to competitive seniors like Larisa, Laura, and Cata. It's so sad what happened to them but it's really been a problem that's just grown bigger because they haven't done anything about it.
Back in the old days, Romania was arguably the only one that could challenge the dominance of Soviet Union. And considering how small the population of Rom vs SU, it was definitely a remarkable feat. It is really sad to see the downfall of Rom gymnastic in recent years. The gym. world just doesnt make any sense without Rom. competing 😢
guys....nowadays things are different so really nastia is a pretty awesome and beautiful gymnast...now dont get me wrong...i love nadia and wished more gymnasts were like tgis...
@gymnasticsloverxoxo what i know is that during her warm up her hands started bleeding, bela told her to keep spitting on it and to gently rub her hands, so she kept spitting and rubbing till it was time to perfrom..... that was written in a report back in 1976.... imagine performing like that with a bleeding hand !!!!
Wow. She did a gorgeous routine...with her bare hands. Her routine is fun, free, graceful. Now, it's stiff and restrained. Then and now are completely different. Gymnastics truly isn't the same anymore.
I love her personality. None of the hysterics of today's gymnasts.. meditating before they perform.. looking like they saw a ghost.. or acting as if the balance of the world hangs on them proving themself in a meet. She was competitive. She just did it and made it look easy.
Nadia had a lot to cry about, she suffered bulimia, was later taken from her trainers, was abused by the Ceaușescu family (mainly Nicolae's son, Nicu), had a abortion during this era, attempted suicide, gained weight and had to go on a strict diet between 1978-1979, she was removed from the '77 European championship because Ceaușescu didn't like the Romanian team's results (she could have won more medals) and she and her family were constantly watched.
@bizou154 Back then Nadia's tumbling was rare. Most were still doing single back flips and it was on hard floors with just some carpeting or a mat no thicker than a wresler's. It was not springloaded as today. It's great if you can 'almost do' the same thing-but it would NOT have been the same thing on such archaic equipment.
even by today standards she would be the best.. some sports just have a golden era for turning its probably the 70s it's the same for boxing wich also had its golden era in the 70s
@kinteali the bars were closer together and the elements and tricks/stunts were much simpler. her dismount which was a back somersault with a half twist would have been a dismount for someone level 6-8 today compared to it being an elite dismount in the 70's.
Hey, could someone help me out? Why does Nadia often landle in a strattle position but the gymnists at the 2012 olympics all seem to have to land feet together. Has scoring or rules changed?
Nah....doesn't hurt....I used to do this. The freakin' "Eagle Catch" was the bane of my existence! You had what was called a "bar setting" that was the optimal distance to beat the bar like that, without pain. You want to hit just below your bone, right where you bend at the waist. This went out of style as female gymnasts started performing giant swings (like the men were doing on high bar). They needed more clearance, so beating the bar went out of style as the moves changed and became somewhat more difficult, required the entire body to clear the space between the bars. I'd like to see some evidence that this went out of style due to fertility concerns.....that seems like a stretch.
Is it me or did gymnasts seem a lot more graceful and fluid in their movements back then?
+BeingElle Unfortunately,, its more about power then grace now. Which in my eyes, is a little sad. Plus Nadia weighed a lot less then gymnasts nowadays so she had the ability to be a lot more graceful and elegant. Artistic Gymnastics is turning into men's gymnastics more with every new quadrennium.
It's not just you

I love when the commentator talks about her not crying since she was 6 years old. I cry when I wake up and realize I have to get up and go to work. 😂
😂
She was intimidated into not doing so more likely. That regime in Romania at the time was very brutalistic and regimented.
I thought for sure her hands had slipped a few times because her movements were so fluid. It was incredible.
The fact that she is doing that without even wearing grips is just amazing
OMG...how does she have that much strength to perfectly execute her movements???!!!its practically flawless and it the most beautiful routine I have ever seen!!
Yes! They moved the bars appart to make it more difficult. Personally, I liked them being close together because there were more variations in the skills. :)
Imo some of the stuff they did then took more creativity and skill than just swinging in circles over and over .
They moved them further apart to accommodate the difficulty the gymnasts were starting to execute and not the other way around. Less than 10 years later (1985), the bars were distanced to make room for giants and tkatchevs.

i was only 5 years old in the philippines when i saw her in the olympics. when i saw nadia on television i thought it was magic and everything she did was perfect, it was beautiful . even at the age of 5, i was sure that noone else can ever do the gymnastics like she can. i was right

Lovely. :)
zseniális!!!
@albiehl No-Nadia didn't wear them at the 1976 Olympics either but she started to after those Games.
Nadia es la mejor (Nadia is the best) =D
Cathy Rigby mentioned that Bela said that Nadia never cried since she was 6. Nadia had nothing to cry about. Her routines were amazing. Lol
Nadia had a lot to cry about, she suffered bulimia, was later taken from her trainers, was abused by the Ceaușescu family (mainly Nicolae's son, Nicu), had a abortion during this era, attempted suicide, gained weight and had to go on a strict diet between 1978-1979, she was removed from the '77 European championship because Ceaușescu didn't like the Romanian team's results (she could have won more medals) and she and her family were constantly watched.
dude u can see her muscles!! shes a legend yo!
YES!! Someone remembers that Olga Korbut existed!! Everyone forgets about her!
But Nadia is better
not on UB@@eyshilaclausem679
@@amandine2239 of course not
I think she just makes it look easy. And she isn't even using chalk, her hands are bloody red!!

Ojej!!!!
This gir is unbelievable.....
Wow
even by today standards she would be the best.. some sports just have a golden era for turning its probably the 70s it's the same for boxing wich also had its golden era in the 70s
Question: how come no one does that spin transition thing she did at :20-:23 anymore? that was so cool!!
basically 80% of what they did in the 80s is illegal now lol
why is illegal?
+Daniel Armando Duarte the bars are spaced further apart these days, fairly certain
+Daniel Armando Duarte I believe it's because the bars being that close together could cause injury. I may be wrong?
+Daniel Armando Duarte looks damaging to be honest and the uneven bars are further apart today so the move would not work anyway.
where did they find the deduction??
wow bars were so much different back then.
@kinteali
the bars were closer together and the elements and tricks/stunts were much simpler. her dismount which was a back somersault with a half twist would have been a dismount for someone level 6-8 today compared to it being an elite dismount in the 70's.
Hey, could someone help me out? Why does Nadia often landle in a strattle position but the gymnists at the 2012 olympics all seem to have to land feet together. Has scoring or rules changed?
Not sure, might have to do with the stiffer mats back then
its crazy how much nicer commentators back then were in comparison to today.
@sweethollywood123 dont be toooooo sure no one knows what will happen in the future but i gotta admitt she is awesome
Hey, why don't men do the uneven bars? *Watches **0:26* That's why... o_o
1Meepman 😂😂😂
Thats the "belly whip" , that does not directly hit on the genitals actually.
That move was actually banned for women even before they changed the design of the uneven bars. Doctors felt it might ruin their fertility.
Looooool
Did the high bar and the low bar use to be closer back then? Cause otherwise I don't see how anyone would be capable of doing this 0:15
O.O
im still trying to figure out how exactly thats possible
This girl is a gymnastic goddess.
Slamming her hips against the bar looks really painful
Nah, the bars are pretty bendy - it's not bad. Balance beams, though. *wince* Now those suckers hurt.
+Sarah the Uneven Bars were made from wood back in the 70s so it probably did hurt.
It was an essential part if the routine then, including wrapping your lower body around the lower bar. So they were used to it.
That move was eventually banned because doctors felt it would ruin their fertility
Nah....doesn't hurt....I used to do this. The freakin' "Eagle Catch" was the bane of my existence! You had what was called a "bar setting" that was the optimal distance to beat the bar like that, without pain. You want to hit just below your bone, right where you bend at the waist. how many gold meddles did she get?
The only thing they add to Nadia's routine for the Olympics was a second handstand right before the dismount.
