Shame that Jake Solomon had to leave Firaxis. Hopefully future XCOM installments won't suffer from his absence.

Man, some of these ideas are amazing. I'd love to have played the first iteration. Also, constant combat is sweet.

    Love Mr. Solomon's refreshing humility.

That pitch video was amazing. Modern XCom needed more tension and horror like that.

So funny that he shits all over his idea for using likes to draw sights when moving but I find it’s a welcome feature in Gears Tactics. Those lines are very subtle however and maybe standard resolutions being higher just helps with that.

BAM, I so wished to have THAT game! Yes, Xcom as it is now is pretty cool, but the grim and horrifying atmosphere of the original somehow got lost. Fingers crossed for Gollops Phoenix Point! :D

yeah for reason most american art directors these days seem try too hard to make everything cool or marketable, and what not. but it always lead's to the final product being boring, and a downgrade from the early designs since the artist's do not really have any chance to be creative in their work

Like with almost all modern mainstream titles/series, the prime focus on range and profit also stripped X-Com of all its initial ingenuity, positive complexity, authentic atmosphere and artistic relevance.

What an ignorant and pretentious comment. The entire concept and pitch of the original X-Com was "Laser Squad 2," which was just a squad-level tactical turn-based game in set in space. A "prime focus on range and profit" made it into the multi-layered strategy game it became, because the publisher, Microprose, wanted a game that hit the same target market as Civilization. It was even their idea to make the game about UFOs and an alien invasion, not the developers'.
