The Dame Edna Experience from 1991. Guests in this episode: Cher, Mel Gibson, Bea Arthur, Jack Palance and Larry Hagman. Ofcourse also featuring: Madge.
R.I.P. Barry Humphries. I was so heartbroken when I heard the news today. I've been a big fan for over three decades, and he will be sorely missed. This was my favourite episode in all the series, and you can tell Cher had such a wonderful & fun time! Thank you for leaving us a wonderful & precious legacy, Mr. Humphries. Goodbye, Possums. 😞
Australia lost its unofficial Queen with Edna, still can’t believe if Barry walked down the street as “Edna”, no matter who you were and where you came from, people would bow or drop a knee a little and refer to Edna as, Dame Edna or, “your grace”. Had such respect in his homeland Barry did.
I completely agree. You can tell they were just enjoying themselves and having a blast. Cher has such an infectious laughter. I laugh every time she does. I used to have this episode on VHS in the '90s but it sadly got torn and ripped from overplay. So glad I found this on CZcams.
Dame Edna's facial expressions are amazing - so convincing, that Dame Edna is a real character in her own right. Dear Barry Humphreys. You have been a wonderful part of an era which can never be replaced. The world is changing fast now and I believe that you have been released to a happy 'place' where you will fit in perfectly. Thank you for bringing so much happiness to us 🤍 You will be remembered with much affection.
I saw Edna's last "Last Tour" about 6 years ago in Seattle, 1½ hours on a relatively empty stage with one intermission. I'm a huge comedy fan and just turned 80 but I have never laughed so much for so long in my life. Humpfries died yesterday at 89 so he must have been well into his 80s when I saw him, still bouncing around the stage in high heels, doing crowd work and all. Lex Patterson is another hilarious character he did, but Dame Edna he crafted over 50 years in performance and I have never witnessed anything funnier. My girlfriend worked backstage at the shows and brought home a few leftover gladiolas every night. RIP Barry Humphries.
TBH, I don't think Hannah Gadsby got him either - and she's Australian. Rewatching K D Lang's interview with Dame Edna, I can't understand why. She even got it.😂
Cher, is a woman l have totally admired for all of my life. Her grace and beauty, her little cackle at Dame Edna's wit is heartwarming. Dame Edna, a prized Aussie gem possums. So proud of her. Sleep tite.❤ 🐨😘🦘
I don’t think at the time we realised how fab Dame Edna was..Well done Barry Humphries…we miss your shows so much…You are what we need today more than ever.
@@zapkvr where did you see it though? Because this show was certainly not Dame Ednas best work. Her best work was in tv and films Australia and the UK. She was allowed to really let loose in those countries. USA are offended so easily so she had to tame it down here.
I certainly hope Barry knew what a treasure he was. I don’t even think Carson could have had Cher, Hagman, Mel Gibson & Bea Arthur show up at the same time and be involved as they all were. Simply amazing. RIP Barry.
I only heard of Barry Humphries because of his passing. 10 minutes in and I haven’t stopped laughing. RIP, Mr. Humphries- the world has indeed lost a legend. Now he’s putting a smile on every face in heaven.
Like so many, I'm rewatching Dame Edna after learning Barry died. I know it's Humphries, but I still think of her as a woman and a real person. So perfect is his creation.
There is no one who can improvise about anything, at any moment, and make it seem like a joke by a professional joke writer. So much of her shows is loosely scripted and very much improvised. I've seen Dame Edna live about 5 times, and I almost want to wet my pants from laughing so hard each time.
Doc Severinson, Johnny Carson’s band leader, is too cute! I love Dame Edna, she(lol) is so hilarious, “I wouldn’t want guests self flagellating in my living room”, hahaha 🤣 I love Cher…
Dame Edna bringing up Cher’s tattoos saying “ When did you start embellishing your epidermis “ ? Hahahahahahahahahahaha Cher is such a good sport here laughing heartily really enjoying Dame Edna’s humour . I love Cher she speaks so sweetly to her . So funny what Dame Edna says here Lol .
22:15 Chers response to Edna's "was I happy or sad" was absolutely hilarious! The April fools story she told, had even Dame Edna burst out laughing! Amazing! Cher is fantastic and her and Edna together are delightful. Love them both so much. 😂❤
One brilliant actor! It was obvious that Cher respected Dame Edna. It’s one of the few shows that Cher didn’t look like she hated being there. There will NEVER be another Barry Humphries. I am heartbroken.
I so loved this! I remember watching the show very many years ago on TV. Got to see Dame Edna live in Cleveland from the front row! What a wonderful experience that was!
I bet the Americans couldn't believe what they were watching when Edna was doing her show he is a true star and certainly brings out the best or worst in her shows truly an icon
I didn't mean you didn't like him what i mean is the Americans didn't know how to take him at first as it's not everyone's cup of tea he was brilliant and well respected and he wouldn't have been so popular had he been just starting out in this era
Dame Edna really is one of the Great comediennes that lay the path for everyone funny nowadays! She took risks and her humour OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! Thank you for such fond memories and laughs!!! x x
berghorst Same here I was 16 when I saw this and grew up watching her on UK TV. Whenever she was on someone else's show it quickly turned into her show as she just dominated it instantly and is just hilarious. The biting & intelligent humour is second to none for me. Cher and Bea Arthur with Dame Edna...What's not to love 🤣👍
Dame Edna became the model for about 90% of professional stsnd up drag queens. Of imitated, never duplicated This from a very heterosexual man, with wife and kids. A comedian like no other.
How can this guy recover from whatever direction his jokes go? I mean, Dame Edna is his best character by far. But it's Barry Humpries that does the twisting and turning to a sometimes mind boggling degree.
My mum & late Dad, went on stage with Dame EE. When she appeared in Bristol, some years ago. A wonderful fun evening & a v Happy memory with my wonderful Dad.❤🌻
Watching every Dame Edna and Sir Les vid on YT has helped us get through the 5 month 2021 COVID lockdown in Sydney. Wish there was lots more of Edna and Les available 👏🏼 BTW, Cher is a great sport and has a career length that’s starting to approach Edna’s …

Thank you for your brilliant repertoire! You’re a joy to watch and you bring a bright light to my day. Miss you and pray you’re well. (A native Californian).
There was such a rapport between Cher and Barry. She didn't do the Hollywood star thing. I'm sure she enjoyed his quick wit and dry sense of humour. Likewise, in the late 70's, on her own tv show, she displayed similar characteristics.

She's was just the best ever ,from us in Queensland
Cher totally gets it and not everyone does. So she's a great guest. She has a terrific sense of humor herself, so this is very funny.

There’s one moment where Edna gets the Cher stare
Dame Edna is the hilarious one and Cher is funny because she “ gets it “ ? Really ?

Cher is such a good stick, as is Mel Gibson, RIP Barrie Humphries, such an Icon and comedic Aussie genius

Cher is so attractive in this video. Her whole look suits her and she comes across very well: she's a perfect foil for the Dame.
My mom and I used to love watching this show it was our Saturday night ritual she felt sorry for poor Madge
These days I almost feel like Dame Edna was ahead of her time.

I actually remember watching this when it first came on 20 years ago and haven't seen it since.
Cher was a great good sport! She totally went with it, as spontaneous as she was attractive, and she clearly had a blast.
Our fabulous Cher - so gracious 😇
Well Barry Humphries arranged the whole premise, that's why Cher seemed like she was reciting lines from a script
