Som street drinkers do it and say " this is for those gone, and for those to come".
As a child of Haitian descent, I can recall my Elders, particularly my grandmother, not just pouring libation, but actually sprinkling "fresh water" at the front entrance doorway and around the backyard. When I questioned her about it, she replied with the following in Haitian-Creole: "se pou ou toujou salye la nature avek zancet yo." Always salute Mother Nature and the Ancestors.... Ayibobo!

Love grandparents🏵
Ayibobo !
Indeeeeed
My mother do this all the time.
I definitely grew up pouring out liquor for "the homies" and turning down the radio when driving past a cemetery so we won't wake the dead.
Same I remember always begging bio mom to turn radio down late at night when we went on certain road leading to wisdom woods circle in Peachtree city ga . Turns out according to the show the hunting of.. (Margaret Cho episode) she rented I house back in the trees . well the road was part of trail of tears. I felt she was being rude and tried to turn it down or I'd get uncomfortable till off the road. I have Andean in me turns out .so maybe I was connected in that since idk
And still pour em
@@midnightlotus7047 I remember do the same growing up, but now understand the meaning.
There's a reason why alcohol is traditionally called "spirits"
Yup
Ayeee so true
I'm getting into ancestral worship because I want to gain a better relationship with my higher evolved ancestors.
In Jamaica, when something you're eating or drinking spills, older folk used to say it's because the spirits wanted some. I wonder if I should pour a libation when that happens to me now. 🤔
I've heard that in Mexico too
I use water because 1) my family has been deeply afflicted by addiction and alcoholism and 2) Im Part Native American and liquor has caused lots of harm
This gives a whole new meaning to the traditional practice of poring the first shot onto the ground and saying the phrase, "To my homies." I always found that common practice among gang members very spiritually connected and respectful, while amusing too. Though I am a child of Elegua and we tend to find humor in almost everything.
I also recall having to lower my head when I go to cemeteries as a child. I always felt crowded at them. Family members always found it odd how I tend to avoid cemeteries whenever possible now as an adult, because as a sensitive, spirit always love to latch onto me and wanting to communicate with me. It gets very overwhelming for me at cemeteries. My mother is the only one who understands why. She told me that I had a gift with connecting and talking with spirits or forces that others do not see, as well as always being a child that is so connected with forces that others overlook. I'm relearning how to control those sensations as I am entering a new path at life, going to be an embalmer and I will have to face those forces head on. I use to fear them, but as I am reconnecting to how they can help me, I'm less fearful. Life is such an interesting complex thing that it transcends into death as well. I think that is why I love the African traditions and practices, they acknowledge everything around us and fear nothing.
And most labels on the bottles of alcohol says SPIRITS and pouring of libations was also in Cooley High
I grew up with this in my country Trinidad and Tobago
Ase couva California
Never knew that’s what it was called but seen a lot of it done in urban movies and just from living in the hood.
Some for the dead homies
lmgbebe Facts!!!
Libations and prayer have been part of my life even before I started looking into African practices. I love this.
💯
I dispose of liquid offerings that I place on my altar outside around my trees. To me it feels more respectful than just pouring it down the drain 🤷🏾♀️. Thank you for the education, I always look forward to your teachings💛💜💙
Angie MustStayWokePeriodt! I love yo name 😭😭🤣🤣❤️

You’re a complete legend for so many of us…
This came at the PERFECT time! My home island, St. Croix celebrates the anniversary of a rebellion that took place on our island tomorrow so I’ll be sure to offer a libation to the leaders
How I miss St. Croix 🥰 Miss Point Udall at night looking at the stars. You can definitely see some thangs 😉in the sky at night there. ❤️🙏🏾
iammystrength 🤗🤗🤗
My mom is from St. Croix and didn't teach me much about the culture..
@@InTuItAura that’s too bad. I hope you’re able to learn
I sprinkle libations daily at my ancestor altar.
Yep,we do it in Jamaica. But we use white rum .Even when my grandma cook rice, she would first spread a few grains around the pot on the stove. Funny enough, that one pound of rice would swell over the pot as if it was two pounds she started with. Interesting stuff.

Happy to know Jamaicans are embracing their good ancestors
@@sunofshangoihate45thihated85 oh yes, particularly the older folks( and the few younger ones like myself),majority of the younger generation don't.
🇯🇲🇯🇲🪴 growing up i remember every evening coming home 🏡 from school. my grandfather would send me to get his rum and tobacco and pipe 😅 and he would sit under the Mango 🌲 in the backyard smoking and talking to himself at least that's what I 🤔 i was young then not knowing he was connecting with his ancestors 😮😂 thanks Emily looking at ur videos I've learned a lot and he would've only want me to go get his rum and tobacco and make his coffee ☕ so some time I says why me.😢😮😮now I know so i must honor him cuz he raised me fr a baby o dear i love u Pappa❤️🌹🙏🙏🇯🇲🤣🤣🤣
Thank You so Much
IAM in ST LOUIS MISSOURI bear the Nile of the West ( Mississippi River).
I don’t practice any particular way of honoring our ancestors, though I Love them very much . I’m so thankful for them .
I love all the positive ways to include our loved ones who have passed in our lives. I was told not to practice different faiths without dedicating my time and energy in learning how to honor these different dieties because I could bring negative to myself because it is disrespectful to ask for help from many God's/Dieties without knowing them. Therefore, I am sticking to learning to love myself and only pray to God of Love. Later, I will choose a specific faith to learn more.
My coworker is from St Lucia we sat on the bench outside and had lunch. Before drinking her coconut water she poured a little bit out in front of where we were sitting and behind the bench. I knew what she was doing. We happened to also be sitting not to from a cemetery 💕🙏🏾. Great video
When we go to the sea to give our offerings to Yemoja..and the river to Oshun....we also pour wine and milk and perfumes etc...
I hear that liquor represents the fire element and the stronger the liquor is, the better for your ancestors. Ppl can use the corresponding liquors depending on their culture, but a liquor that you can light on fire like grain alcohol is best.
Lol Doughboy didnt say that but he did "pour out a little liquor" for Ricky as he walked away for Tre at the end.
Thanks for clarifying! ☀️
Love from Australia ❤️ Give the ancestors what they enjoyed in life
You have noooooo idea how much of a blessing this channel is!!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!!! 💞
I am fron SEA country & we also have a pretty old libation-like tradition (probably since animism period), by pouring scented water (mix with aromatic local flowers) or simply just those aromatic flowers on the loved one grave.
Thank you
I absolutely love your videos/lessons. I have poured libations for deceased friends and family. I also have done sprinkles in the home but out of a clear glass and to remove negative energy left by angry people that were there.
I am learning so much from you! I absolutely love your videos! My mom used to sprinkle our home with water. I do it too, but I didn’t fully understand what I was doing. I used to just pray over water and sprinkle it through the house to uplift the spirit of the home. Thank you for expanding my knowledge on this💖✨

Hi Elemi, I always look forward to your videos and I always learn so much...many blessings 🙏 👍🙋♀️👏👏👏
Quite a lot of Lithuanian pagan folk do it, too. I remember it as a teenager even, we used to pour drinks for the dead, beer for the gods.
