      Damn...the other day I just put a tumbler of water somewhere..."I was trying to see if my ancestors and guides would drink it"...to show me that they're there...is this a message that that's where they want me to set up their altar?I just started thinking about setting up an altar the other day...
      I've been communicating with them... talking to them...
      My grandma passed but she's always with me...I think...she passed defending me...I've never had an altar...or thought about it till recently...

      I doubt you'll see this, as there are 700 questions here, but I made one for my mom who passed of a heart condition earlier this year. I made an altar a few months later, but I don't ask for anything. Only use it to love and venerate her. Is that in good order?

      (following up)The cup was never full when I checked... they've been drinking from it...I don't see them but they've shown me that they're here...at first I doubted and even called myself crazy for even having the idea...but apparently I'm not crazy...I'm just getting subliminal messages from the universe and spirit guides...❤️

    I've had one for over 25 yrs. I don't think you can make a mistake in making your ancestral altar. Let the spirit lead you, you'll feel what's right and wrong for it. I do the same thing my grandma did. Everyone has there own way. She lit a candle and that's it. I light a candle and a incense. I ask them to intercede for me since they are closer to God. I talk to them all the time just like when they were here. My great grandma called me a natural I didn't know what they meant then. My mother has helped me since she died. She died from a drug overdose and yes she's on my altar and my biggest comfort. They lead me to my healing I'm listed as terminal and died over 20 time's from a bacterial infection. I've had over 39 surgeries and every one they said I would never walk again. But here I am ans here I stand. But one thing my grandma didn't do was put out food for them we had a cousin who did and my grandma thought that was funny since the dead don't need our food because they don't eat in the spirit world they live off our memories even if we didn't know some of our ancestors personally. But as I say let your spirit tell you what's right for you

      My grandma has an alter for her mom, she lights a candle and will cut flowers from her garden as an offering. When she eats she asks her mom to eat with her/thru her. If she forgets to invite her mom to eat she’ll almost choke on her food in a non harmful way.

      2 separate tables. This part really help me when I first started. It cleared up a lot of the work I was doing. Have 1 ALL WHITE space for veneration, pictures, offerings. Then have another space separate where you go to ask for specific things like : protection, money, etc. On the Petition altar you still need water, offerings for the petition and your choice of Candle 🕯 but this space is for work, not for rest. You’ll notice the difference it makes separating those energies.

    I personally use a windowsill where I attached some string from one side to the other, then used mini pins to put up pics of my ancestors in this window. I don’t have much room and this felt right to me. I leave offerings to them as the mood strikes (usually 3-4 x per week) and I know it helps me stay connected. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to give them OUR best. One person may be wealthy and can give fancy things. Another person might be poor and can only share the little they have. The spirits know what we can offer and don’t judge if we can’t afford a giant spread. That’s what’s so amazing about them :)

      Hey, I obviously don't know you, but I think it helps to think of your ancestors as a feeling. It doesn't have to be so and so uncle or aunt. It's the people who came before you, you don't really need to know their face or their names. But many parts of who you are have come down the line from them. Make a an alter with things that seems familiar..or even just one person in your life no longer here from your family. I think I just want to say don't be so hard on yourself, even if you don't know where you come from you, look at where you are now and keep believing in yourself and the help your ancestors gave you to keep going.

I was guided to make another altar recently and I believe they led me to this because I kept it simple this time but I put me and my pop pop picture up today and some 2020 intentions and guess what I got led to this video! Here is a tip.
      Vinegar for water...
      Ashes from incense in the water ..
      Food= Learning from them.
      Prayers are thier food.
      Flowers and herbs is this new thing called "spirit money".
      Try that in a small corner... and see the diffrence

    There were some good points made here, however it is always best to get information from your Babalawo/Priest on how to engage with your alter. It is always good to keep in mind that when one is doing a lot of spiritual work the alters will always reflect that as well.
