I've been a professional drummer for 46 years. I've played ALL styles of music both live and in the studio. But I have to say that in all of my musical life, in all the bands I've been blessed to play and collaborate with, this "Follow the Light" track has just completely blown me away. The amazing "pocket" that these folks were able to establish is like NOTHING I've ever experienced. Especially given the fact that I understand that they didn't even record this video in the same studio with each other. Dirty Loops was home in Sweden, and Cory Wong (who plays with such funky precision) was in Minneapolis with his horns. They are all completely outstanding musicians, but that BASS!! THE BASS!! I hope he was standing near a bucket because the FUNK was just dripping off his hands. The triplet-slaps at the end of some of his phrases slayed me. His solo was on another planet. Him and the drummer (I've seen his solo in "Work Shit Out" and he's completely GOLDEN) are joined at the hip! I've watched this video about 11 times, and it drains me each time. MASTERPIECE!

Henrik Linder has a great explanation for his slapping triplet technique on the Scott's Bass Lessons YT channel. Two hammer ons and then a slap which is usually followed by the same with a pop to create a sextuplet. Pretty similar to Victor Wooten technique and Tosin Abasi selective picking.

  • @mghJD

Check out Turbo. The baritone sax is off the charts.
Now the fun: this was recorded in Minnesota and Sweden. Cory and Aron coordinated the camera placements the similar backgrounds; besides being the main writers.
Go back through that horn section (all players) many played with Prince. Grace Kelly is a wind instrument wormhole in and of herself. The horns play with Cory, Vulfpeck , Fearless Flyers etc.
Just watch Cory’s podcast with Henrik, Cory explains the whole process, the backing tracks they created, and coordination with Aron.

    A couple of things:
    1. Cory Wong’s horn section used to play with Prince… they were called “The Horn Heads”… THAT’s why they’re so tight.
    2. At the end of the credits, there is a little notation saying “Quincy Jones, Management”… that should tell you everything you need to know about the production.
    3. If you think this is good… wait until you experience the other tracks on this album… I personally recommend “Thriller”… when you watch that one, be on the lookout for a double-belled Euphonium… quite possibly the only inclusion of said in a pop tune EVER.

Good post and reaction Mr P. Always watch the end credits as there is often a bit of funny stuff in there.

Henrik Linder...man is a monster on bass. Playing a 6 string bass is already hard enough, but to play it that well? Outstanding

The Baritone Sax (and other reeds) player is Grace Kelly who has her own channel. She's pretty excellent.

This song blew my mind and just stumbled across your channel, I'm also a teacher; would love to build the courage to do this kind of thing myself. Thanks for the awesome video and inspiration for my 29 year old self!
