- Chris Berman and Joe Morgan host the The 1998 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby from the All-Star game location at Coors Field in Denver, CO. The following players participated and hit the following number of home runs:
Ken Griffey Jr. (Winner), Seattle Mariners, 19
Jim Thome (Runner-Up), Cleveland Indians, 17
Vinny Castillo, Colorado Rockies, 12
Rafael Palmeiro, Baltimore Orioles, 10
Moises Alou, Houston Astros, 7

Javy Lopez, Atlanta Braves, 5
Mark McGwire, St Louis Cardinals, 4
Damion Easley, Detroit Tigers, 2
Chipper Jones, Atlanta Braves, 1

Man watching all these players and names bringing back so many memories. What an amazing time for baseball. Regardless of the asterisks this was was incredible time as a fan to watch.

ahhh man those were the days.. playing in the little leagues during the summer, following baseball like crazy , playing ken griffey jr baseball on the N64 with my teamates. Its the first ever homerun derby that i ever watched. Griffey jr was always my favorite, i was so happy when he won.
The late 90's were the best in so many ways
Michael Buffer had me cracking up the way he said Rafael Palmero's name. You can tell he was enjoying doing intros for ball players of different ethnicities, as opposed to Ric Flair for the hundredth time.

Seeing all these guys again makes me sad. It'll probably never be this fun again. The "steroid era" was the best era.
I dunno, we have a bunch of players these days that can hit as many home runs as these guys, and have 500 foot power. Pete Alonso, Vlad Guererro Jr, Mike Trout, Nomar Mazara blasted one 500 feet in Texas, Joey Gallo hits moon shots too, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton can hit em as far as anyone. Keep an eye on Aristides Aquino on the Reds, he has 19 home runs in 200 AB and a ton of power.
@@Veganerd_ It was more of an atmospheric thing than anything. It had less to do with the ability to hit home runs but more to do with the hype behind it. These guys were legendary.

This was the night before I found my favorite baseball player at 10 years old. I Saw The sandlot for the first time in 1996 / 1997 and I decided that my favorite team would be the dodgers despite living in Florida. I somehow found that the All-Star game was on TV in 1998 and I remember it was the summer after fourth grade. I remember asking thecounselors at my summer camp if there was a player on the dodgers named Rodriguez like in The sandlot. So I didn't see the home run Derbybut I did see the All-Star game the very next night and I saw Gary Sheffield for the very first time. That's when I decided that he was going to be my favorite player. The first derby I saw was the following year. I will never love baseball as much as I did when I was a kid watching Gary Sheffield. He officially retired on my birthday and I still love baseball and I'll still watch it but I don't care anywhere near as much about it as I did when he was playing. I would give anything to have that feeling back

I had Griffey everything hanging in my bedroom in 1998. I remember watching this and thinking about how grumpy Jr. was. Never knew how reluctant he was to do it until years later. He never did have any work ethic or discipline and relied entirely on talent, so it doesn't surprise me he was annoyed that he felt obligated to put effort into something he didn't want to then won with shear talent...

The first derby I ever watched was the next year in Boston. But this year's All-Star game (98) was the first time I saw Gary Sheffield. I had just started watching baseball anddespite living in Florida at the time I decided I was going to be a dodgers fan because of The sandlot. So I saw sheffield and decided he was going to be my favorite player. Lots of great memories after that

52:07 is the longest ball I've ever seen hit in Coors field. That includes tons of games, lots of batting practice, and now from seeing two HR derbys there live. The face of the rockpile is about 500 even from homeplate and his ball crossed it at probably 35/40 feet above the field. Probably 520 - 540 depending on the descent angle.
I think this is the first one I've seen where you have the player introductions, nice (i'm watching them in order, of course). We don't see Chipper Jones or Moises Alou hit, same thing with my copy......

@@jasonmason066 can only imagine it was because he and his dad were in the league at the same time at the start of Junior's career. Berman, being a little odd, probably called them Senior Griffey and Junior Griffey. or Griffey and Junior Griffey. Junior also just went by Junior a lot of the time, so it could be similar to say Mookie Betts being called as Mookie as opposed to Markus.
another possibility is that with Berman's manner of speaking or his announcing style that Junior Griffey might be easier/more fluid to say than Ken Griffey, Jr. or Griffey, Jr.

Back when the actual all stars would take part in the homerun derby.....year after year. Griffey gives his bat to the pitcher, class act. I regret not having been a hardcore fan of his, was a Bonds fan instead pre steroids.
Griffey was absolutely amazing to watch. Bonds was fun but played the bad guy role so well later in his career. I remember waiting outside of a spring training game for hours for him to sign a baseball when I was 17. I came out of the clubhouse and there were like 3 of us standing there. 2 little kids and me. Bonds refused to sign anything because he said how was he to know we weren't gonna resell them to dealers. I remember saying he could even put my name on it. He still refused. I rooted against him after that.

The sweetest swing to ever hit a baseball .. Griffey Jr.. Hands down the best all around ball player in the last 50 years maybe ever... and is this generations HR king ..( with the level of pitching being significantly better in todays game, makes Griffey's career numbers even more impressive). My opinion... He is behind only Aaron and Ruth all time... Bonds, McGuire , ARod, all are excluded due to steroids...
I would say Mays is ahead of him too, and I am a huge Griffey fan - he is my favorite all time
Even if you want to ignore guys like Bonds, Mike Trout could retire today and go down as a better player than Griffey.
Better exclude Aaron because he admitted to using amphetamines.

Back when baseball was fun to watch and it wasn't boring like nowadays lame baseball from today's era they all want to be popular and want to be models back then we didn't had that girly stuff 60, 70s, 80s, and 90s rule it was the best baseball and basketball era there's no more era of good sports I'm talking facts I'm an 80s and 90s kid the best of sports best of movies best of everything something this new kids will never enjoy good things I'm gald I was born in 1983 confidence without ego 😎
