2019 Honda Super Cub Review

  • It was only seconds after hopping aboard the 2019 Honda C125 Super Cub that laughter started to erupt. Despite rainy weather and cool temperatures, we journos couldn’t help but smile on the new Super Cub, and we hadn’t even left the parking lot of 4077 Pico Blvd - the site of the original American Honda HQ. This is the effect the Super Cub has on people; even those whose job it is to test ride every motorcycle under the sun. It’s cute, it’s inviting, and it’s just fun. If you can’t have a laugh on it, you’re dead inside. In a world where digital media is stealing away everyone’s attention (including yours since you’re reading this), maybe the Honda Super Cub can reinvigorate motorcycling in America just as it did 57 years ago when the original Honda Super Cub (called the Honda 50 here in the States) arrived on these shores.

      @@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist Not sure who you are aiming that particular straw man at. I made no such accusation. You can do what you like, it's a free video, doesn't leave a lot of scope for whining, particular since the video isn't terrible or anything. I just took issue with what it was billed as, sorry if that ended up being the takeaway.

    I had a step-thru for eight years when I lived in Laos. Without reservation, I can say it was the best town/city transport I've ever owned, bar none. It was my main form of transport and rode it rain, hail, shine.

    Redic price. Meanwhile in Asia, they sell for $1500. If Honda ever wants to get serious about selling scoots in NA, they need to price them appropriately. For now, this will be the typical 2-3 year import, than Honda US will say they aren't selling enough to keep importing. Blah blah same old story 🙄

    • @rob_9876
      @rob_9876 Před 5 lety +11

      Yeah, for the price you can get a pretty good lightly used bike that can do interstate speeds - which is really a necessity for many American commuters. For most people to get one of these as a fun bike to run local errands on, it does need to be cheaper. I do think it's a cool little bike, and once they start showing up on Craigslist with 500 miles for sale at $1,800 I might be tempted.

    • @2011Kestrel
      @2011Kestrel Před 5 lety +4

      It’s easy to get good deals. Most people want instant gratification. They don’t wait for sales and they finance. Come in with cash when they have a sale and you will pay sticker price or lower. Get one that is a couple years old but still brand new. Most dealers wave the set up and freight fees and knock a couple bucks for the sticker if they are getting old.

If it had a bigger gas tank I would be thinking about one. Have a Ruckus but a bit on the slow side, but great for running errands on I like the flat floor for putting gas cans on to go get them filled. But would be great if the could make it in a 125 or a 150 cc. as I live in the country where every thing is 80 Kph.

    That price is of course way too high, but odd also. I live in Thailand and the Supercub, as another commenter pointed out is about $1500. What is odd is that the bikes I look at (bigger bikes mostly) cost anywhere from 30% to 100%+ more here than they do in the states--30% if it's manufactured in Thailand (like Triumph and several Honda models and others) it'll be closer to 30% above US price. If manufactured outside Thailand and imported, then 100% (or up to 400% for some luxury models).
    I remember the Honda 50 and Honda 90 as a kid in the US in the '60s. The price point and the ease of riding made them a big hit. I believe they couldn't call them "Supercubs" because Piper Aircraft had a souped-up, aerobatic version of the Piper Cub called the Supercub.

    It will be interesting to see how these do in dealers. If I had a big garage and deeper pockets, one would surely follow me home. I think the Monkey has a better shot of doing that right now.
    I'm relatively young at under 40, so my retro bike desires might suggest the millennial hipster influence. Rather, it is a product of my environment. My dad was a motorcycle mechanic and his brothers and many of his friends all rode. Bikes of the 60's-70's were just regular old bikes to me. I really wish Honda would build a "Trail 125" based off this platform. That would become a "shut up and take my money" situation. Something with off road ability really appeals to me. Almost bought a Suzuki Van Van, but ended up with a Yamaha SR400 instead. We shall see what the future holds.

      The SR400 is legit. I was going to say go with the TU250x over the Monkey but you've already got a main bike. I agree a trail 125 would be much more appealing than the rest. If I'm gonna be on a 125 i at least want it to have some dirt capabilty.

      @Bunnyshooter 223 I love it. It is not fast, but that big single is plenty torquey and it hauls my big (fat) butt around no problem and doesn't complain too much if I need to hit the interstate for a few miles at 70 mph. Mostly, I use it for tooling around on country roads at 50-55 mph which is it's happy spot. Kick starting is no problem (my first 3 bikes had no such electric start nonsense and were carb'd). It just feels like a proper motorbike with the one cylinder pumping along. It is one of those bikes that looks terrible on paper, but it all just makes sense once you ride one.

      @@pauld.b7129 The SR400 is actually my other "little" bike. I have a Yamaha Tracer GT and the SR. I used to have a Honda Africa Twin, CB1100, and a Grom. The Grom was a blast, but I got tired of not being able to cruise it comfortably at 55-60. I sold the Grom and was able to scoop up the SR for a very good price. I had been wanting a smaller, light-ish bike and it fit the bill. I actually had a Yamaha FZ09 for a few months until realizing I really wanted the Tracer GT. I traded off the Africa Twin and FZ for the Tracer. So, needless to say, I am a nut when it comes to trading, buying, and selling off bikes. Currently, I am pretty happy with my two rides.
