Most people have never seen 18k gold or higher purity except maybe gold coins you then shove into a security deposit box. It is so soft that it is not long-term durable and thus not often used in jewelry. Fake 18k gold is far more common, usually for display purposes. So the real thing does not look "right" to most people.

But wanting to melt it down again is also dumb. You could probably sell it for a profit to some rich gamers. As it is THE LTT gold controller, that would also justify a higher price.

But 83k for a controller that can be easily outperformed by a plastic version which worth like 100$ and is significant more heavy. Guys, I know how you could recoup some of the cost! You can smelt the gold back... and make a cpu radiator! Gold is said to be a great heat conductor. Since you have the material, why not try it? that's like 2 more videos (making the radiator and then benchmarking it), which will surely help!
Argument for keeping it: Gold is pretty steady, so keeping it isn't losing anything AND allows you to potentially profit off it more in the future and still melt it back down. But melt it now and you loose any potential future profits and all the craftsmanship is gone.
Basically think of it as forced savings. If you suddenly need 80k, you can melt it, otherwise keep it for potentially more profit.

this but unironically. me thinking the controller's worth more not melted is THE actual reason the idea of melting it down actually pains me.
They should tweak it to make it better to use, and milk more videos out of it.

You'd need to insure it though, which isn't free. Not terrible, but not free.
The problem is gold wouldn't lose its value, yet this model of xbox controller wouldn't be up to date forever. And the internals might not handle the adicional stress, specially the rb and lb that probably will break soon. I guess the best option is to auction it. It keeps existing and will be owned by someone who doesn't care as much about 80k as Linus's wife. The probable profit is a nice bonus too.

The best part of this video was definitely watching Linus' wife roast the shit out of him, and seeing him badly trying to convince her not to melt and sell the thing.
Still can’t get over the quality of the craftsmanship. I understand your wife’s point of view but it would be a real shame to melt it down. The jewelers did a great job working with you and created a true piece of art in the process. maybe work out a deal with an art museum or even Microsoft. They may be willing to buy it.

While gold has been trending down, due to last year's global event, governments have been printing money like crazy, which means currencies will get devalued, maybe not this month, not the next, but soon, in a bit. So with some delay, the price of gold will likely shoot up, one or two years downstream.

If its about the investment in gold, they can literally melt it down and keep the bar of gold in a safe and wait for its value to increase. There is absolutely no reason why it should be kept as a controller if its sole purpose was simply to make videos about it. The video is made, now what? Linus never planned far enough ahead of what to do next besides the cool factor and wanting to keep a gold controller. But as business owners, Yvonne is right. They are not rich enough yet to keep $87k in a gold controller just for the fun of it. In fact, Linus could do so many other cool projects if he reinvested that money into the company.

I think that some part of Linus was dying when Yvonne proposed to melted it down, because he maybe forgot to mention the alloy that was mixed in the casting process, so he didn't wanted to mention that it wouldn't be that simple to get the money back, since it wasn't pure gold anymore.
It wouldn't be terribly hard to purify, you have to do that for most sources of gold anyway.

If you're ever going to sell it, you definitely shouldn't melt it to sell the raw gold. Much like actual jewelry, it is probably worth quite a bit more as is than its actual weight in gold, simply due to the work that has been put in it.
also since they mixed in some other metals (impurities), to make the metal not as soft as pure gold, re-melting it to resell it they wouldn't get the actual value of the gold they spent on it? unless they can some how separate the gold from the impurities which costs money to do...

That controller is 100% worth more as a controller than melted back into solid gold. Aside from the fact it's a working solid gold controller, it's also a famous one now. If they do get rid of it, it would be worth selling it as is and I hope that's what happens.

I bet you could get upward of $500k US for something like this on the market. Not only in the middle east - Russia and even Europe have some pretty rich guys with x-boxes and a lot too much money, too.
After these videos, I am fairly confident they could auction this controller for, at least 250.000 USD. With that money, you can create another (better) one for Linus to have at his desk and even have enough profit to save his marriage.
