This novel, the premise and execution both, is so good.

I have read it few months ago. It is good but not great as his other work( i know comparing everything is a very bad habit) like bas lag, embassytown, paris. And i can say with utter confidence that China mieville is one of the best author risen in 21st century.

Thank you for mentioning alternatives/runners up. Sometimes these are BETTER than the winners or at least on par with them.

For those years when I think there was an undeserving winner, I will definitely be talking about what should have won.

"The City and the City" was one of the most brilliant mind-blowing novels and is way at the top of my favorite books ever. When I read it (before the novel was spoiler blurbed, as it had to be, I suppose) my impression was 'what the heck is going on here, this is nothing but word salad' - then at about the 1/4 or 1/3 mark: I finally 'got it' and it was brilliant. I didn't get the impression that there was anything supernatural or super-science about the separation of the cities (perhaps I should re-read :-) ) it was just a matter of strong social consensus, which only enhanced the jaw-dropping cleverness of the story for me, a commentary on the human mind and the power of social norms. I have held back from watching the TV series based on it, for fear of immense disappointment.

It's probably time to reread this book. I didn't love it as much as Miéville's other books the first time around, but I have a feeling my taste might have changed a little.

Excellent review my friend. I highly recommend the BBC miniseries adaptation, it pulls off the difficult task of visually depicting “unseeing” with special lenses and shot composition. I love the book and the series equally.

Love this book, and if you haven't seen the BBC 4-part adaption you should. I think it actually made some improvements to Borlu's motivation, the character of Korwi, and the way the ending comes about. I wonder how much Mieville was involved in that, because the Korwi of the miniseries bears a strong resemblance to one of Mieville's other female police characters, Lt. Cath Collingswood from "Kraken."

I did not really care for the show. But.... I'm picky when it comes to new SF. I might not be the best judge.
