I don't know how there could be 6 people that disliked this video. It was perfectly done.
The item is very useful, and why would anyone 'NOT' want to watch this? I loved it. Nice job Dave. I've never seen this before and now I'm richer in wisdom. Thanks Dave.

Thanks for sharing Dave. Been keeping my sewing/repair kit in an old, plastic medicine bottle. This'll give me a nice project to knock out. All the best for the new year to you and your family. Thanks again for passing on this kind of information, I fear that without people like you, this information would fade to time.

Good project! My husband had a keycase along the same line: a small flattish leather pouch, wide open at one end and a thong hole in the closed end. The leather thong had a stopper on the hole end and a ring for keys on the other end. The thong was just long enough to pull all the keys into the pouch with none hanging out. Kept keys from cutting his pocket. Sadly, he lost it a few years ago -- and the keys. Bought it at a craft show from a leather crafter.

David an easy way to rub coal into wood, bone, antler it is crush the coal (chair coal) between a folded cloth that is damp with oil (vegi oil or simular) and use a piece of wood like a rollingpin. the oil helps keep the powder from going all over the place and it makes a paint like substance. Also the coal impregnated cloth (I use GI wool blankets) can be used as a fire starter if you cant find anything dry at the time. I find it works better if you sew the sides together and have a flap over the top so its like an old time flap pouch and pack that with the coal and put that in a ziplock bag to store it and to place it in before you crush the coal.
Hope this helps you with later projects. If you want you can make a video of it for others if you wish to use it.
Thanks for all you have done so far,
    Sean Gere from NRW Germany.

Hey, David. This "A" in NALHUS. Does it look like this "Å". NAL = NÅL = Needle, HUS = House. So, NÅL + HUS = NÅLHUS (Needlehouse). Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Kirkenes in Finnmark,Norway :D

Dave, I really enjoy the historical relevance of these topics and I think this would be a neat nostalgia gift to make or gift to someone, especially if they're of Sami roots. From a modern perspective however, I'm not sure it would warrant belt carry unless one's simply trying to look historical. It seems it would be difficult to justify the weight or bulk of such an item (from a modern Longhunter's perspective) when the same thing is accomplished by gorilla taping a couple of needles to an old membership card and wrapping it with waxed twine. If I'm going to carry something this size wouldn't I carry a sewing awl? I guess I get confused at times knowing which critical tools "fit in" with your modern wilderness living ideas and which are just romantic trinkets which wouldn't necessarily be carried in an extended wilderness living situation.

Huh! Just made one of these last week. Not traditional and I definitely did not know what it was called. Just took a remnant of a carbon arrow shaft, glued insert into one end with a blunted target tip installed, dropped in the needles, and capped it with a spare nock. Then I wrapped one end with gorilla tape, the other end with electrical tape, and two diameters of thread in between. Thanks Dave for namin' it for me

Thank you for showing our tradition. What you shouldn't do is copy exact things if you see these in reindeer antlers. All designs are different but it belongs to our families in generations. and talking about which village and which family we come from. You are welcome to make one in the same shape. but never copy patterns found on them. Thanks

What you called this thing at 3:46 ,"Nalhus", sounds like Old Norse to me (I'm Swedish) and translated to modern Swedish it would be "Nålhus", literally "needle-house", and would be pronounced "Nool-hoos". I'm unsure of how you write phonetically in English, but Scandinavian words mostly have very long vowel sounds.

Dave the best of old ways of natural thread material is still the tail hair from a horse. 1)long strand of it will always and can pin a grown man no matter how strong he is. Will hold him to the ground. All this bet is: is to lay that single strand of hair from the tail of any horse and lay it across the point of a mans nose laying face up and hands tied behind his back hold that hair toute between ones hands or staked out on the sides of his head. The bet is; he will not sit up in a sit up position with that horse hair in place across his nose. Bet won. 'Cause it will cut the nose off clean threw his head before he ever gets to a sitting leaned up position ever. Surgeons still sew up after surgery and horse hair is still used that way today. It last and last for years and its the most perfect thread to have in any situation period. :) one strand of horse hair can be over 5foot long. And easily be attached ends togetother making it longer. Horse hair also makes a good down insulator for clothing items too. And multifunctional as readiness available in the cloth stored for more hairs to add to at a later date. Winter hair too. C-ya! :)
