  • In this video, we take the 3 Litre E36 build to the dyno to see if all of Luc's hard work was worth it.

    You need to enable write to ECU by connecting a wire from pin 14 to pin 18(on the 20pin connector) to be able to flash the ECU

      Yeah, there was a little miscommunication on the day but regardless it would have only been a few kW gain if we made changes 😄

      Have you tried to tune it yet?

  • @MegaMadmax1000

    Definitely worth upgrading to an m50 manifold, with a good tune you don't lose any low down power but gain power almost everywhere. Paired with a lightweight flywheel it's a huge upgrade, and the m52 manifold will be choking the 3L.
    My e36 has both the m50 manifold and light weight flywheel, and with a few other mods its quicker than my mates e46 330i, surprises a lot of people!

    • @fixbuildrace
      @fixbuildrace  Před 2 lety

      Yeah for sure. Definitely something the next owner could do to pick up some extra power

      Yes she will be soon sadly. It will be addressed in a later video. Don't worry thought we have another build starting soon!

      @@MegaMadmax1000 yep I'm having to sell the car due to going overseas for a while, so will be up for sale shortly. I agree after seeing the dyno graph, in this setup the m50 manifold would definitely benefit it especially with the ltw flywheel it runs. I had plans to go ITBS eventually which is why I left a lot of the intake side alone, but unfortunately I never got there and plans have changed so as jack says, a fun mod for the next owner to suss 👌👌

      @CODfanboysproduction Před 2 lety

      well yeah e46 330 weighs about 1600kg whereas the e36 weighs like 1300 max, quite a bit of weight difference explaining why the e36 is quicker

  • @328irossi
    @328irossi Před 2 lety +5

    Your would of gained a fair few BHP from sorting the fuelling alone, they run to rich on base map purely for safety , add a few degrees timing in the relevant cells and you have a quick machine.

    • @fixbuildrace
      @fixbuildrace  Před 2 lety

      Yeah the fueling was definitely a little out but something the new owner may want to do in the future 😄

    • @lucharries970
      @lucharries970 Před 2 lety +1

      @Ross D, the dme did already have a reflash on it, a known good tune with adjusted fuelling and more aggressive timing. Aim of this specific day was to try and refine it further. So as the tuner said it was pretty close, he would have pulled a little more fuel out up top and picking up maybe 2 or 3kw. So considering that the math suggests around 220 at the flywheel it's not far offer bmw E46 330i factory numbers. And as with all things there's a lot of variables Dyno to Dyno, engine to engine. The issue we had this specific day was originally the dme was reflashed on a bench setup, and the car was never bridged/pinned to accept the rewrite from the obd port.
      At the end of the day the car was considerably quicker than a factory 328i and put a lot of smiles on my face, and that's what mattered to me :)

    Sounds really good, whats the exact setup? Pipe sizing, headers, resonator, back box etc

    • @lucharries970

      Headers were a custom job but similar to if supersprint did a short tube header. Proper 3-1 merged collector rather than factory log style. All 2-1/4 inch piping. Then 2 wide radius bends to cross from the rhs to mid/ lhs of the car just before the gearbox, then a 2-1merge into a 2.5" pipe. (If I'd have been designing the exhaust originally I would have the join to single pipe before the bends) then 2.5 single into a Coby hotdog resonator (was thinking about changing to a vibrant ultra resonator to refine the sound further but didn't happen ) then out again at 2.5 single, then into a universal stainless single in twin tips out back box.
      Head was also ported so that would change the sound slightly too.

      @@lucharries970 Thanks for the very detailed explanation. These motors just have a tendency to get super raspy and tinny while NA, and yours is not really. I think the move is single pipe. I have Super Sprint euro M3 longtube header knock offs into a full dual 2,25 inch stainless system with 2 high flow cats, into a Scorpion M3 muffler. No resonators. It's super loud and very metallic. I have some Vibrant resonators i'm going to weld in, not the Ultra Quiets unfortunately, theres not enough room.

    And a stock m54 which you took the parts out of, makes the same power...

    • @rokker17
      @rokker17 Před 6 měsíci +2

      This is arguably more reliable than a stock M54, Especially considering the aluminum block of the m54 (since you're comparing this to a stock form m54)

    • @lucharries970
      @lucharries970 Před 4 měsíci

      The m54 I took the parts out of was not running/ had no cylinder head! So wasn't much good :/
      The new owner ended up tuning it again and got 230hp at the wheels.
      But yeah as above the earlier m5x engines are simpler, more reliable and I had more parts/availability to parts to be able to build this! At the time there were more people building and selling new unused +second hand E36 engine parts than there were E46!

  • @SunsetWingman

    No M50 manifold? Dog...

    • @lucharries970
      @lucharries970 Před 4 měsíci

      There were plans to do this in stages and install an ITB setup, hence prepping for it with the ported head and m54 intake cam. However plans changed and I moved countries and sold the car....
      Also as the 3L makes more base torque I was curious to see what the torque curve looked like keeping the m52 manifold since it works to hold peak torque at a lower rpm. It resulted in a very torquey mid range that worked well for pulling off the line and also pulling out of low speed corners.
