My biggest takeaway from this challenge is that we, as designers, are solving a problem.
Speaking for myself, I often just resort to the design I think “looks the best” when in reality, it should be “what solves the problem best”.
Love what you’re doing for us young people, Chris! In some way, I feel like I’m learning from you directly!

Entrepreneurs and C-Suite executives really struggle to provide adequate design briefs. As one myself, I really want to learn how to communicate better with my designers (personally I struggle to articulate what's on my mind).
A video breaking down how to properly communicate with designers would be super super helpful and help many businesses become better customers (thus achieving superior results for both you and the client). Any advice is greatly appreciated 😊

Second that. I have had clients who allow me to go in one direction for a long time only to tell me it was wrong from the beginning. I find it difficult to deal with situations like that. It is difficult to read what exactly is on their mind and they are so busy to communicate.

I totally agree with you on the fact that you should not change the packaging. I am a package designer and even the smallest of size change can save so much money for a company. There have been times when I would have to re-lay out dies that are a millimeter smaller but somehow it saves them tons of money. Following directions and hitting the core points of hierarchy are so critical in package design and I felt you definitely explained it well going through these critiques. Also a good challenge would be to have the designers work with translations as well. That could really throw a monkey wrench in the process because to get translations to flow well with the primary language can be so crucial to the design. Just a suggestion. :)

I find it great that on top of pointing out the flaws you also offer some solutions to those problems, too, so they can keep on exploring for what works and it also makes it easier to think about how to improve upon those mistakes.

In my opinion, my favourite was sharif’s product - I liked the fact that he didn’t change the product’s original colours and swap them for something extremely different (coz in the real world most clients won’t allow that). He took the best elements from a relatively generic and in some ways unattractive product and transformed it without making it look radically different (and that’s not easy). But Sean’s was great too! Loving this series !!!!

I bet on the Sensodyne one too. What I loved is at first glance, I really thought that was the original packaging. Not to take anything away from the redesign ofcourse, haha - but it goes to show how the brand essence was really kept together. Clean, minty dental hygiene. Kudos!

Great video, very informative for all levels. My one critique: It sounds based on the guys' videos that they were asked "why do you think you should win." That's just never a good question. It's asking the contestant to inject ego into their presentation, which is a bad habit to get into if you're ever presenting to clients. The answers it seemed to get weren't great points about their designs, but woe-is-me arguments for why their task was harder. A better question would be "how do you think your design succeeds" or "what makes your design stand out." It's important for new designers to remember that they're defending their designs, not themselves.

The Closol packaging was very nice, I did feel it elevated the product but it did miss some key information. The Covonia brand looked much cleaner and communicated the information, however, I agree that bull logo hurt this product on the shelf by making it harder for the consumer to identify. Now the Sensodyne packaging I feel did communicate that electric shock feeling (I know what you mean Chris) in the original design. I will say the new design feels like it is prescription only, which may give the consumer more trust in this toothpaste working if sitting on the shelf. The soap I feel is a miss, I always have the Paul Rand "is it decoration, or communicating" in my ear when I am designing something. The Gold Bond, in the beginning of a design if you switch from idea to idea, usually this is a sign that nothing is working correctly. Going back and pushing a design further is where the good stuff starts to happen. Great series so far! I always learn from Chris deconstructing designs. To understand how he thinks when looking at designs will take any designer to another level. Thanks Futur team.

last time it felt easier to choose a winner. The general approach was to reduce clutter and make the product easier to recognize.
If i see those new designs on a shelf I would never ever expect them to be the work of designers in their 18 to early 20s.
great job guys! keep making Chris's decision more and more difficult muahahaha :D

    young guns 5
good way to judge your work:
    - product position
    - shelf present
    - better than others
    - communication
important stuff should be clear for the consumer.
feature the unique parts of the product" highlight it"
    search about design elements.
to separate the lines of typing
its better to use dash instead of lines
solve the logos issue or it will get distracted
or it will become more than one logo "simplify it"
    some notes I took
    thank you very much
    keep it up.

This is so cool Chris, really enjoyed this series! Wish these kind of comps were around when I was still at design school :) Totally agree with all your points, its so so so much about the end user with packaging especially, and you have to consider the brand legacy and what all the original elements mean to the existing brand. Now these guys had it tough and didn't have the chance to talk to the Brands/companys about their product before diving into research and a redesign. So well done guys!

Great job from the Young Guns! I love their fresh ideas. As a seasoned packaging designer, I must say that it is important for young packaging designers to learn about FDA regulatory requirements in addition to design itself. This is another thing that would never be taught in school, or even from Art Directors. For Gold Bond especially, the Drug Facts panel could never have the curved shape, even though it is a cool idea. Understanding the restrictions helps designers to focus on what they can control in terms of creativity. Awesome critique, Chris. I am glad you pointed out important factors like having the Net Wt and active ingredients large enough. As I have worked with regulatory attorneys, I am now super detailed about these elements just as much as the creative ideas themselves :)

The only thing I would have liked to see more of is the shelf presence of their final products. No design exists in a vacuum. From a merchandising standpoint you want to make sure your packaging stands out among the competitors that are beside it.

I love Sean’s work too. Even though I like just leaving the word mark and logo in the front, I would consider to put “complete production” in the front too. So when it’s on shelf with other series products under Sensodyne, people can tell what’s the use of this product without picking it up.

I would suggest to put up a design competition of architectural presentations as it has to convey the whole project details. I don't know if it's appropriate but it will be really worth it to do. Looking forward, cheers.

I feel that I tend to make similar mistakes as Spencer, where there are so many choices to make I tend to move forward incoherently in my design. I try picking a logo or visual composition to go on with, but my mind is still trying to come up with new ideas all the while. In the end, my designs don't tie in together and feels 'unfinished'. Great to see a series like this and get ideas on how to solve various design issues! :D

Great critique. Though I think the Sensodyne package still doesn't clearly communicate tooth sensitivity, the smile shape gives off more of a fresh breath message than tooth protection which the brand is all about.

I had "money" on the Sensodyne or Khadi design and Sensodyne was a definite win, esp after Chris' evaluation which helped remove some misplaced notions of the positives of some design elements i thought were on point especially on the GB one. Well done to all Young Guns, they did well. Oooh and great postpro with the spray effect and the noise effect on the Sensodyne sensitivity!

Little bit more context on Khadi Brand. "Wear khadi" was a part of the Indian independence movement "Swadeshi" and the developing Indian nationalism was an economic strategy aimed at removing the British Empire from power and improving economic conditions in India by following the principles of swadeshi and which had some success. So I think they are trying to tell that this is a product made in India with materials also produced in India.
Definition of swadeshi - (of manufactured goods) made in India from materials that have also been produced in India.
also, the logo comes from the Cotton flower. When you pluck cotton from flower it leaves the shapes smiler to the logo.

About the cotton, I think manny beaty prodicts for skin has an appeal to the touch. So the product beign an soup, maybe the tought is that your skin will have a soft touch, like cotton.
