What Did This Vision REVEAL About Daemon & Aemond?

  • The Daemon visions in House of The Dragon reveal a lot thematically.
I think most audiences and book readers have been able to draw the comparisons between Daemon and Aemond pretty easily. And even though these two characters are not seen directly interacting with each other outside of one scene in episode 8 of season one, House of The Dragon has put plenty on display for the audience to recognize these similarities.
But that still doesn’t truly explain why Daemon sees himself disguised as Aemond when he has his visions in Episode 4 of Season 2. Obviously Harrenhal is drawing out a lot of thoughts and emotions from Daemon, and it’s playing into the curse or the haunting legends attached to the castle itself. Many of these visions seem to play on Daemon inner conflicts, subconscious, and even some of his guilt. We can identify mostly why these visions have attached themselves to Daemon. However, this moment where Daemon sees himself disguised as Aemond, really doesn’t fall into these other categories, and there seems to be no true connection between Daemon and his nephew, at least plotwise. So it does come across as just strange and just a way for the showrunners for House of The Dragon to just play with their audience’s expectations and hit us with a little bit of shock value. But this is just a very surface level way of viewing this. I think there’s tremendous connections between Daemon and Aemond, and while it’s not exactly plot driven, these two characters are being driven by very similar conflicts, and they are very much attached thematically.

Remember in the very first episode of the series when Aemma told Viserys that Rhaenyra wanted her sister to be called Visenya and Viserys answered "we already have a Visenya in the family" referring to Daemon. Somehow, both Daemon and Aemond seem to be reincarnations of Visenya. I don't mean it literally, but symbolically, both seem to possess that savagery, brutality and ambition Visenya had. From what we can read from Fire and Blood, Visenya was ruthless and commanding just as her two descendants. She was most likely jealous of how Aegon I preferred Rhaenys over her and she ultimately put her son on the throne in part because she saw Rhaeny's line as weak, but also because she wanted that crown herself and her bloodline all along. Daemon has Visenya's sword (Dark Sister) and Aemond has Visenya's dragon (Vhagar).

And let's not forget, Vhagar was Visenya's dragon, but it was also Laena's, which is yet another connection between them, and one that might play a role in the details of their duel

This makes me want to see aegons conquest so bad. I can see Aegon being a very noble Jon Snow type. Rhaenys likely being more alike to Daenyrys. Would be so fun seeing Visenya holding back her jealousy and ruthlessness from her siblings. All while being a complete badass

The writers are conveying a deeper introspection within Daemon as he reflects on his influence over the unfolding events. He subconsciously wonders if Aemond would have become the person he is now if Daemon hadn't been so openly ruthless. Aemond's idolization of Daemon from a young age is evident, suggesting that Daemon's actions and demeanor significantly shaped Aemond's character and choices. This raises the question of how much of Aemond's behavior is a reflection of Daemon's own ruthlessness and whether things might have been different had Daemon been a different kind of role model.

I don’t think Daemon wanted the throne for himself as much as Aemond. I think Daemon wanted to protect his brother’s throne from people like Otto Hightower who seemed bent on getting closer to the king. Daemon went so far as to wed his niece and even got fealty oaths for her after his brother’s death. Aemond really wants the throne because he sees his brother Aegon not really interested in his birthright as well as his bride. Outside of that, uncle and nephew are similar as warriors and dragon riders. They also know how to inspire loyalty from their men.

When Alys gave a Jojen paste to Daemon, it put him into an acid trip and became even more unhinged.
Makes me wonder if her sexual encounter with Aemond was actually consensual or was it like when Lysa SA’d Littlefinger when he’s drunk? Aemond could be under the great influence of Jojen paste and Alys’ dark magic big time. That’s why he spared her life while executing her whole family (or maybe she’s just that hot) and suddenly became so obsessed with her when he’s at Harrenhal. And what happened to their kid inside her womb? What became of their child now?

I've been saying this since last season, knowing there are rumors in the book that Daemon slept with Alicent, and in season 1 when Rhaenyra toasts Alicent for being a "faithful wife" to Viserys... they cut to Daemon who looks awfully guilty the way his eyes shift. Also would make sense that he would sleep with Alicent to get back at Viserys for exiling him. Plus Alicent gets all jealous and bent out of shape when she finds out Rhaenyra was spotted in a pleasure house with Daemon "coupling"... the hair, the demeanor etc etc. long story short I think Aemond is Daemon's son.

And as usual, one more TB member is portrayed as still-redeemable in-show, while TG member as "extreme/lost cause", but yeah, makes sense, even more considering how the guards return to KL saying that Aegon was the one to defeat Meleys, when it was actually Aemond to deliver the fatal blow (but iirc in the books Aegon was the one to give the idea, so it ended up as a joint effort, unlike the show). And here I thought his name was Aemond because Martin isn't creative with names, so he used the name of his favorite character and anagram'ed it just because XDD Like, for someone that literally names a charater as "gene pool/Jeyne Poole", he was running out of ideas, so Anagrams were his salvation. Coming to think of it now, impressive how he's always connected with old women: madam (show), vhagar (book/show), Alys (book says she's actually waay older than she looks), but I'm more interested in Alys now, I love her connection with magic and it's a chance to bring this element back!

Aemond has love for his brother as his brother has love for him. Displayed in the scene where Aemond starts trouble with the strong boys and Aegon gets involved without hesitation. The off cam scene where Aegon influences Aemond to join in with his whoring might be a way he attempts to connect with his younger brother. When Aemond names Aegon during the whole eye loss situation he doesn't deflect immediately and say I don't know what he's talking about he covers for his younger brother. They do have love for eachother or at least if not a sense of duty towards one another. As a result the conclusion your take reaches when it speaks of the lack of love between the brothers as a premise is incorrect. The latest episode might be warping your opinion so I'll ask this question:
If you were Aemond how else would you seperate Aegon and Sunfyre from Meleys who was ravaging the dragon. What other way would you think of? Get in close? and risk Vhagar possibly destroying and attacking both dragons ending your own brothers life?. Focus the dracarys blast solely on meleys allowing meleys to still have ahold of the king possibly giving Rhaenys the option of chomping and finishing your brother and king with ease? Or would you take Aemonds route and fire at the region of Meleys mouth that holds Sunfyre to set the dragon free?
I think Aemond fired on Aegons dragon in an attempt to seperate the two dragons. and then finish of meleys. He was already making the gesture of sheating his blade when Criston walked in on him. He did not intend to kill Aegon. If he did. Aegon would already be dead.
