How Game of Thrones FAILED Cersei Lannister
The GIGANTIC Failure of Season 7 & Queen Cersei
So once upon a time in Game of Thrones, the show had established A Mad Queen, and it was not a jarring, poorly developed character arc that forces you to retcon and reframe everything for that character’s story up until that point - No, I’m not talking about this nonsense that some fans pretend was telegraphed all the way back in season 1, but we’ll touch on that later in this video. I’m talking about a character that was on a descent to madness from the start, eventually culminating in what could only be compared to a real world attack on St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Don’t ever forget that. Cersei Lannister blew up Westeros’ version of St Peter’s Basilica.

A lot of people have some problems with the MAd Queen Arc for Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. I remember being really disappointed in the arcs of Cersi and Danaerys. The conclusion to Cersi's feud with the high Septon was quite enjoyable imo. But then it was just kind of ignored. While Dany's plotline just stopped making sense. Dany is honestly one of the most moral leaders in the show. But then she suddenly decides that saving innocent people doesn’t matter to her. While Tyrion suddenly does care about innocent people now? Whole thing is weird

    Cersei murdered her own son and last living child by pushing him to suicide. She showed no remorse for his death. Why they switched to Dany as the villain was one of the biggest puzzles in the terrible final season.

    The most obvous explanation is that the showrunners knew the ending George planned for some characters including Daenerys but didn't know how to arrive there and most of all, refused to at least give more time to the series in order for it to feel more natural.

    I agree. Especially given that Book!Cersei is becoming absolutely unhinged and definitely heading down the Mad Queen route, I thought for sure that's what we were going to get in the show after she blew up the sept. It made the most sense, and it baffles me that there was just... no fallout at all? No small folk uprising? No Jaime being absolutely horrified by what she did and deciding he was 100% done with her and couldn't stand by her anymore? Nothing? Her biggest flaw, at least in the books, is that she genuinely believes she's some Machiavellian mastermind like Tywin -- but she's absolutely not, and so many players take advantage of that and nudge her further into madness. I wish the show had done the same.

    Dani couldnt have had babies. She was a product of a long line of inc3st and there comes a point when one is so inbred that a 'blockage' happens and that line ends. Also, her father was the mad king (which was probably another consequence of his parents & grandparents also being inbred). Dani probably would have gone mad just like he did, which is kind of what she did. His last words were "burn them all". Thats exactly what she did.

    I always thought she'd be the Mad Queen in the book, with the references to wildfire. Ned descibed her green eyes "burned like wildfire" in the sun during their meeting in the gardens. She was the one who originally commissioned the alchemists to make a new batch for the siege of King's Landing. She also blew up the Tower of the Hand with wildfire during Tommen's wedding, for entertainment.

    The burning scene is definitely not equal to the pie scene or the hound feeding. You have to remember the context of those charakters. After all Ramsay did to Sansa, him being fed to his dogs is much too mild of an end. That is some well earned revenge. And the Freys betrayed Aryas family that ended with the murder of her brother and mother. I agree that baking them into pies is a psycho move, but i would also say that Arya is a Soziopath without empathy. At least at this point in the story. Compared to that, the Tarlys were just doing their job in protecting their home from foreign invaders. Dany leading an army of foreigners to invade, makes her a foreign invader, despite her birthplace. Not to mention that burning alive is one of the worst ways to die. So yeah, i still think her sentence was unnecessarily cruel.

    There was no madness at all. She was bristling with anger because Cersei had killed two of her children (or caused their deaths by not showing up). Every last character in the show had done something JUST as vicious or anger-induced. Right or wrong is an argument, but they're all the same. But she's the Mad Queen bc she's a Targaryen? Nonsense. Even destroying Kings Landing is a wartime decision, to stop some tyrant or despot from then claiming the empty seat left by Cersei dying, the moment Danny goes back home to Dragonstone. Was it right? Maybe not. But only in the context where they hold Danny to some other standard than *literally everyone else*.

  • @Stay_Zerose
    @Stay_Zerose Před dnem

    Cersei simply put overstayed her welcome in the story, because there is no Young Griff, there is no person to rival Dany for the throne, which leaves Cersei to fill that void. In the books it is very likely she dies or is kidnapped basically becoming irrelevant to the power structure of Westeros soon after the death of her children. The problem is that when you have to cut so much earlier in a story, you don't see the ramifications early enough, the problem was that because there is no young griff, no one other than Cersei is left to take the throne and you can't have no one be in power for the end of your story because then what, Dany arrives to no resistance. At this point, Joffery is dead, Tommen is dead, Marcella is dead, Margery is dead, Stannis is dead, Shireen is dead, Renly is dead, all of Roberts Bastards are dead bar Gendry, so short of Cersei slapping Gendry on the iron throne there really is no other option left for the writers and the result of that is bad television.

    To say the situation that makes Cersei queen isn't contrived is either you outright lying or just not understanding the way the world works. Cersei has no legal claim to be anywhere near the throne once her children are dead. The throne was never conquered by the Lannisters. The entire realm is still operating under the myth that Cersei's children are also Robert's. All power derives from Robert. No power comes from Cersei. Her blowing up the Sect of Baelor is probably the quickest way for her to lose her head. We also know from history that half of Westeros will jump at the chance to kill some woman who decided that she would lead them. Also, no one is backing Cersei. Tywin is long dead at this point so why would anyone listen to her. This is still one of the dumbest things the show does.

    There are a lot of people to blame for the GoT S6-8....but I mainly blame George R. R. Martin for not finishing his books before the series caught up to it. I mean, he shouldn't have agreed for the adaptation before making sure to finish it. These production companies cannot just postponed several seasons because the source materials haven't finished yet, the actors get older, they may take other projects that would clash with GoT filming schedule, etc. Had Martin finished his series, the GoT show would've ended differently.

As it was, the show didn't "earn" Daeny's "Mad Queen" turn, it felt shoehorned in and out of place, and as pointed out in this very video, ignores her character arc that came before that point. They needed to give her more reasons to "go" mad and they failed spectacularly.

    The argument for the realm being held together by her and Robert's marriage would be that Robert is essentially a usurper. Although he does have a claim to the thone (technically) on his mother's side, it's a tenuous one. His legitimacy as King is basically based on the fact that he took it through force of arms. But by marrying Cersei, he created an alliance with the most powerful and influential House in the realm. It's not strictly about Robert and Cersei. It's about House Baratheon and House Lannister. If the Lannisters are acknowledging Robert as King by marrying their daughter to him and installing a Lannister King, is essentially unites all the various political factions in Westeros behind the pairing, irrespective of which side they took in the civil war.

    I totally agree with you! Even from the beginning, Daenerys showed signs of being a good ruler and care for the "smallfolk" unlike Cersei or anyone else, she was a morally gray character in the way that she had to make tough decisions to establish her power. It could've been more realistic and intriguing to see her navigating her struggle to power amidst the grief of losing one of her dragons and some of her most loyal companions but still having that compassion that she always had towards the innocents. Heck, Cersei was literally like the mad king and yet the showrunners decided to soften her character and flipped their entire personalities.
