- In this video I review my Boston Marathon 2024
I made a video previewing my Boston Marathon 2024 and all the things that happened before I left Ireland. I this video I go through what happened after I landed in Boston, my preparations in the run up to the race, or the race up to the riun, as well as the Boston Marathon 2024 itself.
Thanks to everyone for such wonderful support!

Hello from Wellesley College! It’s one of my favorite traditions at school, I screamed for about 3 hours straight until I lost my voice 😂. Always inspiring to see the runners and I’m glad we could cheer you on :)
Apologies. I thought I replied earlier. I was so thrilled to see all the students out (I teach design in the Technological University Dublin). I got such a buzz as I ran along and am grateful to all you and your colleagues for screaming your heads off. I would love to hear a scream off with Wellesley on one side of the road and Boston College on the other! Very best wishes for your studies.
Are you the “kiss me I’m Irish” poster girl? Great turnout and sound well done and thanks to you all! I think the crowd was a lot bigger earlier than this vid (while this is still v.good)
4 Boston Marathons, and always my fastest mile is where Wellesley college is! impossible not to speed up with such energy.
I really enjoyed your detailed recap of the event. Thanks for sharing your experience and well done on finishing and achieving a long held goal. Great stuff! 👍
Thanks! It was a long goal, something I always need, and it really was sweet to achieve it.
Awww, Barry, thank you for helping me relive my Boston from three days ago, my 12th finish. I think you may have been one corral in front of me. I just love your thoughtful, reflective, sympathetic recap of what this is all about. "Right on Hereford, Left on Boylston" brings tears to my eyes... and at the age of 69, every time I am here is more special than ever before. Barry, this is a great video. Thank you!
12 is a great achievement Jonathan! I would love to just train on the course. Run up and down and along for the sheer love of the way the road flows.. Boston is a very special experience.
Let me just get my popcorn, boy this is a long one, love this race recap videos 😅🍿 Well done, Barry! What Major next?
Whatever one I can get into. Tokyo or London or both. I’m in the Abbott WMM draws…If I don’t win one I will go with a Tour Operator…
@@OldManRunner 🤞 crossed for either of those... and if Sydney gets accepted, you may have another option 🤝
Rooting for you Barry as an older runner myself! You’re an inspiration to my knee that hopefully still hold lol
Your channel just showed up in my feed, so I decided to watch and really enjoyed it so I’ve subscribed.
Cheers Joe! Hope to review all six of the major marathons. Tokyo and London left to do (not tomorrow) and then probably Sydney I guess…
Thanks for a great recap, from another old guy out there with you running it.
Cheers Heinrich!
Great video. Thanks for all your efforts in putting this together and continue to have many happy miles with the wind at your back!
Cheers Richard!
Thank you for taking us with you in this one as well, this was amazing. So glad to see you enjoyed it so much, until the next one Barry.
Always great to hear from you Panos. Started making the video for the next one, which is very special to me for reasons that will become apparent...
Excellent and comprehensive review as ever Barry!
Thanks! Training starts tomorrow for the next one...
So enjoyable to watch these, such a nice, solid structure 💪
Delightful! Congratulations 🎉
Cheers Sharon!
Wonderful recap ! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
congratulations!! great video!!
Thanks!
Amazing recap -- thank you for taking the time to share your experience!
Cheers Andrew!
I knew the recap was coming... love it! Awesome job on your Boston run
Cheers Andrew!
Excellent video! Your videos are always so enjoyable to watch. Congrats on Boston!!
Thanks! I have a hoot making them, and gives me a great excuse to get going. Next Marathon in 9 weeks, 3 days!
Congratulations on running Boston! I too find it very challenging just qualify for the event! As always I really enjoy the videos you create! 💪🏃🏻
Thanks William. It was nice to have a reason to be delighted turning 60! The Boston Qulaifgying time dropped!
Next level preparation, congratulations 🎉🎉
I think it's a sickness!
Thanks for sharing your experience Barry, I enjoyed every minute. I love all the details, the flight, the day before, pre race etc. I’m running a local marathon on Sunday, going through my checklist, worrying about last minute pains…this was perfect viewing and a reminder that we mustn’t forget to enjoy the whole thing!
Cheers Guy! Heading off in an hour, after an incredible trip.
wonderful
Thank YOU!!!
Thank you so much, the support menat so much to me and I am sure all the other runners. I was thinking of how proud Wellesley should be of all of you (I am on the faculty of the Technological University Dublin) I would also love a shout off with you on one side of the street and Boston College on the other. That would be something!
Congratulations 🎉
Thanks!
Barry, took your audio recap on my jog walk this morning = what a recap, what a race, what a run by you = chapeau ❤
Now it's time to watch it at my desk.
Glad you loved Boston = i loved every moment of the vlog.
I noticed in comments below discussion of your next Major, I'm crossing my fingers that Sydney will be added soon and you get that as another option 🤞
Just keep running along 🤝
Bartek. Thanks so much for all of your support, and your messages before the off. Made the run even more special and I thought of your advice the whole time. I saw on Strava that you shared your news. Very best wishes for the fight ahead. I am pretty certain Sydney will be added. Looking forward to seeing you when it does...even if I need to tag on a trip to Melbourne
@@OldManRunner thank you again Barry 🤝
And to you, a smooth marathon recovery, hope your quads held on until you made it home = mine typically let me know all about it by day 2 😂
Day 2 is always the worst. But to be honest I am fine. Next Marathon in 9 weeks and 3 days and I am excited to get into training again. And it will be a special experience...which will become apparent...Greetings from JFK by the way....hopping on JetBlue home in a couple of hours and straight into online meetings. I made another one of my This is Not about Running videos. To be honest I love making them. The Boston review is still proving popular so will release it as soon as that levels off.
Hell of a video 💪 congratulations Barry. Proud of you uncle. Vienna marathon for me this weekends 🤝
And I am proud of you young man! Have a whirl in Vienna!
one of the most video that I loved
you are the best.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Chapeau Barry. I'm so glad you enjoyed the race. Your review was excellent, and the bit of footage of right onto Hereford, left onto Boylston gave me goosebumps from last yesr 😀
I kind of got goosebumps myself. They really are the two Holy Grail corners for marathon runners, Will live forever in my memories
Thank you for the review Barry. I am looking forward to hopefully participating in the 2025 Boston Marathon.
Have a great time of it Kenneth. I am still thinking of the course over and over in my head. Would love to just run it to learn it. It is completely and utterly beguiling
Good job Barry!
Thanks Mike
So personable, amazing experience!
Thanks! Work tomorrow and this will all seem like a dream, a very happy one...
I will be using the pillow trick, thanks!
I was here struggling with the race dots before the Boston 5k and then remembered what I did before, made life so much easier...
Well done Barry; great video as always. 26.2 - Almost as good as a Guinness; Sláinte
It tasted beautiful… shame it is a limited edition!
That was so informative ..I love watching all the build up days to Boston that people share and race reports but this is the only one that’s made me want to actually do it myself. Obv should I ever qualify of course. Thanks ☺️
It took me years to qualify and I honestly was never sure if I could. But one day it all clicked in Rotterdam. So I recommend Rotterdam, oh and turning 60! Best wishes on qualifying!
@@OldManRunner that’s me next year then haha with age. I’ll look at Rotterdam Thankyou for that
Man. That sounds like it was an amazing experience. Wonderful recap. I don't know if I'll ever qualify for Boston, but it sounds like a tough but special event.
It really is. I put all the hard work into getting here, being here was the icing on the cake...
Listening to your experiences brought back fond back memories of my first five Bostons. It never gets old. Mercifully, my injuries are behind me, I BQed again, so I'll be back next year. I would have been in the same wave with you this year had it not been for the 5:29. Nonetheless, we may be in the same wave next year. Cheers, Barry.
Five Bostons is special! Six more so. What a race, event, celebration!
@@OldManRunner It's a truly magical experience.
Nice recap. I hope someday I can qualify for Boston. If you ever do NYC again. I highly recommend doing the 5k. You get to run through Times Square
I have added the NYC half to my long bucket list for that reason…Hope you get to do Boston.
@@OldManRunner I live in NYC. The half is amazing.I'm fortunate enough to be able to do the NYC Marathon and Half each year. I'm hoping some day to do a few European Races.
@@eulogyforadream Rotterdam is awesome. Haven’t done Valencia but hope to. Ran Zürich and loved it…
I hear you on the 5k (I wish we both had done NY), If they do one in future events I partake in , I will be happy to do it rather then the current 'shakeout' craze. Thanks for a brilliant review . I have saved it as it will be part of my study for next year. The warmth was unexpected ! ( my wife won''t even let me take my pillow , never mind a set of scales )
I am going to do the NYC Half at some stage. The Cabbage Patch 10 in London is on my radar, entries open soon...
Congrats on completing Boston, I really enjoy watching your videos so thanks. One day I'd love to get to do Boston Marathon but I'm a middle of the pack runner so won't qualify that's for sure. I was wondering how the Kendal Mint worked out for you ? like you, I always used Maurten but can't seem to take it any more so looking for alternatives. Well done and thanks again.
Hello Kevin, great to hear you enjoyed the videos. The Kendal Mint worked out great for me. I used the Mint flavour which has caffeine and the Strawberry Mint which does not and alternated. I had no GI issues in training or the race and I like the taste of the Kendal Mint. I will be using it again in the next marathon. in 9 weeks and 2 Days!
Thanks for the recap on Boston, its now on my bucket list but will need to quicker, the crowd control looked better in Boston than New York last year, although would be hard to beat the noise of New York
It may have just been me, but Boston seemed way louder, perhaps its the long silences and the build up, either way they are both stunning experiences
"you do know you are in a race maybe a good idea to run part of it" - Love this sentence..
Stryd power on the uphills will be high, making it really easy to hold targets and do so comfortably. On the downhills it is very difficult to hold power, but you know the pace is fine. I now tend to just forward lean and let my body carry me. And I practice this is training frequently. Now that I trust the Nike airpods in the AlphaFly / Tempo Next% they REALLY help on the downhills. Which I wear exclusively on my downhill runs, and my quads never feel bad afterwards or the next day. I make my attempt to get a bib for Boston 2025 in less than 4 weeks.
Really appreciate the journey you took us on, and I hope I have need to want to watch this again in April 2025!
Tim. All the very best for the the bib bid! I am going to practice more with the Stryd on hills
@@OldManRunner Race day went well, even with a 2min emergency porta potty stop. Under BQ by 8:36mins, and over a 10min PB. Time for some rest, a short 10k block, and then my block for Chicago 2024...while I wait to see if I get cut from Boston 2025....days before I run Chicago 2024...
8:36. Well done! Hope it’s enough but I know the feeling of waiting! I also know the feeling of going out too fast in Chicago! Enjoy
Great recap Barry, good to see you enjoying it, sometimes we focus on times too much.
Interested to hear your stryd comments, I think that's down to your power refresh, personally I do every 10 seconds.
I hope one day to qualify myself and like you I regret not doing the 5k the day before NY.
Did Chicago last year, no urinals there, scraped into my pen after queuing so long.
Out of interest is there anything you would have done differently? Doesn't sound like it.
I wouldn’t change a thing, well nothing I can think of. Almost 9% of runners visited the medical tents and 126 were taken to hospital (38 still in hospital, thankfully none critical) 980 didn’t finish. So I am happy with the choices I made. The toilet queues in Chicago are a disgrace. Hence why so many men are peeing under the first underpass.
Barry, I enjoyed listening to your Boston experience. Again, congratulations and you deserved it. It was an unusually hot day apparently which made it more challenging but also made it more memorable. Cheers!
You made an observation about Stryd in your video that you were going too fast. Since I got Stryd I didn't yet follow a Stryd plan but I am checking out the suggested Watts on the races and it looks like I need to get significantly better in downhill running because I find it quite challenging to keep up to the recommended watts. I wish Stryd had a Garmin PacePro like system where it broke down the race into segments of different watts.
What is next? London or Tokyo?
Tolunay. I’m going to have to practice a little more with Stryd in races. My next two marathons are decided. Dingle in Ireland being one that will suit Stryd. I’m hoping to take my drone and a variety of cameras. Dingle is very beautiful. In an ideal world I would run Tokyo and then London. I lived in London for seven or so very happy years. The race runs on one of the streets I lived on. My plan was to do it last but who knows. I am lucky to have visited Tokyo London and Sydney and would love to run them all. My guess is Sydney will be added before I complete the six. Nice to always have goals…
Well-told, Barry. Those individualized acts of random kindness! It’s a harder course than anticipated, eh? You distinguished yourself with Irish Dignity. “[T]he pledges of life outlasts a lifetime.”
Yes, so many acts of kindness, hundreds of which I could not stop for, but Troy, that watermelon! It was harder than anticipated, but in a very different way, but hugely rewarding.
Congrats on your success. You qualify and you finish. (I could never qualify and so cannot run next year.) Most impressive video. Few queries: a) if you run without phone then the digital key would be hard to use. How would one get in the hotel? b) how many influencers get bib via brands? (Some of us cannot get in but some get in easy. Great you qualified.) c) adidas had evo at the expo. Did you try? Thoughts on new shoes like Puma elite 3? Happy with Edge? d) did you go for any shakeouts. Hope everyone knew your top channel. Thanks.
Rajkumar. Hello on another beautiful Boston morning. I contemplated not running with the phone. I bought another camera and was thinking of using it instead. I am glad I brought the phone. The Hotel gives people physical cards if they need them and I could have carried one in my hat, with my ID and Dude wipes. My hat has a zip compartment. I don't know how many influencers got bibs via brands. There was some controversy online. You can get in by using a travel operator, at least you can from overseas. There are also charity entries. I did not go to the Expo to see the Evo. Funnily enough a man ran by me in a pair. He was not going very fast, nor would I have if I was in them. I have not seen the Elite 3. I have enough shoes for the moment! Delighted with the Edge, Sky and Alphafly 3. I did not do any shakeouts. I loved the Boston 5k. The rest of the time I stayed put and made videos!
@@OldManRunner Much thanks. The Janji hat was a great tip. Will try it. And will definitely register for 5K and maybe half. Safe travels to Dublin. Thanks.
Hi there. I’m a new subscriber …64 year old nurse from Seattle and… a 4 time Boston Marathoner! Last in October 2021. Great city, hard course and wonderful people. Enjoyed hearing your experience. Bravo to you! What’s next?
P.S. Ireland is on my bucket list to visit❤
Hello Enid. Glad you enjoyed the video. My next marathon is the Midnight Marathon in Trømso in Norway in 9 weeks time. Really looking forward to it, as it will be a completely different experience. Last summer I did the Jack & Jill Marathon in North Bend, another great experience and I also go to catch up with some old friends in Seattle, and see the Mariners. If you come to Ireland and want to run anywhere let me know, happy to guide anyone around anytime! Well done on doing Boston 4 times! Great achievement
@@OldManRunner Thanks for the reply. My marathon days are over I'm afraid...can't do much better than Boston as a rookie runner and as I train like an animal when I'm doing a marathon, I just don't have the motivation any more. My work as a nurse (especially during Covid) has taken its toll :(
Very proud to have qualified and run Boston x4. Now half's for me.! Signed up for the Jack & Jill half in July so enjoyed your review...thanks and so noted :) Hope you come back to Seattle...the summer weather is beautiful. Let me know if you're here...running along the Lake Washington path is the best. Hope to get to Ireland...2 years til retirement!
Sorry to hear you got affected by Covid. I ran my first marathon, a virtual one during Covid. I wore a mask, swapping it out 4 times. I didn't really come near anyone as I ran in a large park, but I wanted to show support to the medical staff, including my sister, who had to wear one every day and bore the real risks. The tunnel in the Jack & Jill is such fun. Enjoy! If you get to ireland let me know. It has a great climate for running...
@@OldManRunner Good luck in your training. Be careful and smart. We’re not young chickens anymore😀
Great video. I did’nt need to carry a camera when you’ve done such a comprehensive review. Agree with it all, excellent event apart from the expo and the soulless overpriced fanfest. Question everyone has though….JetBlue business class does not give you lounge access? Wtf?!
I didn't mind the lack of lounge. Many of them are terrible and on the way back I enjoyed a few beers at the bar in Boston and JFK...
Did you bring any salt tablets with you? I find that makes a big difference, particularly if you're losing a lot of sweat and only replacing it with water.
Not this time. I had electrolytes in my gels. But I probably could have doubled up. Will do next time.
I want to get the CGM. Which one do you use? How accurate?
Video review hopefully next week. Ultrahuman M1. Uses the Abbott Free Libre sensor
Why were you thirsty all the time? How did you loose 3kg? How hot was it? Before going to Thailand I run with extra extra extra layers for 2 weeks to get used to the heat.
It was way hotter than my training. I heard a number of local runners discussing this also. Apparently 9% of runners ended up in the medical tent and 136 in hospital, over 900 did not finish. My start time was 10:50 so I ran over the midday peak. I typically lose 1kg per hour of summer running in Dublin. But do not feel thirsty or drink excessively. Having said all of that, I wouldn't change a thing
@@OldManRunner Go to Kenya for 3 weeks before a hot weather race or Thailand. Same effect 👍🏻. I grow up in Kenya but have not visited in 45 years.. I really want to do the 2 weeks high altitude training.. Maybe before Valencia?
Welcome in Saudi Arabia
Shame not everyone has the sentiment of I've run it before, let me let someone else have the opportunity to run Boston OR XYZ.
You stay on Irish time ? ...sounds terrible. Well done on ticking off Boston , good detailed review
It helps with getting the body in tune for the early journey to the marathon start and with all the eating and digestive stuff. Then when I fly back the time differential and jet lag doesn't kill me...flew last night and back at work today
👽👽👽👽IndyMini👽👽👽👽
Maybe it's me but the part before the race sounds like an administrative nightmare.. 😂
In theory yes. In practice the BAA deserve huge credit for making it all so very simple in practice.
Was it cold?
I wish!
Congratulaions! The Boston Marathon is my runningdream (that will never happen).
But can we talk about the view out of the hotel? Wow! The funny thing is - that container ship in the back is the Evergreen, who famously wrecked at and clogged the Suez Canal in 2021.
Thanks! I love ships, strolled down the quayside to have a look at it. Watched a few others loading and unloading, wondering where all the cargo was coming from and going to...
@@OldManRunner What amazes me is the sheer size of those things. In your video you could see an already big ship drive towards the bridge. But compare that with the Evergreen... Unbelievable how these things are able to float.
I know. I am lucky to have travelled from the UK to Malaysia by ship and back and forth and to Jamaica a couple of times, and two of my uncles were marine engineers...so yes the hotel was perfect for me...
No pressure cooker explosions this time? Ok I'm not interested then, hopefully they'll bring it back next year.
