This site is about Running Gear and Design. I am based in Dublin, Ireland, and the videos are generally filmed around the city.
The clue is in the title, I typically post videos that may be of interest to older runners, whose personal bests, like my own lie in the past, and avoiding injuries would be more relevant. I post videos every Thursday, with additional videos popped in between if I get time.
I write a James Joyce related website www.jj21k.com Discover Dublin by Reading and Running, and I have created a second CZcams channel jj21k where the running videos specifically relate to the works of James Joyce.

Thanks for the detailed video! What type of shoes should I wear on this route? Someone said the trail running shoes, but others said the normal running shoes.
I saw people in all sorts of shoes from carbon plate racers like Alphafly’s to a variety of trail shoes. You could pretty much run in anything with a flat bottom. What I mean by that is many plated shoes and most On-Running shoes have gaps/grooves in the base where gravel and small stones can get lodged. The North Face Vectiv Summit Pro that I ran in were perfect. A grippy outsole with medium lugs, not too heavy, ventilated, carbon plate, nice ride.
Was able to get a new AlphaFly 1 for $100, I will keep hunting for deals on the AF 1 as I do marathon training runs and will patiently wait for AF3 deals to come in the coming months
Great stories.... First trips to Jamaica: It is a unique experience. How many people have experience in crossing the Atlantic in a boat leaving aside the fact that you did that in a cargo ship more than once? Ryan Air: You are lucky that you were not arrested and interrogated when you were found on tarmac. Especially here in US, the airport security would care less if there were fire alarm.
I did wonder about what would happen if more people were out on the tarmac. I guess we would all be on the secure side having checked in and it’s the only practical option…I wonder if they ever do fire drills? Seems unlikely
You could not make it up 😁.. and I wave at him 🤣
Such a great video again. Thank you for this Barry!
What a great story Barry, really enjoyed that video!
Glad you enjoyed it Martin…hopefully another one in 10 weeks after the Dingle Marathon
Great video and stories. I had just as good a time as you in Tromso. Our chat really made the marathon fly by. Boo to "Bryanair" though 😀
That’s it so. We will have to make more stories!
Avoid Ryan Air at all cost... 🙂

What a recap! I just finished it after several sit-downs but it was worth it. Definitely a bucket list marathon to be run just for experience without worry of time. I experienced the midnight daylight in Alaska but not midnight sun. So, that would be something to try. Great collaboration and congratulations to Chris and to you Barry. Achieving the goal and bringing it to a successful finish is always relieving.
Thanks Tolunay. This will not be our last rodeo!
Woke up at 3am, couldn't sleep, watched your story and enjoyed immensely.😂
Cheers Alan! Wasn't sure if I would even post this...glad I did
Well done Barry. You look fantastic and I am still enjoying your content, thank you! Patrick
Thanks Patrick! Next stop Dingle in September...
Congrats Baz and Chris well done to the both of you
Cheers Mark. Trip of a lifetime!
Congratulations to you both on fantastic race and video. I'm so glad you had a great experience running with Chris and i agree it really is a different mind set required when guiding. It's not about you, its about making sure Chris is feeling safe. I 100% agree about the finish, it's a relief and a lot of joy to have completed your task. Completing my marathon with Chris is something i remember a lot more than many of my solo marathons. Yes' i've made mistakes running with Chris...take eye off the ball and then of course thats when the pot hole appears but he is still talking to me.
That's exactly it...such a memorable and enjoyable experience...
👏 Very well done the both of you. I saw this on Strava .. but waited for you to post until I put keys to board , I can't really come up with a superlative to match what you two did ( A challange for each of your own reasons) . The key element is you have appaired to have enjoy the event .. and at the end of the day that is what it is all about .
Thanks John! It was a joy from start to the finish...still buzzing after it...
Thank you so much for everything Barry. I had a fab weekend. The race, of course, was huge fun, but the rest of my time in Tromso with you was also extremely enjoyable. I am truly so, so grateful that you agreed to guide run for me in this race (no small task), and you looked after me from an accessibility needs perspective with great care and no fuss. As I said in the video - thank you, I literally couldn't have done it without you. Chapeau Barry, and on to the next adventure!
I had such good fun Chris. And it has renewed my longing to run more marathons...started planning for the Dingle Marathon in September already... will also be thinking of another run with you...somewhere with cheaper pints!
BRAVO Chris for your impressive performances!!! It's been fascinating listening to you talk about your adventures and sharing this one with you through Barry!! All the best for your next great adventure!! AND if you're ever up for a marathon here in France, Barry has my email so don't hesitate to contact me!!
@bev9708 thanks Bev. I love France and speak passable French, so I'd love to run a road marathon or half in France. I'm open to any suggestions please 😀
@@Chris_Baily Tell me what time of year suits you Chris and I'll be happy to offer some suggestions!!! One that comes to mind is the flattest marathon in all of France , Marathon Seine-Eure!! It's in October, when this year I shall be running the Boffi Fifty at the Festival des Templiers. Maybe Barry will be happy to accompany you in 2025 for the very famous Marathon de Médoc at Bordeaux, early September, where fancy dress is obligatory and you are expected to indulge in 23 glasses of the famed vintages along route!!😂
@bev9708 any time of year is good for me. I've already got my A race booked for October 2024, so don't want to do anything that would get in the way of that (it's a rare race where I'm doing it purely to try to put down a time). 23 glasses of wine might kill me (😀), but I'd be looking for any race that's interesting or fun rather than just fast. I'll ask Barry for your details so we can take our chat offline if that's OK with you?
"We're running the marathon tomorrow, this is our first ever run!"😂😂 That made me laugh!! We're gonna remember your marathons Barry by what you stop to buy to eat... I laughed out loud at the ice cream!!!! My last Paris marathon I was desperate for a cappuccino, I looked longingly at every single coffee shop we passed, so your Snickers ice cream is no doubt gonna make me so jealous during my next marathon!!😂😂 Huge CONGRATULATIONS to both of you!!!💪🏅🏃♂🏃🏅💪 What an experience!! Sooo, what's next Barry?? Hope to see you guiding Chris again one day, you two make a great pair!! Me I've got my Sri Chimney 50k in the Bois de Vincennes on Saturday, but since it's a little loop, we will want for nothing, they really take care of us the whole time!!
Best wishes for the 50k Bev! Maybe I will stop and have a pint during Dingle! Apparently that is a thing...It is in September and the first training is tonight...
@@OldManRunner 😂😂 Maybe you should come do the very famous Marathon du Médoc one year, Barry, at Bordeaux, where you are expected to indulge in 23 glasses of the famed vintages along route!!😂 The Marathon Grands Crus at Dijon and the Marathon du Cognac at Jarnac both offer tastings according to the local produce at each aid station😂
Same day as Dingle! Right, it's on the short list for 2025...
@@bev9708 I should try that one (Marathon du Médoc ) some day as it presents a special challenge beyond the marathon. I am not sure if I could run with 23 glasses of wine in the system. I would be hard for me to keep it straight but who knows. With so much alcohol it might have a turbo effect if one survives the dehydration.
@@bev9708 BTW, I saw you ran the 50K successfully. Congrats! 👏👏👏
Thank you for the review! I was really trying to understand the differences between the 5 and 10 lt versions, and the photos in the website are not enough. I already own a Salomon Adv Skin 5 but I rarely use the hydration pack at the back and end up running with three extra layers of black material on my back 🥵 will purchase the 5lt ON in white 🫠
Glad you enjoyed it!cI am just back from running the Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromsø, Norway and wore the ultra Vest.It worked perfectly, no chafing or issues of any kind...

Hi Barry, do you have any insight into whether the ON Lightweight Cap is better or worse than the ON Zero Cap in terms of sweat absorption and ventilation?
I don't have one and haven't seen one to hand, but I think I will get one. Frustratingly the weight for the cap is not listed. I asked On and got this from their Bot: It seems I don't have the specific weight details for the Zero Cap at the moment. However, I can assure you that it's designed to be incredibly lightweight, perfect for not slowing you down during your activities. If you need more precise details, feel free to reach out to our support team or check the product details on our website. Is there anything else you'd like to know about the Zero Cap or any other products? The wicking band looks about the same. The clasp is different and my guess is that they saved weight in the visor...will report back when I can get hold of one.
@@OldManRunner thanks! I reached out to ON to ask about how much each cap weighed since the website didn't list them. They just said the Zero Cap is lighter, although for all I know, it could be very close. As for which one is better for sweat absorption and ventilation, it's unclear, so maybe they're relatively the same. Exact response I got: "Thank you for reaching out to On with your inquiries about the Lightweight Cap and the Zero Cap. I'd be happy to provide you with the information you're seeking. Weight Comparison: Lightweight Cap: This cap is designed to be featherlight, providing excellent protection without adding extra weight. Zero Cap: As the name suggests, this cap is extremely light, offering a weightless, barely-there feel, making it the lighter of the two options. Ventilation and Sweat Absorption: Lightweight Cap: This cap features laser-cut ventilation to help you keep a cool head, making it an excellent choice for both ventilation and sweat absorption. The cap is made from tear-proof, fast-drying fabrics that provide high-performance protection in a breathable, quick-drying frame. Zero Cap: Constructed from recycled polyester, the Zero Cap is designed for sweat-wicking performance. It efficiently wicks away sweat to keep you dry from start to finish, making it ideal for intense activities where sweat management is crucial. Its lightweight construction ensures it won't slow you down. For low-key style and versatile use, the Lightweight Cap stands out with its advanced technology and breathable design. For a race-ready option that prioritizes sweat-wicking and minimal weight, the Zero Cap is the better choice."
@@MgytlFwY I will order one when I get home. I have the Lightweight Cap in Black and love it. Will report back when I get it
Great collaboration and I think it will be a great experience. Kudos to Chris not only for his achievements and especially for the positive change that he has achieved in NY and Tokyo organizations. He has opened the way for others. I will be eagerly waiting for the post-marathon recap!
Thanks Tolunay. We are both in good form and we head off in 6 hours and 6 minutes from now. All is pointing towards an unforgettable experience...
You will have a fantastic experience running with Chris. I guided Chris on a few races including the Boston marathon and have met many of the other guides who have guided him on his 6 star journey and all agreed it was so memorable and an honour to help.
Thanks! My only worry is letting him down, but have put the work in so it should be grand…and I know we will have a great time.
@@OldManRunner of course those thoughts came into my mind too but trust your training. negotiate a strategy that works for you both so you can concentrate on the enviroment without too much mental stress and its an enjoyable experience for you both an adapt if necessary. You've both done plenty of marathons so you know whats coming.
Chris is still alive after our morning shakedown run, so I take that as a good sign. Weather looks perfect for tomorrow so looking forward to the off!
Well, if you thought Barry could talk for Ireland, that Chris chap can surely rival him. Jeez that was a long watch. We need much less of Chris next time, as he's dragging the channel down 😉 😀 Seeiously, huge thanks to Barry for agreeing to guide run with me in Tromso. Incredible review !!
Glad you enjoyed it!
great review! do the side pockets reach around the other side? the clip-on pouch looks a bit awkward but, glad to hear it's come and doesn't jiggle. very torn between this and the Salomon adv skin 5. The ON vest looks so light but still a bit skeptical since they are not as known as much as Salomon in the hydration vest arena
The side pockets are not connected to the deep front pockets in front of the water flasks. This works well for me. They measure c. 150mm x 90mm, 6 inches x 3.5 inches and have a stretchy fabric outer and there is a pull cord to tighten them down. I think the Salomon has been on sale for a long time so deals are available online in various places so it is possible to get it for less money than the ON depending on what part of the world you are in. The zip on the credit card/key pocket is the only thing that let the ON vest down for me. But I will only be using the zipped pocket at the start of a run to put valuable in. The zip on the rear stuff sack has a robust zip with a fabric pull cord. Hope this helps...
Great experience 🎉
That's the plan! I have arrived in Trømso and it looks really beautiful this morning
Great collaboration and project, Barry! Fantastic.
Cheers Troy. Amazing to be in the Arctic Circle, looking forward to the off on Saturday night.
Best of Lucks!! May the Force be with You. What a race. Query: Like your On Vest review. For 5L, can one remove the back thrash-pocket to save weight? And the zip pocket on the top (one side) is it big enough for ID or credit card? Thanks!!!!
Rajkumar. the 10L comes with the removable stash pocket. I would use it for putting a rain jacket in or something like that. The trash pocket is really quite small and will only take a few gel wrappers. The zip pocket takes a credit card and keys
@@OldManRunnerMuch thanks!!!
No pressure cooker explosions this time? Ok I'm not interested then, hopefully they'll bring it back next year.
This is a nice one but a bit expensive. I have 2.5L and 5L AOINIJIE cheap vests that share a lot of the characteristics of your vest. 5L carries 2L bladder in the back and you can drop in 2x 500ml soft-flask bottles in the front bottles and additional gels and side pockets can hold iPhone and other stuff you want. They cost me $37 and $47 respectively on Amazon. I used to use them more often in 2021 and 2022. Now mostly relying on a single soft-flask on my long runs (with the ability to refill along the course or looping through my car to refill) I take the vests for longer trails however.
Thanks for the heads up Tolunay. I had a look at their website, lots of interesting running gear, and not expensive. I think my running partner will be wearing one...think he mentions in next weeks very long video...that I am finally finishing filming this morning...
Not in the market for a new vest (Still have my trusty harriers from the UK) , however it is good to know the size reference .. I would have thought you a large as you are well muscled .. so this being the case I shall look at the same sort of sizing if and when need to upgrade as the product looks a great piece of kit. Just careful with the loops .. have snapped many on other vest. I would be happy to use it for a 50 miler or less (trail run) as long as poles were not required. you could put most of the mandarory kit in the attached bag while keeping the battery , light etc closer to you on the inside pocket.
I am a bit on the stocky side. And yes the XL in the vest is a good idea. Was thinking the loops will wear first. Luckily there are some spare ones. I can always cannibalise some other vests I have around… if only I could pinch the zips with the strings attached…
My original vest was a Nathan Vapor Krar 4L which could mount 2 front soft flasks and a bladder. But I found the bladder was almost never used, and don't think I have even used a bladder in 3 years. My Nathan vest was starting to show it's age, so I went with a Compressport Ultrarun S Pack EVO 10. It's very light weight, has a great system for cinching down the vest and bottles. But it doesn't specifically hold a bladder, but you could throw one in if you wanted, with the 10L capacity. Ran my last 2 marathons in the Compressport vest self supported without issue.
I have an older Salomon 12L, but it is heavy. I bought a T-Shirt with some storage capacity from Compresssport last year. I liked it but it was so small I had to send it back. It seems like any companies who make gear for cycling/triathlons have completely different sizing. Even in XXL I struggle to get into cycling clothing and I am an M in other running companies clothing...Also have a stunning Castelli top in 2XL that I can only really squeeze into...
Very thorough review as always. The vest looks great, but the price puts me off buying it.
Well it was either Plan A, this. Or Plan B, stick my hydration bladder on the back of another runner and have a very long hose...!
@@OldManRunner I'm glad I'm not the other runner in plan B 😂
Ha, thought you might think that! I also have a Plan C...
My first thought was that this vest looks great, but then I remembered that I already owned two other hydration vests!
Ha! I now have four...oh hang on I have another lying around somewhere. This one and the Salonon Sense Pro 5 are the best so far...
Another quality ON product 💪 A helpful tip, my trail running friends tell me the trick to a sloshing water bladder, is to turn it upside down and suck excess air out before you put it back in (correct way around). All the best in 2 weeks time, Barry 💪👍🫶
Cheers Bartek! Cracking point about extracting the air...will give it a whirl. Preview video for the next marathon goes live in a week. It will be rather long...recording the last piece tomorrow and I think it is already 90 minutes or so long...
@@OldManRunner already looking forward to it 💪💪💪 ... love the extra length, podcast like, pre / post event @OldManRunner vlogs 🫶
Funnily enough it really is like a podcast, particularly in the second half...anyway all will be revealed next week. Hope you enjoy it!
For long trail runs up to 100K, a vest is invaluable.
I keep promising myself that I will run an Ultra of some description...this will be the vest I bring...
@@OldManRunner nice
Superb video with lots of valuable data. Will check On vest. Use Patagonia Slope Runner Vest (red) now. Query: What’s your strategy in water in bottle (how much you fill, how long you keep in fridge before the run, etc.). Thanks!!!
I use 1litre per hour of water on a long run. The marathon will be at a stable temperature and not too warm c.11C/59F. I am a light sipper usually, apart from this years Boston! I will use a maximum of 2 litres and there are water points along the way if needs be. I will put the gels in a fridge if I can find one in the hotel, but keep the water at room temperature. It will heat up on my back I guess. Will report back in a review video in a couple of weeks..
@@OldManRunner Best of Lucks!!! Thanks much for the tips on water & gel. Not know if you still looking for the kit to go with the On vest. Maybe Soar’s new trail race top could be possibility. There is also a new cap in light blue or sky blue that might be great. Can’t wait for your pre-race video. Thanks!!!!

Watching this video with some delay but as always I have enjoyed the content. I personally do not like very high stack shoes on the track. The track surface is also providing some bounce and combination is not always nice for me. For that reason, for my track workouts, I choose slightly firmer and lower stack shoes. Brooks Hyperion Tempo and Adidas Takumi Sen 8 are typically my go to shoes on the track at the moment. 5 years ago they were not exactly low stack shoes but by today's standards they are.
Hi Thanks for video - liked to order alphafly 3 shoe. Have now the Nike Next % 2 in size 11. And then have also the streakfly in size 10.5. The streakfly in 11 was to big so went with 10.5 and fits good. Thinking to order the alphafly 3 in 10.5. How are your sizes for 2 shoes - same or different? Hearing the alphafly is slipper like so maybe good. I find many nike when lace down they get a lot of bunching of top material. Thanks any help for me with sizing.
I always buy the same size in shoes. I think I have a wide foot and am more sensitive to with than length. The Alphafly 3 is tight around the ankle and takes some wriggling to get into. Once on it is great. Funnily enough the Streakfly is the easiest shoe I’ve ever tried to put on…
@@OldManRunner thanks for fast reply back. Too reading that moving up in only 1/2 size can add much more weight than one really thinks about. So for fast times much better in the smaller size. Common sense but sometimes i forgot this so overlook this in sizing.
Really interesting analysis. I know I TRY to not compare Stryd between different shoes (too many variables), but find it very informative when plotted for the same pair of shoes overtime. I suspect this might be why you went with pace over power as the metric for this test. Still not sold on the Stryd Duo setup (for me), maybe eventually they will be able to drag out more value with software updates. If I was struggling with left/right leg issues I'd have already switched to the Duo. But after over a year working at a standing desk, it seems to have really balanced out my legs.
It is really difficult to narrow down the variables. There is a lot of wind in Dublin as it is beside the sea and there was a headwind on one straight on the track and then a tailwind on the other. I find it easier to run to a pace rather than a power in that situation. I was hoping for a little more with the Duo. Oddly the metrics don't indicate the stride length. A bigger issue for me is the tiny size of the map makes it really difficult to segment out the metrics for bends v straights...nearly bought a standing desk lst year, still on the to do list...
Class, what track are you running on? :)
That would be the right track! Irishtown Stadium. €5.50 for a session.
@@OldManRunner Might have to join you for a run there at some stage uncle
@@jacksheehan8014 Excellent Plan!
