- This video is all about the newest guidelines on how to effectively treat a clogged milk duct and start making your breasts feel better sooner. I outline what a clogged milk duct might feel like and of course the difference between a clogged milk duct and mastitis!
There used to be old guidelines and they said to treat a clogged milk duct you should:
- apply heat
- vigorously massage the breast
- pump your breasts or feed your baby more often
But these guidelines are outdated because we now know that a clogged milk duct is actually narrowing and inflammation of the milk duct and the surrounding tissue! So lets go over the new guidelines such as:
- applying ice to the breast
- breast rest
-Ibuprofen and or Acetaminophen for pain relief
- Avoiding excessive breast pump use
I also talk about a few more things within the new guidlines which were set out by the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine in 2022, which can be found here:

Clogged milk ducts can be pretty painful and can sometimes really derail your breastfeeding journey. Make sure you are up to date on what to expect, what to do to make your breast feel better faster and how to try to avoid a clogged milk duct in the future!

Eyeopener video! We were going all the way wrong with the old school recommendations. Will try these and hoping it works.
I've just found your channel and love it! Thank you so much for the clear and informative videos and great content â€
Thank you so much for this info! I was doing all the old methods and will now do the new recommendations, the ice is helping!
Did the new method help?
LOVE this info!
So cool to see my comment at the beginning of the video đ„° I definitely can testify to iced and resting the breast along with ibuprofen and Tylenol!! I also take sunflower lecithin daily (recommended by my ob) â€â€â€ love you videos
Thanks for being here!
I actually did have a physical clog that turned into a galactocele. Once my breast was cut open and pressure relieved of all the backed up milk, the doctor worked out of my nipple what looked like a tube of gooey snot.
I just had my second daughter and I have had many clogs since Iâve had her. Itâs gotten much better over time! Would love to see you talk about the milk ducts in your armpits because I leaked milk out of my armpit and it was the scariest thing đ. Thank you for your informative videos love all that you do keep it up!
What?? You leaked from there? Gosh I would be scared too! đ€Ł Thanks for being here!
Yeah I had to look into it because I was so concerned that something was very wrong however I found out that it is a thing that happens and nothing bad can come from it đđ
â@@knoxy9851really interesting! Glad all is good â€
I got a clogged duct 2 weeks after i had fully weaned my baby (did this gradually). Do i express to get the milk out that caused the clot after icing? Since im not nursing anymore or just leave it
Iâm working with an IBCLC to to figure out why Iâm struggling with recurrent clogged ducts. This article recommended avoiding silicone breast pump use, would silicone flange inserts have the same effect? Thank you for this information! I love your videos đ
I dont think they would because they aren't actually applying the suction. My understanding is that the issue with the silicone pumps for clogged duct relief is its actually applying suction which can aggravate the inflammation and also could technically increase your supply if theres enough suction on there for long enough. The sillicone inserts are imprtant so the breast pump you are using is being effective!
Can i please have the Epsom salt/haaka salution?
Hi mam
Thanks for your video , can you please tell me does sunflower lecithin supplements decrease milk flow ?
I had the most giant clog the other day and heat and dangle pumping relieved it.
I actually like the Epsom salt Haaka trick which I guess is not recommended anymore either
Iâve had tooooooons of people swear by it. Thatâs why it surprised me!
Out of curiosity have you had women who had their nipples pierced and if so did it affect the way they were able to breastfeed??
I'm not a Mom but I'm curious, how long should a Mom give her breast a rest?
i listened twice and i only heard what not to do and cold compress & ibuprofen,, so no other solutions?
When you doing your Cheryl Cole dilation stuff you need to not use two fingers on anything because it just looks like Fusina meters to centimeters
I dont actually understand what you mean here
Cabbage helps me with clogs. I'm someone who gets more clogs every day. I'm working on decreasing my milk now, and I'm going to have to switch to formula. :(
What do you do with the cabbage
@kesiajacobs9174 I lay the leaves on my breasts and put a small towel over the top of them. If you are comfortable in a bra, you could stick them in a bra. A lactation consultant said I could freeze the leaves, but I don't think that's necessary. Some chemicals in the leaves help. I tear them and snap the stems to make them lay as flat as possible. Some stuff says to switch them out every (some amount of hours) I use the same leaves all night.
I've gone through a lot of cabbages. I think the light green leaves work the best, but I use all of them I can until they get too hard to lay flat or too small. (I fit them together like a puzzle until they get really small) Sometimes they are really hard to get off of the cabbage. It's a gamble picking the cabbage. I think big ones that feel lighter might be the best. I try not to get moldy ones. If the leaves are dirty, I'll rinse them in cold water before using them. If you have any other questions let me know.
Amazon has some cream or something made of cabbage. I have not tried that.
Cabbage could decrease your supply depending on what you read. You may want to ask your lactaion consultant if that's a concern.
Cabbage, ice, rest, ibuprofen, sunflower Lecithin, try to reduce stress, a pool or tub or something with jets that you can stand in front of helps too.
Good luck.
Omg Iâm doing all wrong stuff now Iâm in pain đą
Can you breastfeed while taking antibiotics?
Very likely ok but always best to check in with your provider!!
I am on day 3 of a clog and my baby is getting hungry and she forgot how to latch to a bottle. :( Sometimes I cannot let down at all on that side. Half the milk supply is not gonna cut it
Nvm, THE ICE WORKED!! This is the first time I tried REALLY icing it, making sure it got good and cold for 15-20 mins (I'm chronically cold so I really didn't wanna do it). And I was just sitting here watching these videos while my baby's sleep-nursing, I felt a slight pinching at my nipple followed by a flood!!! Thank God. What a shame it took them all these years to figure out this protocol!!! Thank you for bringing it to us. đ
I just saw this and was about to respond!!! Iâm so glad something worked!
Perhaps because of a prior injury and resulting scar tissue, I experienced a high recurrence of a plugged duct with my first. I saw lactation consultants and specialists, did a ton of research, attended LLL, and saw a naturopath. I did hot baths and compresses which were soothing. I tried nursing the baby in a bath, frequent nursing with massage, same sided nursing (on the affected side), loose clothing, nursing position changes (including having baby's chin closest to the plug - which I think was helpful), used gravity (nursing on all fours), gentle directed massage while nursing (which I think helped), caster oil packs, ultrasound treatment (did nothing), deep tissue massage (was excruciating and not helpful), and more. It was even suggested that I become a one-sided nurser. The swollen duct looked like a pencil shape just under my skin from the top of my breast right down to the areola. I could often see crystals formed at the opening of the duct on the end of my nipple. When that was the case, I could gently use a needle to move the plug away - no poking, just nudging. This was the most helpful of all. Eventually it resolved and I went on to nurse for an extended period, and had no troubles with my second.
Ultrasound made mine worse. That physical therapist really pressed on them afterwards though.
So, you were able to keep going? Did anything change that fixed it? I've been told to stop from a LC.
I didn't want to stop and was really glad I persevered. I had a plug about every two or three weeks in the first year and it was a pain. When it was over I nursed for a long time after and again with my second and had no more problems. @@AngelasLifeAdventures
Mines is so painful an is duct is swollen no milk is coming out help
What did you do to help it
Mine haven't stopped producing but never made enough to fill a whole bottle, its been 8 years n no dr will listen or help, why am i still making milk,if i domt express it gets so uncomfortable n painful in so many ways,im un able to wesr bras and every other thing sets em off. Help đą
Oh my goodness. Itâs likey expressing it thatâs triggering you to make more but thatâs such a long time! The only expressing JUST what you need to feel comfortable and not any more. And do hand expression not electric pump. Iâm sorry no one is listening to you or helping!
My mom's friend said they gave her a shot to stop producing. That was probably 40 or 50 years ago. I've never heard about it from anyone these days. I wonder if it's still available.
This have never happened to me .
This happens to me on average every week.
@@monika-1315 Iâm so sorry I hope this tips help .
That's great news for anyone breastfeeding! They aren't fun at all!
@@monika-1315 Arg I'm sorry, that sucks. Is there anything you do that always works best?
