  • Some prophetic warnings from Jordan Peterson -- from before he became a public figure.
The video is distilled from "2014 Personality Lecture 13: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (Existentialism)". It also includes excerpts from a 2016 conversation between Dr. Peterson and Dr. Gaad Saad. (See links to the original videos below.)
(Want an uplifting challenge? Add a comment with the sentence that Jordan is saying at the moment where the thumbnail is taken from. Good luck!)
This is a summary which I created for my own use many years ago, when Dr. Peterson was still active at University of Toronto. It seems proper to share it publicly at this time in late 2023.
I've studied the lecture by Dr. Peterson several times, and I consistently come away with both a deep appreciation for the positive capabilities of our minds as humans (creative, constructive, and compassionate), as well as respect for the destructive forces that can be unleashed when we lack an adequate sense of groundedness -- or as Jordan might say, "truth".
Note: After watching this, I recommend you also watch a seven-minute segment of a presentation by psychiatrist Dan Siegel, M.D. at the Wisdom 2.0 conference in 2017, where he shared a powerfully moving experience he had while in Namibia. He pleads with us to honor our natural human drive to belong. That clip is in in my video honoring Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, the creator of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). The segment with Dr. Siegel begins at 42 mins. Here's a direct link:

The excerpts here are not necessarily in the order of the lecture. I included a timestamp for each change of "scene" to correlate the excerpt with the original. Some of the clips in the first six minutes also appear again later, in their larger context. This is intentional. The first few minutes is intended to help set the tone for the rest of the material.
My goal here is to thread a pathway through this dense and important information, and to have it flow like a narrative. In doing this project, I listened to the lecture many times, making notes about what seemed to be representative elements of several imperatives that invite or demand deep thought.
I began studying the Personality Lecture series in 2015, before Jordan became a public figure.
When the initial controversy regarding Bill C-16 erupted in 2016, I took an interest in how Jordan chose to take his convictions beyond the lecture hall. During that time, when he and Gaad Saad had their first conversation, Jordan summarized his book "Maps of Meaning" in what seemed a superb way. I saw an opportunity to weave some excerpts from that conversation into this video.
Overall, I hope this project does justice to Dr. Peterson's thinking on Totalitarianism in the 20th Century from the perspective of Existentialism and Phenomenology. I also hope it inspires more of us to consider these vitally important topics as we go about our daily lives within our families, and in our businesses and communities.
    Respectfully,
    Richard Tashma
