Recommended Parts:
New GM Manifold Gaskets - you can include these with your order from speed engineering www.speed-engineering.com/sho...
Quality header bolts (such as ARP 434-1202)
(4x) Quality exhaust clamps - I used “Roadformer 3" Lap Joint Exhaust Band Clamp”. I do not recommend using the included clamps.
Penetrating oil such as Aerokroil or PB Blaster (and a pistol grip!)
Manifold bolt fix it kralautoparts.com/product/exh... If the price doesn’t bother you, it might be a good idea to have one or two of these on hand before you start so you don’t have to wait on shipping to finish your project.
Hardware for cat-back connection (bolts, washers, lock nuts)
Oxygen sensor wrench/socket (optional) - You can also make your own out of a 22mm socket
Replacement Upstream Oxygen sensors (optional) - Denso 234-4650 or AC Delco 213-1527 (I was told these are the same physical part with different branding)
Downstream oxygen sensors may also need to be replaced if you are keeping cats. Downstream sensors use the same part number as upstream (listed above). If eliminating downstream sensors, PCM tuning or sims will be required to clear the SES light.
99 to 02 Silverados are my most favourite! I used to have a 2001 Silverado 1500 LT Extended Cab that my Grandpa gave me in 2014. Had it for a year because my friend crashed it. Beautiful truck dude!
Thank you!
On a totally different topic, I love those rims.
What wheels are they?

Nice job on the manifold bolt extraction. Those headers are perfect for that truck. I've got the same ones and love um. Real cool truck!
Appreciate it man! I agree they made it more fun to drive.
Doesn’t sound too loud at all, sounds great. Beautiful truck too. I’m looking at getting these headers for my 2011 5.3 and pairing with a Flowmaster Super 10.
The longer I've left it like this the more its been growing on me. Super 10s sound nice!
why flowmaster smh
@@mondo9.2.5 I haven’t ordered any headers as of yet. I’ve had true duals with 8” glasspacks for almost 4 years now, looking for a different sound and Flowmaster has always been my go to when I use a muffler in my setups.
@@KsKaylor ahh i see
great looking truck! Just ordered a set for my 04 SS truck
Thanks! You'll like them!
Make sure you change the engine mounts. Ppl have had issues with them hitting the front driveshaft.
@@BadReligionQL I haven't had any issues yet but that's good to know thanks! This truck only has 125k miles on it, most of them very easy. I'll change them out when i do a 6.0 swap :-)
Great video man! 👍🏾
Thank you!
Best video out there on long tube headers
Appreciate that!
Excellent video and well documented! The only video that says "header install" that actually shows installing the headers and not just a before and after video. You have a link to the exact clamps you used connecting the Y pipes?
Thanks! They were mentioned in notes the exact link is: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07646MJNL/
May have skipped the part ,but what did u do to eliminate the catlk converters? One more question does the header kit come readily available to where your original 02 sensors can bolt into the side of the piping? Thanks
To be honest I still have the check engine light on for the cats because I plan on changing up the driveline and just don't feel like bothering with it now, but the fix is to disable it in the tune. The y-pipe has bungs for 3 oxgen sensors IIRC. two for the upstreams and one for a wide-band. None for cat monitors. I'm planning to run a single cat after the y-pipe because when I'm towing it gets pretty loud in the cab.
Sounds great from out here 😀😀😀😀
Great video. I have 2003. Thinking of doing same. New subscriber. Thanks.
I'm thinking about doing this to my truck. So would you spray some type of penetrant before attempting to break loose the manifold bolts. And would you some anti-sieze when reinstalling.
Yep I did both. I sprayed the original bolts with penetrating oil 2 or 3 times a week or two before i started, and a little anti-seize on the header bolts.
On the driver side, did you also put the new headers in from the bottom? I just don’t see how you’d do that with the front driveshaft still in there.
That ticking sound you hear has been in mind since it was brand spanking new don’t really know what it is but when it’s cold it rattles when is warm it settles down was been doing that every sense 0 miles
I have a 2005 z71 single cab z71 5.3 only have a Cold Air Intake if I add long tube headers will I need a tune ?
Okay so I just did the same headers install and welded in rear o2 bungs any codes for you
Ive got 1 broken on driver side and 2 on passenger decided to just upgrade the entire exhaust including manifold with headers did you have to(is it necessary) jack the truck to remove cross member or can i just slip under and unfasten to swap in The Y Pipe?
You have to drop the front crossmember, yes. But its pretty simple. Truck can be on the ground, and then you just lower it to the point that the driveline rests on the other crossmember behind it, i show the process in the video.
Hey man, I got the same headers from an exhaust shop, and I have a single cab 5.3 of the same year, did you have any problems fitting the headers through the frame of the truck?
Hopefully you're not putting your headers through your frame... That's not healthy for frame stability.
I am atm on passenger side only how did you do it
how do these headers compare to the texas speed
did the crossmember bolt back in after the ypipe was installed
What does it smell like without cats? Also what does that bracket do on the driver side, ive never seen that or heard of someone doing that. Im planning to do it in april, i already have my hesders and x pipe, so im getting ready! Also did you tune it after the headers or did you just keep it going on the stock tune
The smell doesn't seem bad but it'll stick to your clothes and get annoying. IMO they're are "off-road" pipes for a reason and I personally don't think using a single high-flow cat after the y-pipe is going to restrict anything. I never tuned my truck because my trans has been dying this entire time and i didn't want to put any more stress on it. The new trans should be going in this summer and it'll get tuned then.
Any steering column clearance issues, like did it fit perfect ?
None. I was shocked I didn't need to remove it for the install. Same for the front driveshaft. The headers dropped in with everything in place.
Do you need to get a tune if you install these?
Did u had clearance issues on driver side or passenger side hitting chasis or steering wheel shaft I'm planning to buy speed engineering headers
will these cause heat issues should i wrap them or dont need to ?
I’m thinking about getting this on my 99 Silverado do I need the Y pipe kit?
Do these throw a check engine? There are 4 o2 sensors on my truck (stock) and 2 cats. The speed engineering long tubes I bought have 3 o2 sensor inserts. 1 on each header and one on the y pipe. Where did you route your left out o2 sensor aswell as did you plug anything into the y pipe?
The SE y-pipe is an off-road pipe, meaning no cats no monitors unless you make your own modifications to keep them. The third port is intended for a wideband for custom air/fuel tuning.
Great video thanks for sharing! Installed a cat back to eliminate a leak and of course, sealing that up I discovered a manifold leak. one bolt already broken from looking at it, so very nervous about doing this myself lol would it be worth replacing gasket on the factory, or just go ahead and get a new manifold header so when my mechanic is in there it is all done (while you are in there type attitude you know). Figure the labor cost will be the same regardless lol
Ultimately thats up to you, fixing the broken bolt is the same effort, but you’d have more cost/effort adapting the headers to the rest of the exhaust. Since i made this video I’ve been seeing the speed engineering y-pipes out of stock a lot, so if that’s not available the shop may need to fabricate one.
A little louder than I'm looking for but still sounds great. Definitely need a cold air intake lol. I have a 01 z71 off-road same color as yours but my clear coat on the hood and roof is starting to come off.
Do you have to get a tune if you put long tube headers
Did you ever install a cam on the Silverado?
On the passenger side what block off plates did you use or what did you do with the Egr hose that connects to the stock headers and the line that goes to the tb?
Wish i could be more help here but my truck was factory non-EGR. You migh be able to get the stuff you need from a non-EGR truck in the junkyard.
Any issues with not using the down stream 02 sensors
Do they have the rear O2 bungs? I have the spacers to turn off the check engine light and don't feel like getting them tuned out
There is ONE additional bung in the y-pipe for a wide-band sensor. Even if there were two though, you would still get a CEL when the rear sensors detected the cats aren't working.
No matter what spacer you put check engine lights never go off buddy .i did on my also i put 2 spacer in each o2 sensor
Did you have a problem installing the passenger side o2? My bung is facing the frame and not that much space to install
It's a tight fit but I didn't have any problems. the brand of O2 sensor might make a difference.
Is there plenty of room for the transmission pan?
What other upgrades did you do on your truck
Trying to do this right now do you leave the headers loose from the block while you are trying to install the y pipe and rest of the connection pieces
I did not but that would help. I kept all the clamps and pieces of the y-pipe loose until things were lined up right.
Did you use any heat wrap on any of the trans lines or the plug wires? I’m concerned about my trans fluid temp and I’m wondering if you had any issues
I did not, no issues at all. Ive done hillclimbs at the sand dunes with it too at 5k rpm where the headers would be good and hot. Heatwrap might still be a good idea though!
@@whynotmotoring thanks man I just picked up a 03 z71 and I’m trying to get it on the road and I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to screw anything else up thanks for getting back to me!
By anychange you think you can give me the website to the axact iteam of where you got the longtube headers & the Y pipe together i cant seem to find them together im sure the one you got would workin for my 5.3
Directly from speed engineering's website. The package is listed there for $389, I just verified.
Would u have to cut with the 1 7/8
Is it possible to run cats with the same headers and kit you got on? Bc I have the same kit but I wanna run the cats!
I believe a skilled tig welder could make dual cats fit in the y-pipe but it would be a project, likely requiring a couple removal/reinstalls of the y-pipe. I decided it's probably not worth the effort, so my plan is run a single cat after the y-pipe which I think will still flow plenty, and if not I'll have a cutout ahead of it to bypass it if i need to.
What was involved in actually placing the passenger side on the vehicle? Any special notes? Same truck in my driveway. Needs the same treatment.
I didn't shortcut the footage, so for me it was exactly what was shown. Some people have had issues with the passenger oxygen sensor fitting. It was close for me but I had no issue, I speculate the specific oxygen sensor you have can make a difference for that. I listed the ones I used but there are many compatible part numbers. Worn out motor mounts can also move things around.
How did you get the number 7 bolt out of the head, or did you?
I didn't. I successfully got 1 and 8 out, but #7 was broken too deep in the cylinder head for the tools i had. I used the clamp fix as shown in the video.
How you get the passenger side o2 in? Mine is like right up against the frame
It barely fit but it went in without issue. Maybe the brand of oxygen sensor matters here?
What was part number for headers with y pipe. have the same truck and the headers we got don't fit.
You may want to validate that your motor mounts aren't worn/sagged. That has been known to cause fitment issues. I don't have a part number but here is the link: www.speed-engineering.com/shop-by-vehicle/1999-13-lsx-trucks/exhaust/headers/speed-engineering-truck-suv-longtube-headers-y-pipe-1999-2006.html
Did the headers bolt up to the factory exhayst system Or did u have to do any cutting?
Bolted up to the existing catback flange
Would u be able to send me the website where you got these from want to get for chevy avalanche
Do u have a link for the headers
did your bolt pattern on the headers match up well?? im on my second set of headers, different brand, and neither of them line up well with my heads.
Thats definitely a brand specific issue, mine matched up fine
@@whynotmotoring got the job done tho bro. no biggie. lol
Did you have to replace the spark plug wires ?
I'm using stock AC delco plug wires. Definitely recommend keeping the metal heat shields with them though, I've noticed a lot of people seem to throw them away.
Did you use the gasket from speed engineering? Also what bolts did you go with after that one stripped the head?
GM gaskets and ARP header bolts. Also used better exhaust clamps than what is supplied.
So should I get 1-7/8 long tube headers instead of 1-3/4 for my 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 6.0?
If you plan on modding it more down the road, then definitely yes. For a stock 6.0 I don't think you can go wrong with either size. I have seen dynos showing more favorable numbers on the big end with 1 7/8, but most dyno runs don't start at a low enough RPM to show where the 1 3/4 might be a little better for real world use. With either one its going to run noticeably better than stock.
@@whynotmotoring ok thanks for your help much appreciated I’ll probably end up going with the 1-3/4 because I don’t plan on putting a cam. If I was to do a cam then I would get 1-7/8.
What size tires you running with the leveling kit ??
285/70/17 on 17x9s
Can you tell me what time and tire size is? Any lift or leveling kit installed?
tires are 285/70/17. It is slightly lifted with keys and an add-a-leaf in the rear.
How u passed ur inspection with out cats ??
Glad to see these fit a 4x4 good. I have a 2000 Z71 with a level (torsions cranked up a bit in front) suspension. I am about to order these headers and y-pipe but the y-pipe is on back order. I live in UT but from MI and keep my truck registered in MI so no need to have cats. I already have the cats off on my stock y-pipe but one clogged and blew a chunk out of my passenger side manifold so I have a hellacious exhaust leak and an O2 code since it's not getting a good reading on the passenger sensor. I tow with my truck. I'm hoping these headers won't cause the truck to lose torque down low. I do have 4.10's in mine so it tows pretty good. What's up with your Security light staying on?
If you need to get your truck tuned I know a guy in Michigan who has tuned a lot of these trucks and he is really affordable.
Hey man! I think you will be very happy with the headers for towing, I am still on the stock tune and if anything I think they increased the low end grunt and snap to the throttle. Like I said in the video though it DID take some time for The PCM to learn though, for at least the first 50 miles the low end torque was terrible... couldn't even maintain highway speed. but it eventually found itself and started running great. The security light is VATS. It failed on this truck and I had it disabled with HPtuners but for some reason (maybe because I disconnected the battery?) the light came back on when I was filming the video. It hasn't been back since. Youre lucky to have a truck with 4.10s I think they all should have come that way. I have 3.73s and plan on switching to 4.56 soon. Who do you know that does the tuning? I am probably going to do the tuning myself but always good to have another contact. Thanks!

@@whynotmotoring got all the parts finally from back order. Plus ARP bolts and Mahle MLS gaskets. Tried to install today. Can't get the manifold stud nuts loose with hand tools even with a short 1/2" breaker bar. I tried to remove the 2 bolts at the exhaust flange near the torsion bar brace. I snapped one off on the inside (no big deal) but the other one I can only get a stubby ratchet to fit by going over the top of the pipe and there's no leverage. Going to have to wait til I get a new compressor (burned up my 15 year old one recently) so I can use an impact or find a friend with a lift and air tools that will help me.
I have a catless y-pipe on there now so I'm trying to remove it intact so I can sell it but I might say fuck it and just get the sawzall out and cut it in pieces so I can get the pipes off.
Wat wheels n tires size r those?
What did you do for your Egr valve? Is it deleted or relocated
Some of these trucks had no EGR from the factory, mine was one of them.
We didn’t see you actually put the headers on. Like did you install from too or bottom ?
passanger side came from bottom up but i’m curious on the drivers side as well which is easier, i got my old headers out today wanna install the new ones soon. wondering which is easier, if going from top down or bottom up on the drivers side
Do these pass smog? Aswell as does it throw a check engine light?
I don’t believe any longtube header will pass smog due to relocating cats. That being said, if you use catalytic converters with longtubes I’m willing to bet the truck would still easily pass a tailpipe sniff test, which in my opinion is all they should care about.
Hey can you send me the link to headers with y pipe I only see the headers no y pipe included
I am getting this question a lot, I am wondering if their website is filtering options out based on local laws?

Did you lose any power in any of the rpm range?
The lower RPMs are debatable but my impression is that it was all gains. Throttle response is better at all rpm.
I put the 1 7/8 headers with their td exhaust system on my 03 2500hd.....vid is on my channel. I wonder how the 1 3/4 perform vs the 1 7/8?? Ever see any testing?
I've seen some testing. On a fairly well built 6.2 the 1 7/8 headders loose some low end to gain some top end. On smaller engines or not modified you'd probably loose power everywhere compared to 1 3/4.
@@thomasgoddard5503 I've seen it go both ways on chassis dyno testing. But a full exhaust system could also have a drastic effect on it. Richard holdener just tested it and it ended up being how you said tho. Maybe I'll just buy a set of 1 3/4 and try is myself.
Are u thinking of putting an after market intake??
Yeah, I did install one after I made this video but I'll be honest it didn't really change anything. The stock airbox seems to flow enough for a stock 5.3.
I got to ask what lift/level do you have and what rims and tire size? I have to the same blue color without the two tone and its hard to pick rims for it.
I have rough country leveling keys in the front with spindle source UCAs. They're adjusted about a half inch higher than the stock keys would go. The rear has an add-a-leaf but that had too much rake so i replaced the stock 2" block with a 1" block. Wheels are 17x9 Pro Comp 069s with 285/70/r17 tires.
@@whynotmotoring Cool I have the rough country leveling kit and I am getting 17x9s 285/70/r17 also should be installing that this week I think your truck looks great the way it is! I see you control arms you got what do you think of those vs the freedom off-road ones?
@@Belowtheprairie I had no idea the freedom off-road UCAs existed but they look like an excellent product, perhaps better than the Spindle Source pieces I have. The main thing is that they correct the ball joint angle which they claim it does. The stock ones ride like a lumber wagon when cranked.
@@whynotmotoring @Why Not Motoring I think im going to go with the spindle source, you can get MOG ball joints on there UCA they look beefier and you haven't had a problem plus they are cheaper, only negative is that I will most likely have to cut off the brake line bracket.
@@Belowtheprairie Yeah the brake line bracket was poorly placed but a wheel with the right backspace/offset should clear it. I got the standard ball joints on mine and they have been fine, greasable too. You might want to ask them if the optional MOOG ball joint measures out the same. The reason those arms help is because the ball joint itself is taller, and therefore props the arm up to a better operating angle. Good luck!
Nice video. Do you have a muffler on it? Also did you gain any power?
Thank you! I have a dynomax 3” catback which uses a straight through muffler. I don’t have any proof but I think it did gain some pretty good top end power. It likes high rpm. Low end feels the same with crisper throttle response.
125k miles? That things fuckin brand new.
These fuckin trucks go 300k miles all day, they refuse to fuckin die.
Did you end up getting an actual tune?
Still the stock tune, no complaints it runs strong. But I will be tuning it this year because I've got other projects coming up soon that will require it.
Where did you get your bed cover ?
It’s an Amazon special, I think Tyger was the name. It’s been good.
How long would you say it took you to install?
Took me a full weekend but easily half of that time was spent on the filming and not the actual wrenching.
Dude . Whats up with the helicopter sounds in the vid? Lol. And i can tell your a fan of Scotty Kilmer; due too your opening track. 👍
Old camera, bad mic. Replaced it but no easy way to fix old footage.
Do a drive by sound test
I’m still trying to learn all the GM truck lingo, but isn’t your ‘02 a GMT 400? 1988-1998 is the OBS everyone loves and the newer ones 2008-2014 are the GMT 800.
GMT400 is the internal code for the 1988-1998, OBS “old body style” is the colloquial term. His truck is a GMT800 which is 1999-2006.
Planning to do this on my 02 silverado but I have a question, how do you eliminate the egr codes and o2 sensors
If you are eliminating any of that it has to be done with custom tuning. Frankly I like to eliminate the cat monitors in the tune even when I am keeping cats. I believe they also sell eliminators you plug in in-place of the sensors, which trick the PCM into thinking the cat monitors are working, but I have never used those.
Approximately how long did this take ?
I spread it out over a weekend. Took my time and that included the overhead of setting up & running cameras. Could be done much faster than i did it.
U need to put a egr plug in the intake
If your truck has EGR you will need to cap it yes. My truck came from the factory without EGR so it was already capped.
@@whynotmotoring it looked like it was open.
May be a dumb question but did you have a hard time getting the passenger side front o2 in
I didn't have any issues with the oxygen sensors. What's going on with yours?
I just ordered those, wheels bud lol, can you tell me the tires and size also please
Nice! 285/70/17
So does it make a big difference?
Its a noticeable difference. If you're expecting major gains though headers aren't going to do it, I'd suggest boost.
It looks like your driver side rear wheel is too close to your fender. Might need to make some adjustments to your rear end
Tires are about flush with the fender flares. Ive taken it on the sand dunes multiple times and there's never been any contact yet.
It’s a 2002 also and it’s got 145,900 this time
Did you end up throwing a cat in? Planning on doing this to my Yukon
If you do a cam look at the summit racing torque mpg nsr cam and a tune
I assume you must be talking about the sum-8718? I wasn't aware of that one, but that's a good recommendation based on the specs and reviews. Thanks!
I have tuned 2 Tahoe's with this cam and part throttle performance is impressive. Make the truck feel like it a bigger motor because of the low rpm torque. My truck has a btr stage1 truck cam and the mpg cam is better below 4000. But after that the bigger cams shine. For a bigger cam you really Need a converter. I am a gm engine plant cylinder head machining team leader. Look into this cam more if you want more part throttle performance.
@@mauricedavis2905 WHich cam do you prefer the summit or the BTR? My plan was to 6.0 swap it and follow the Richard Holdener truck recipe which is 5.3 heads and a 212/218 cam (BTR stage 2 i think). But that being said even if i do 6.0 swap it I'll probably put the 5.3 in something else and cam it because its a strong runner.
@@whynotmotoring that 212/218 would need a converter in a 5.3 as far as cam manufacturers I pick cams by the rpm Power Band where it's going to be used. But the 212/218 in a 6.0 with 5.3 heads might not need a converter 🤔 i used 5.3 heads with 6.0 intake valves on my 5.3 that I ported. The tune will make or break the whole thing.
@@mauricedavis2905 That particular build gained power on the dyno from idle on up, so by that logic it shouldnt need one. I would probably give it a small converter anyway though, and the truck is getting 4.56 gears first too so it should be happy. I agree tuning can make it break a combo!
Did you get y pipe from same company?
Yes i did, it all came in a package.
@@whynotmotoring ordered the headers for my 2008 Sierra and now I’m waiting on the y pipe. Thanks for the video.
@@whynotmotoring is it necessary to get the y pipe?
Haha i have those same shitty not-vice grips..they are only still in my shop to pick up things to hot to handle
Did you have to tune the truck after ?
Not required but it is a good idea. It will throw an SES light without the cat monitors.
It is required... you'll forever have a check engine light and run lean.
Did it require a tune to delete the cats
Only in the sense that it throws a check engine light. You can also squeeze more power out of a custom tune with the added efficiency of the headers.
@@whynotmotoring how is that bracket holding up? I just went out and looked at mine and the same bolts are broke and I have never even touched them

Also, use 6 point sockets and never strip a bolt again.
Agree. The "GM" bolts the headers were supplied with, were also not the hardened bolts GM bolts typically are.
Drill the broken bolt out and re tap it, done it a dozen times on the 5.7 hemi and the 6.0 ls has more room to work around it. You did it the lazy man's way.
Sure did, but perfection is the enemy of good enough. Been on there for a year and it hasn't leaked yet. Wasn't worth the investment on an engine I plan on swapping out in the long term.

Are they made in china? How are they for metal thickness and durability?
I believe they are made in china, I'm not positive. I wouldn't describe them as a thin or thick gauge steel. You do get just a slight increase in engine bay noise as is typical with most headers.
How are they lasting? Alot of color change? Flange leaks or warping?
@@codygentry9472 They have the standard gold/purple look of stainless once they heat up, but I've had no issues since the install. They've been on the truck about 9 months now.
