- Installing some cheaper headers that I got from Ebay. They seem to fit pretty good. Not sure why the truck was surging on the first start. Maybe not having the bad exhaust leak the computer doesn't know how to compensate yet.

Great Video. Any update on how these performed? Notice any difference in power or mpg? THANKS!
thanks man ...i will be looking for same project but mind is 5.3 ...good work👍🏻
you all probably dont care at all but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb lost my account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
@Kaiser Blaine Instablaster :)
@Sebastian Jamison thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
e c m was cleared had to relearn idle thanks for your time my 2000 silverado 15000 z71 has 306,250 miles on drive train and the broken bolts also, nice upgrade and fix.
The main reason these exhaust manifold bolts break is the cast manifolds heat up at a different rate than the grade 6 or 8 bolts GM used to hold them down into the aluminum heads, three different types of metals expanding and contracting over and over again, and the one with the most stress looses, THE BOLTS.
Tedious chore
You persevered
Good for you
Friend of mine had the same problem when he got headers.. We replaced spark plugs and wires and it ran great, no more problems and then needed o2 sensors. Seems like the headers man the combustion hot and burn the plugs. New plugs can run at higher temps, also try some 93 octane, seemed to really help it. Good luck man!
I put new plugs in it before I put the headers on. It was running fine today so I don't think I have an issue.
Those headers are really good...they make same or more hp than good brands
Great videos!!! Thanks for posting
Glad you like them.
I have the speed engineering 1 7/8" long tubes for an 01 1500. Speed engineering actually does make good quality products.
Very happy with them so far. Can't beat the price. Would have been nice to have gotten the right bolts for the job.
How did your 1 7t8ths line up for fitment, they install good?
Looking at replacing my stock manifolds on my 98 Silverado. I'll probably go with a set of name brand. But, good video.
What brand did you go with? I put a set of Gibson GP102S-C on my '97 Silverado nearly five years ago and they're holding up well here in the Indiana climate. The fitment was spot on as well.
The stud is for the old heat shield
Those are nice man
Pretty good for the price.
Like the series
Thanks
Outstanding!👍👍👍👍👍
I think the bolts break off from repeated heating and cooling, which is called annealing. Over time They get so soft that when the exhaust heats up and expands, those bolts just snap right off. I'm crying to myself right now, I have three on the drivers side that are broken inside the threads, and of course one of those is the one right by the firewall.
Not sure if anyone has done this but I heard a thin cut between each pipe so that way it doesn’t warp and need to be tightened all the time
After a couple days make sure to go back and re-torque all of the bolts that hold the headers to the cylinder head.
I put some heat cycles on them and then re tighten them.
It's a shame that companies sell bolt-on equipment that have to be tweaked to get it to fit. They do look good other than that. I think you are correct about the a/c causing the surge but it could be that the computer had to relearn everything too since the battery was disconnected.
For under $200 for polished stainless headers I expected them to not fit very good. I am not happy about the bolts being wrong. It had kind of a low idle the next day. Not sure what's going on.
Hook up a scan tool and see what the fuel is doing.
@@mossman381 I remember back in the 80s studying Communist manufacturing . Haaahaaaa! That was the complaint . nothing ever fit right ! You had to grind or modify it to fit .
is all I wanted to know ,,, I'm looking and I do not know if I buy JBA header or one of these but I already decided, I'll take the risk and I'll buy those, man..thanks
How are those bolts holding up? Heads look identical to my 6.2 I've been putting off due the same issues :p
Dude they look fucking good nice job brother
They are good headers for the money. No issues with them so far. They are changing color some.
Good job dude I like it I think am gonna buy them thank you for your video they are good
Never put the bolts that come with the kits. Nor the old ones. Simply buy better ones for peace of mind. Nice headers though.
Where could one obtain better

@@KillaCamm thank you. That’s who others said to go with as well :)
haha i just knew your were going to headers ,great job on the video man, lots of detailed info for anyone wanting to know an just a idea use some old vise grips or c clamp just clamp them on there an be done with it lol i know some are thinking ya okay but i think it would work an if you didn't say anything about it no body would even know :) but if i were you i think i go get some spark plug boot protectors just in case
I am sure there are many vehicles running around with vise grips holding things on :) The plug wires do have steel sleeves on them.
my dad drove a car around for a week with 17 pairs of vise grips holding the front clip on the car he was working on lol was getting body work and paint. guess he didn't want to put bolts back in just to take them back out in a few days lol
My dad also likes to use them on our tractors :)
Nice video, did the exhaust sound nice with headers opposed to the factory manifold?
I didn't really notice an exhaust difference. I had a factory muffler then. I now have a flowmaster and it sounds good. Not sure it sounds any different with headers. Changing or deleting the cats would probably make more difference with the sound.
I bought some for my truck, should be here next week, I have one broken bolt and its in the worst spot, drivers side in the back, one thing i noticed my 2006 has no egr, doesnt even have a place to mount one, I read they got rid of them in 03
That's going to be a tuff one to get out. Not sure about the egr. I have only seen up to a 2002. I have been happy with them so far.
my dad had the magnaflow dual to single (4" tail) and it sounded crazy goodwas a really good sounding truck
You don't happen to have the part #

again thanks for the video! i was wondering why some of the name brand shorty headers look kinda chopped up with more welds and the cheap headers have fewer welds and look more smoother. whats defference? also how are the cheap ones holding up? bought some shorty headers that look exactly like the ones in the video for my 05 silverado 2500 hd off ebay. broken bolts? yep, one in the center on passenger side, one on the very back on the drivers side. should be fun! thanks again!
These are holding up great. No issues except they are turning colors.
@@mossman381 great! thanks for getting back to me!
It's got a vacuum leak. You can here it if you listen close when you start it up..
Looks good. I put headers on my 2000 Tahoe and never could get the collector flanges to hold a gasket. That and the price of 7.4l headers has me hesitating to do the same on my current truck.
I am a little worried about the passenger side blowing out.
thanks for this video mossman!! how many hours would you guys estimate to do this manifold replacement work by just removing the wheel well covers??
I don't really know the hours but time will vary depending on how many manifold bolts you have broken and how fast you can get them out. My drivers side all the bolts come out and had no broken ones. The passenger side had 3 broken bolts and took awhile to get them out. Having to do it with the fenders in place will probably slow you down a lot. More so on the drivers side.
mossman381
thanks for the input... I have what looks like two bolts on each side left lol!! it has to get fixed!! Maybe you can recommend a good place to order from?
TeaLeaf PG That doesn't sound good. The drivers side is a hard side to work on. I bought some cheaper headers on Ebay. The link is in the description. You can spend upwards of $500 on a set of headers.
The engine sound?? Oh yeah, that's awesome!!! It sounds like the first submarine ever made was pulled up from the sea and put back in to action by installing it into my truck.
I betcha he could talk the horns off a evil mother in law
I see this was posted November 6 2016. How have the long term results been for you? I found I have a cracked passenger side manifold. When I previously changed the manifold gaskets, I noticed a lot of stress on that manifold from the downpipe, and they don't line up very close. Have you noticed any issues this way? I might just purchase this, and buy my own set of bolts and nuts with lock washers.
They seem to be holding up good. They are turning color. I wish I would have gotten better gaskets and ARP locking bolts. Otherwise I would buy them again.
The surging was most likely the computer relearning with the difference in air passing through
Yup, I feel like the truck had more power with these and a Flowmaster muffler.
ive had good luck with ebay headers but the one thing i always do is run a strait egde over flanges and make sure they they are flat..if they arent i run a flat metal file over them and get them flat
That is probably a good idea.
HaaHaaaa! CCP !
No heat shield for the plugs and wires now. How are they doing?
I think the plugs have a little heat shield on them from factory. I haven't really checked it over lately.
Once you get a couple heat cycles threw the system they should warp to where they need to be and them gaskets should seat down i has this problem when i replaced the muffler on my car the flange at the cat pack after some heat cycles it sealed up the way it should have
jacob zueter yes sir you are correct
What’s the collector size bolts?
Does your passenger side header rubb on the fire wall heat shield? Mine does sum on my 5.3 thank
I don't think so.
So how are these supplied gaskets working out for you??? I was going to order long tube headers from speed engineering but I kind of like how easy it is for these shorty headers
Never had any problems while I owned it. Fitting long tubes will be much harder.
How do you like them? How are they holding up?
Moss man why didn’t you use some Never Seize on the Bolts you went back with, jus wondering
I put some anti-seize on the bolts. Always use that for exhaust.
I was wondering what you thought of the headers was thinking of getting a set for my truck
They seems to be good for the price. I haven't had any problems with them. I would recommend good quality bolts and get a good gasket set. I used what they had and wish I would have gotten some ARP bolts and Felpro gaskets.
mossman381 why do you say that, was it just sizing issue you stated? Debating doing em as long as i have intake leak
Are you using factory exhaust/muffler? Can you make video of how it sounds on the outside? Any low-end torque loss? Mpg differences?
Believe I had factory muffler then. I have a 40 series Flowmaster now. Feels like it has a bit more power now. Doesn't sound any different. Never checked mpg.
What technique did.younise.for.the bolt closest to the firewall on the driver side? Do you recommend header wrap after running this setup for a while. Did you notice it produced any more heat than stock? Thank you very much for this video. Thinking about tackling this one myself. Might as well upgrade to the nice looking headers. 🤷 Did you notice any power increase with the headers?
Not sure what you mean by technique. I have many wrenches and probably used a combination of them to get to the hard to reach bolts. I wouldn't wrap them. Didn't notice anything melting from extra heat. I actually think I did notice a little power increase. They did turn colors after being used for a few years. Not something I would recommend for a show vehicle. The hard part was getting the old exhaust manifolds out. I have a video on that as well.
@@mossman381I guess I watched your manifold removal video and this video back to back, though I was commenting on the manifold video. Haha. Technique, as in torch, or easy out or both. It's just a tighter/harder to reach area with that bolt, and that's the one that's broken on my truck. Just trying to figure out the plan of attack.
I was lucky to not have the driver side broken. I found that heat and welding a nut was the best way. They have clamps that replace the bolt when you can't get them out.
I believe this is the driver side rear clamp: amzn.to/3kRbxks
@@mossman381 thank you for that link. I hope I can get it out, but that is also good to know. That is an option.
Any ideas on a muffler if you are going to replace it? I have seen a company on eBay called Flo pro. They make oem to the truck but just bit louder
Not sure about the rest of the exhaust. I have always like Flowmaster. They are expensive but I have always been happy with them. I heard a Magnaflow that sounded pretty good.
I have a Flowmaster on mine right now but I am thinking of switching to the Corsa DB or the Borla XR1. I really like how the Corsa DB sounds on the 6.0L. A bit pricey but sounds so good IMO! There are a couple of vids on youtube with 2500HD and the Corsa DB catback
Hi Mossman,
Ive got the GMC 2500HD in 6.0 and want to do the same thing....got three header bolt broken in the factor headers and got to do the removal thing....groan, Question: did those headers ever throw a code? Some fellow on CZcams had some long headers and had to go the a dyno shop to have some delete work done. But you didnt have any problems afterwards?
When it's really cold the truck has a little trouble running but I think it's because I have the wrong gap on the spark plugs. It had a few fault codes when I bought it. Other than that the truck runs great with the headers. I think I can feel a little more power. These headers have the EGR port in them. You can get headers without that. Then you would have to have that deleted.
Thats pretty good for inexpensive headers. I wonder if it was running rough on the first start up due to the battery being disconnected and having to relearn everything.
They are pretty good for the price. I hope the surging was something simple. It's never done that before. It had a really low idle the next day.
mossman381 fuel trims needed to be relarned
reweydewy It seemed to run fine today.
Ya ahahahah that's what all you guys watching this 8:12 just that one hole doesn't line up and has to come completely back apart. Remember this when you approach a shop to install your ebay parts. Good day YT
Curious, How are these headers holding up almost 2 years later?
I've been told these inexpensive headers fail surprisingly quickly...
Thanks
I don't get to drive the truck as much I would like. The headers seem to be holding up last time I looked. They are getting a burnt colored look to them.
Any rust?
My buddy has had them on his 01 5.3 for two years and daily drives his and tows a camper. He likes them and they still look good
Man If I'm doing this on a Avalanche and I want to remove the cats but still wanna be able to pass inspection what can I do there, and what do I do with my o2 sensors, thanks ,and good vid
If you remove the cats you won’t be able to pass inspection. You can run carb legal shorties but they won’t sound as good as long tubes or cat less. I’m in the same boat as you but I think imma just end up buying the shorties and leaving the cats. My truck is my daily and all I want is a little bit more noise and maybe some power if I can get it
Moss man it was the magna from crew cab short box kit. 616.99 on eBay
The kit is too expensive for me but I could go with just the muffler.
I know I want to get the muffler but not sure which one will would with stock
hello, sir, then you recommend one of those header for a Nissan Armada or titan
Not sure about Nissan but I would buy these headers again. They are still holding up on my truck.
are you still happy with these? I have the exact same truck but 4x2 and want to get rid of the factory manifolds. Would you say it would be worth wrapping them these headers or do they not put off too much more heat?
I am still happy with these. I would get some ARP locking header bolts. They don't send the right bolts and mine have loosened up a bit. I am not sure about heat. Would have been a good comparison if I would have gotten heat readings before and after.
I get most of my parts from Ebay and CarQuest/Advance Auto.
Uploaded my first video . I'll make better videos , if I ever find the keys to dads Camaro .
Is the rest of your exhaust stock? How much different does it sound now?
The rest is stock. It sounds quieter because the exhaust leaks on the manifolds are gone. I haven't driven the truck because the front end isn't on.
I see. I was curious because usually people put on headers along with a new exhaust. Also, a flowmaster super 50 or 70 series muffler sounds great on these trucks.
Roy Fabian I am not sure about the rest of the exhaust.
Can you use the same OEM bolts from the manifolds to install the headers?
Not sure. If I could do it over I would have order some nice ARP bolts.
mossman381 how much would it cost me to order them I only have the headers but I'm missing the bolts and all gaskets but the headers are the same same exact ones you have there
Not sure about what they cost. Go to Summitracing and you can put your truck in the search and get the header bolts and gaskets. Don't cheap out on gaskets. Get some good ones. That is another thing I would have done. Got a good set of gaskets. I am guessing the ones that came with mine were cheap.
mossman381 thank you sir
let us know how they do after a few weeks. they sure look nice, might have to set back dome money and get a set later on down the road.
I will do a review on them down the road especially if I have problems with them.
Have you noticed a increase in power since installing them?
I didn't drive the truck long before doing this so it's hard to tell but I think it has a little more power after the header install. I still have the factory muffler so I am not really getting the whole benefit of the headers just yet. Performance cats would also probably help.
That is true. Thanks for making the videos.
My 2002 is nothing but a gm dud..broken bolts everywhere..broken electronic dash..door locks dont work.power seats and stereo don't work..its a nightmare..startwn to replace alot of stuff on it this weekend.
What size drill bit ?
They are 8mm x 1.25 so in theory the biggest drill bit you can use is 6.75mm without damaging the female threads, and that is assuming you are perfectly centred....
hi, did you notice any performance change with the shorty install? any Fuel improvement, or acceleration changes?
Thinking of changing my manifold leak on my 01 silverado 2500.
I didn't drive the truck much before the header install. I might have noticed a little bit of power increase. I never check fuel mileage before or after. So far these are holding up good.
Dude reminds me of Carl GerbSmidt...
Nice job. I have a 2003 silverado 4.8l with 88k miles and if the truck sits for more than a 10-15 minutes, it turns over for a few seconds before it actually starts. If you turn the key to the on position for a few seconds, turn it off and then try to start it, it starts fine. I replaced to fuel pump relay, fuel filter and cleaned the mass air flow sensor. I read online where people say it could be the starter, fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump but I'm not sure what to check. Have you had any experience with this?
Bobby Taylor I have the same problem with my 2500hd 6.0 I have tried the same things you have but with no results
Yeah, I don't want to go throwing expensive parts at it and it not fix it. Especially don't want to pay $300 for a fuel pump and it not fix .
I haven't had that problem but the fuel pressure regulator is pretty easy to change and might be worth a try.
I thought about that. The fuel pump sounds fine when you turn the key on and doesn't make any weird noises or anything.
sound like my ol ford ranger does the kind of the same thing if i turn key on a few time start it up it run for about 30 seconds then shut off then i can start it back up and it will stay running i heard that might be a fuel losing it's prime idk i am a keep running it till it doesn't run no more haha
Are you torquing these bolts down?
I just snug them down. Go back after a few heat cycles and snug them down again. Really hard to get a torque wrench on all the bolts.
Do you have cruise control in that truck?
Yup
@@mossman381 - OK thanks for the reply. Just making sure I wasn't missing something on my 3500 van. I just put a Dorman #917107 manifold repair clamp kit on my 6.0 driver's side rear # 7 cylinder. I discovered the broken bolt recently as I've been throwing various parts at it since 11-06-20. My alternator really did burn up and cook my battery and when I finally got it running again the MIL was on with PO300. I thought it would relearn itself and finally found this big exhaust leak which I hope is causing the lean condition followed by the PCM adding fuel to a certain threshold then throwing the code and into limp. I can't believe GM used those tiny M8 bolts while at the same time drilling and tapping bigger holes for the repair clamps to mount!
Is that your power steering pump wining. You may want to replace it while you have it torn down so much. It should be easier. and Keep a eye on your frame. near the coil mounts for cracking once it starts it will go quickly.
The power steering has a leak so I am guessing the previous owner let it run dry. Pretty sure the pump needs to be replaced. This truck has torsion bars. It's a 4x4.
Don Hanson sounded more like the alternator to me. could be a combo of both..
reweydewy It's the pump.
did u use factory bolts
No, used some regular metric bolts we had. The best thing would be to go get some stainless bolts.
mossman381 if i order original stainless steel bots from gm would work
Yes, GM bolts will work but not sure they have stainless. The flange on the stainless header might be a little thicker than the original GM exhaust manifold. Factory bolts should be long enough.
Did the headers improve your gas mileage?
Never checked fuel mileage. I lifted this truck 6" and put 35" tires on it so fuel mileage wasn't a concern for me. Making the engine more efficient should help fuel economy.
@@mossman381 mine is lifted 6” on 24” snowflakes with 35s
Looks like they missed a weld on the bottom of the third one... or am I seeing things
MrPalvis looks like third and fourth
It's welded inside and out. There are two places the weld doesn't go all the way around. I assumed they couldn't reach in and weld it because the tubes were in the way.
mossman381 so it won't leak?
scorpion8525 No leak, the flange is welded on the tubes from the inside and the outside.
mossman381 mine leaked bad
Shorty headers aren't a cost effective upgrade. Dyno results have shown they might give you 5hp over stock manifolds. The real gain come with long tube headers and better cylinder scavaging.
Anyone know if these would pass smog in Cali? I want a set so bad
Not sure.
I dont think Speed Engineering have CARB compliant shorty headers. JBA on the other hand they do.
Steeda isnt name brand?
Not sure what Steeda is. These aren't name brand headers. They are cheap Ebay parts.
Alejandro Westinghouseshire speed engineering is has probably sold more ls truck headers than all other's offered on the market.
Seems like someone would have told them they are sending out the wrong size bolts.
I would not consider speed engineering headers ebay headers you'all, they are a good medium brand header but not a name brand like kooks but not a low ebay brand like obx either.
That thing sounds like it's looking for a place to die........! Clean the IAC and throttle body with cleaner.
The was the first fire up after the headers. Truck had a huge exhaust leak before.
Sounds like the bolts are also made in CCP ? If you really have to run those headers pulling trailer . I think they will start to crack ? Made in CCP ! It's made cheap as you can get .
Can't really say much bad about these headers. They are a lot better than I thought and are holding up just fine. They have been on the truck since this video. They are changing color but these aren't show car headers. I would buy them again and recommend them. If I was going to do this over again I would get a good set of header bolts and gaskets.
Fix audio
I want to do this. Is it worth doing it?
It is unless you start breaking exhaust manifold bolts. Then the job sucks.
