- KISS on Tom Snyder's 'Tomorrow Show' on Halloween Night 1979 (Best quality I have seen) On Oct. 31, 1979, the personality conflicts that had been privately tearing Kiss apart were made public on live national television.
It took about only 18 seconds for the band's appearance on Tom Synder's Tomorrow show to go off the rails. That's the moment when a clearly inebriated Ace Frehley starts cackling and making jokes about being the lead "trout" player, riffing off Snyder's earlier off-camera mispronunciation of "bass" guitar. Frehley's increasingly boisterous jokes, laughter and interruption soon begin to dominate the proceedings, to the obvious annoyance of the band's usual spokesmen, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons.
Stanley seems to laugh along through gritted teeth before immediately, but futilely, attempting to get the conversation back on course. Meanwhile, Simmons shoots death stares at his drunken bandmate, probably wishing he really could breathe fire.
But Snyder, who at one point notes that his producers had warned him Frehley would "be the hardest to make talk," clearly sees more value in his antics than the more standard biographical and promotional chatter being offered by the sober duo, and gamely eggs the Spaceman on......
Ace steals the show. Hilarious. The fact that Snyder goes along with it - much to Gene and Paul's seething silent frustration - makes it even funnier.

My favorite Kiss interview. Ace is a trip
Gene & to some degree Paul were the actual disasters on the show. It's very easy to see Gene seething at the attention & time up front Ace & Peter are getting. Paul looked very uncomfortable but loosened up & at times seemed to be enjoying himself. Gene was another story, there's so much one can point out about Gene's behavior in this interview but something that usually slips under the radar is when Peter said he likes collecting & shooting guns, you can hear Gene trying to coach Peter with "you mean toy guns". Gene later said he was worried about the band's image & said Ace & Peter in this interview were destroying it but when Gene was asked by Snyder what he likes to do in his time off he jokingly opened with "orgies & human sacrifices". Human sacrifices - wtf? Drunk or not Ace ruled in this interview with his stories, sense of humor & back n forth banter with Tom. If Ace or Peter had followed "the script", kept quiet, only speaking when spoken to & giving brief short answers to Tom's questions we wouldn't be watching or talking about this 40 some odd years later.

Gene needed to lighten up. Yeah, Ace was drunk, but he wasn't behaving badly. He was being funny and friendly and Tom was having a great time... it wasn't a bad interview, although Gene almost dragged it down with his sulking. Ace wasn't the problem here.
Not a Kiss fan by any measure but this was GREAT Television. Superbly directed too. The Production, Tech and Stage Crew were on their game and captured a moment.
Paul and Gene are delusional with thinking Ace and Peter ruined this. They’re the only ones that show any kind of personality and charisma. Paul and Gene are so unlikeable and have no personality in this, and taking themselves way too seriously. The reason anybody rewatches this interview today is because of Aces sense of humor and personality shining through. Well I wouldn’t even think he was drunk if it weren’t for Paul and Gene mentioning it every chance they can.
I wouldn’t go so far as to describe Paul as unlikeable. Gene, maybe (although his Asberger’s moment with horror movie trivia is admittedly endearing).
My favorite part is when Tom says Paul breaks his guitar into teensie weensie pieces and hands them out to the crowd and then they go home and trade it for food. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

In the latest KISStory documentary they said, that they were pissed because Ace was late for the interview, showed up drunk, and act like nothing happened. This is believeable knowing Ace. They also said something about Peter laughing but not because he found the situation funny, more like because he saw Gene and Paul embarassed. Also believeable. Plus this interview back in late 70s wasnt really helping them out, as their reputation wasnt best by this time, and for many people back in the days seeing a drunk Guy telling jokes on TV was a Red flag.
And while this May be True lets face it - the interview was iconic, and is one of the small bits that created the legend of KISS. That is also a price of fame, things like that can happen

No matter how many times I watch this, the part when Tom fucks up and calls Gene, "George" and how Peter says Oh my god, will always make me laugh.
The only interview when their guard is down, for virtually their whole career.
4 New Yorker guys , each one the polar opposite of the other. Gene & Paul may have been the career driven / sensible ones but they were entirely different personalities.
Ace’s humour is sublime. He may of been drunk & high but he had Snyder almost falling off the sofa, in hysterics.
When Ace cracks the big lines , like about the cows, and people crying about spending money seeing a KISS show, all of them break out laughing. Gene & Paul may of not been able to steer the interview in the normal way, but they were laughing as hard as anyone at the brilliant cracks from Ace.
After Ace says he's the trout player you can see him at about 4:06 saying something like "what?", in response to probably Gene telling him to knock it off. Gene and Paul's assholes were puckered too tight.

I’ve rewatched this interview a number of times over the years, brilliant, one of the best they ever did. I think the whole “Gene and Paul seething…” over Ace’s stealing the interview is overblown. I’m sure there was tension at times, alcohol didn’t help as Gene (like Frank Zappa) is a teetotaler and consequently his tolerance for Ace’s antics is short. Still, you know these guys had a lot of laughs along the way. I give Gene enormous credit for his Bill Graham inspired philosophy of “…people work their asses off 5 days a week to pay for a ticket to the show, what’s in it for them?” KISS has always delivered.

I've heard about this before, only seen clips never the entire interview and wow, this is gold. The directors really sealed it, and if the camera operators weren't cued in it probably wouldn't be as funny. You can actually see the point when the camera operator starts repeatedly going back to Gene & Paul to capture their reactions after Ace lets loose. Gene scowling and Paul cringing is just priceless and really, if Ace wasn't wasted on Stoli we wouldn't still be watching this today. What an amazing piece of pop culture history.
My favorite interview. Some people, including Gene, think it's terrible because Ace was so lively and on point. I don't think it was that bad, because it served its purpose of "getting them into themselves". Gene and Paul did have a few (feeble) laughs, but this was the first time that Ace really talked about himself on vamers. Yes, he was drunk, because he was nervous before the show. But if the viewers really listen to him, they'll learn more than the stock answers that Paul and Gene usually give.
Ace was always authentic. Gene and Paul were always giving scripted answers. This is my favorite rock band interview ever

Maybe the best KISS interview ever. PC seems a bit absent. PS takes an active part. AF is just having a good time. Thanks to various substances. GS gets pointed out that he is not the center of attention. His face derails more than once. He has not learned to this day.
It is Kiss' best interview. It was great fun and Ace and Peter gave real answers to questions and not the Gene and Paul usual bullshit answers.

Saw them open for Maiden in Long Beach in 84’ no make up. I have to admit, they put on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.

Gene seemed fascinated with Ace being able to build remote control helicopters with bluetooth technology that could be used on guitars. They all seemed pretty close it's sad how it turned out.
I always get the sense that Paul and Gene never truly hated Ace….that Ace is just such a head case that it’s hard to get truly angry at him….more so frustrated….and they recognized his talent and actually wished he would contribute more….whereas they seem to actively hate Peter….Peter seems volatile and violent, and unpredictable…..
They must have had some sort of camaraderie especially in the early days. Peter went completely nuts with the drugs/woman/stardom by Dynasty and started actively sabotaging the band live. Ace was just off the reals but as you said he had a lot of talent and was a bit of a savant. Absent the substance abuse he probably could have had a very good solo career or could have contributed well to another group. It’s abundantly clear from reading all their books that all four were dysfunctional with their own quirks. If not for their common goal they’d have never crossed paths. It’s a miracle they were able to accomplish what they did without actually killing each other.

Paul Stanley has no sense of humor. He is clearly annoyed because unlike the concerts he doesn't dominate the conversation. Watch any given Kiss concert and you'll see Paul's boring cliché monolouges. Ace did rock n roll all nite and party on Tomorrow that day!
Even from the beginning it is clearly that Gene and Paul was trying to dominated the interview toward Plain tasteless Boring conversation and trying to put all of us to sleep. While Ace manage to keep us Awake and laughed the whole time. Thank you Ace 😎😎😎

I think we all know Ace stole the show. But the others added cool stories and good content. Gene gets a bad rap here. He was witty and trying to be edgy. Unfortunately for him Ace and Tom Snyder had the TV chemistry and Gene couldn’t equal it. Great show either way.

I see a lot of people saying that Gene and Paul seemed aggravated and that Ace stole the show. It recently came out in a documentary that at this time Ace and Peter had been messing up (getting drunk and high, being late to shows, acting up etc). Gene and Paul took it very serious and weren’t into drugs, drinking or nonsense. So if you rewatch this knowing this information, you’ll probably see it differently.
Wouldn't have mattered much because most of us knew this snd still, Ace shined and even if he shined sober..those two would've been annoyed.

Who pissed in your Wheaties? He absolutely shined that night. Gene and Paul are scripted people. You can absolutely tell who is trying to put on aires and who is down to earth and funny.
Also, anyone on booze and drugs back in the day sat and said it in interviews. It only came out after either getting arrested, out in rehab snd stuff like that. Ace wasn't the only one in the entertainment business to do that.

An interesting moment, considering Paul's later suggestions that Ace and Peter were a bit anti-semitic. If Ace actually was going for the salute, I'm not suggesting for a moment that he would have meant it seriously, but to even do a it jokingly in front of your two Jewish bandmates is kind of on the nose, to put it mildly.
