Together with the BMW X5, the Mercedes Benz ML Class was instrumental in shaping the now popular luxury SUV category. We now take a look at the first ever Mercedes Benz ML Class, the W163 ML.
Today's tester is this 2002 facelifted Euro-only ML270 CDI model with its 2.7L I5 Turbo-Diesel which makes 163PS, and 370Nm torque.

I have ml 55 amg and it’s a great car , the m113 is gorgeous, 395 k km no problems at all.
Would absolutely love to drive one of those

This is great video, lots of information and just what I wanted to know! Thanks for making this! I've been looking for an affordable SUV which can handle rough stuff (winter with heavy snow here, plus some nasty forest roads) but also occasionally carry 6 or 7 people with decent comfort on relatively long road trips. I tested one W163 couple of years ago, a 2003 ML320 but I was seriously disappointed: the ride was dangerously soft and steering had absolutely no effect on the direction. I'm now starting to wonder if there was something wrong with that car's steering rack and suspension... Either way, I'm starting to think a nice W163 would make a good practical classic for daily use, while the next best alternatives (mk2 Hyundai Santa Fe or mk2 KIA Sorento maybe) are still too pricey here.

I always loved the design of these first gen ML's, although I've never driven one. But i've ridden a first gen ml350, very smooth suv and v6 also comfy seats.
Btw I've followed you on IG and your friend zeke who has a great collection of mercs.

What's the fuel consumption in heavy city traffic? Is that a 5sp or 6sp tranny? Would you know if it shares any parts with the other more common mercs?
I prefer this model over the newer models … worked at Mercedes as a Diagnostic tech and these only came in for the window washer motor .. I never fixed anything on them .. interior on mine everything works like it’s new and I use it daily it was old when I bought it , the basic wear and tear parts go of course like fuel pump .. it’s cheap to replace just the little motor , power steering on mine was noisy no maintenance I replaced it was easy enough , O2 sensor . The later models w164 350 v6 motor has that balancer shaft problem in all of those smooth v6 motors 3.9v6 so avoid the 350 v6. Rest all amazing . 😊
