Thanks for uploading. A really substantial series. Super production straight to the point and not dumbed down for the moron population of today .

What a nostalgia trip......when channel four made good programmes rather than the LCD crap that a lot of their output is now!

Re: all the bitching about a nationalized rail system not being profitable: why should it be? The road transport infrastructure doesn't make money. No one expects it to. It costs a fortune in tax dollars to operate and maintain, but it serves a vital purpose. Rail transport serves the same purpose. Why should it be expected to profit as well?

Personal as much as I wish to go back to BR, we all know it wouldn't work, eventually MPs will sabotage it again.
I believe a state own private company should bring the railway together, all them to set the tickets (not the government as it is currently), and all profits made go back into our railway for reinvestment

A very good series which reveals the true story of how the nationalised industries were deliberately scuppered, in the interests of greed and privilege. It's the first time I've heard a presenter mention the term 'workers' control' - the central issue which should have been addressed in 1945 together with a policy of no compensation to the parasitic shareholders of the private companies.

They have double decker trains all over the world. No reason it couldn't have worked here.

probably had something to do with the height of our bridges, they're all really low and tight, at least in and around London.

Could only fit on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and in Crossrail, whenever that gets built. And HS2 if that gets built.

Had them in holland when i went there. As said it would be hard to get them in the uk as alot of the infrastructure has been there since victorian times and bridges will be too low not to mention in-adequate loading gauge on the lines. Double decker trains would sure help solve over crowding

The Ministry Of Transport should've let the Transport Commission appoint the chairmen of the executive branches. Perhaps less conflict would've arrisen and more could've been accomplished. Image if the integrated transport system worked as planned! That and if the conservative party hadn't come to power at that time, the railways and all other transport probably would've been much better off. Also, they should've created special lobbies such as a British Railway Federation that would fight for them and associated companies, like the British Road Federation had 😒
