Very interesting to watch this 35 years after it was made. It was good at the time. The coverage of the railways in World War 2 is well done. This programme deserves to be preserved for Kerry Hamilton's interview about the WW2 experience with the legendary railway manager Gerald Fiennes (LNER and BR). He died in the 1980s so it was skilled of her to get an interview with him in his last years.
I think the most appealling aspect of this programme is the fact that it explores the social apects from the working person viewpoint - and one can see how excellent the presentation is up to todays presentation. Definitely one of the Reithian principles of education at work.
Dreadful music! Was this done in the early 80's? Brilliant footage of our once great railway system before the road lobby destroyed much of it. Now we have almost gridlock on many of our roads and killer fumes to boot. Don't you just love our politicians?

He wrote a splendid book entitled 'I tried to run a railway' - well worth a read.

It was on Channel 4.

Correct on the road lobby's destruction of the country and 'fuck no' on the politicians....
This series aired in 1984.
Or maybe people voted with their feet and welcomed the availability of independent transport?
