My 1989 Nissan Sentra had a bulletproof transmission. Imagine all the stupid things a 16 year old would do to a car and my Sentra handled it. I just did the routine oil changes and some minor maintenance and it just kept running. I will admit the engine starting knocking at the 175,000 mile mark, but I blame myself for driving the car so hard.

Im doing the same with my Jeep Patriot’s jatco CVT. Before doing a fluid/filter change I tracked the fluid temp in summer heat for a week or so, after service the temp dropped by about 20F on average.
The filter on the trans fluid cooler was so gummed up the pleats were folding over. I assume most of fluid was pushed through the bypass instead of the cooler. This was at 50k, the mfr recommended service interval is 120k…

I've been told it's so they can let the robots control the specific shift points, engine revs, fuel mixture, etc. to keep the emission levels within the specs they need to meet the USA standards. One thing I always note for people crying about "manuals are dying" no they aren't. Around the world they are still being sold as the affordable option. American drivers don't buy cars. They buy loans for the privilege of driving a vehicle owned by a stealership. The stealerships set the demand to the manufacturer.
This has eff-all to do with emissions standards. That's a right-wing / libertarian (i.e. incorrect) talking point. Other countries are waaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of the US in that regard and still you can buy manuals. We got receipts, stop sharing bs

Why? because the old car just died and they need a car for tomorrow and his point is sure, you can order a base car and wait for 6 weeks or pay another 75 a month for options that cost the car company very little and get a car right now... The USA is seen as a cash cow with nothing but rich people and companies like Apple, Nike and Nissan sell us cheap junk made in China for double what they charge people in Russia. It's more of my wife's car, but we are about to hit 100k miles without any CVT issues. This car has driven from the Gulf to the east coast to the west coast and is still a daily driver. I don't know if it is user error that causes so many Nissan CVTs to die or if it's just a factory lottery. Either way, I really wish we got more manual transmissions in these cars. I believe the Versa is the only one in the states with a manual as an option, but only on the base model ='(

@@williamevans6522They do have excess RTV issues, which isn't ideal, but it will pass through the large pickup tube, and the strainer will catch any strings and large chunks. I plan on having the oil pan dropped during maintenance to get it cleaned out. I don't think it's RTV clogging oil passages.
I think the main issue is the pump potentially getting starved during repeated or persisted hard right turns, probably exacerbated by the large pickup tube and 0w20 oil. The aftermarket is still trying to sort it out with baffle plates or different oil pans.
If we're going to track it, I'd look into these options more and probably use a heavier oil on track day. For driving around town, I'm not too worried about it.

i work in car rental, and I drive this generation of Sentra around a lot. as an owner of a B15 Spec V, the B18 picked right back up where the B16 and B17 fumbled and took the platform in the direction it should have gone when the B15 needed to be replaced. it's an amazing car, new life for the Sentra platform, and the base model cars we have in our rental fleet can easily outdo what my modded B15 is already capable of.
all of Sarah's thoughts on this car are a mirror of my own thoughts on the B18, from the well deserved praise to the little negatives she brought up. the B18 just needs its chance to truly become what it can really be and reach its fullest potential, and it can shine like its SE-R predecessors once did. my hope in Nissan is not very deep, however, but I myself would very much like to see Nissan bring some inexpensive fun back to their lineup. theSR is setting the right foundation for it, now they just need to build something amazing with it.

Another great review Sarah! You covered everything and then some about this car to the point I almost feel like I test drove it. Also extra credit for using the word samsquanch (TPB)😎. And I know what ya mean, I'm also tall. Was that a scorpion on the fender in the intro? I really miss the older cars that were manual transmissioned (is that a word). In the same era of your (spectacular) Celica, the Datsun B210s and Toyota Corollas were simple, not overpriced and fun to drive. Pretty sure that balance can still be found. Don't like robot assistance or CVTs, that stuff is selling more sizzle than steak to me. Always been mostly a Honda fanboy but c'mon Nissan, we're rooting for ya.

1984 Nissan Sentra Std, bought in Giessen Germany. 1.6 Liter 4 cylinder about 69 HP & Torque, 5 speed manual. Speedometer would read about 105MPH on the Autobahn. No Radio or Air Conditioning.

Nice video...drove a Sentra in Germany in the 1990s while stationed there. Nissan is weird and outdated. As for sedans, I wish Mazda would be bring back the Mazda 6...esp the ones with the V6. Even with their new SkyActiv turbo4 under the hood it would be sexyFun with 256 hp

Thanks for sharing. Some important points. This vehicle also has low tires in an urban environment with bumpers and deceleration strips. Parking on a half-pavement you will hear the metal sound of the wheel plowing the road. Under the hood looks messy and access is less convenient changing belts, etc.

My second car was a 99 Infiniti I30T with the 3 L VQ, I loved that car. In fact I sold it to my aunt and she still driving it after I ordered the Subaru thing I didn’t like about the car the axle, beam rear suspension, and the four-speed automatic (you could order a manual but hardly anybody did)

Common issues I've noticed with this car:
Manual gearbox isn't the greatest, I've seen the same car go through 3 replacements.
The engine splash shield is very fragile and almost all of them break.
The Hankook Kinergy GT tires are attrocious tires. I've seen tons of replacements due to sidewall failure. If you purchase this car, get rid of those tires ASAP.

Hi Sarah, my Talking Snake told me to show you this because you like to learn about stuff. So here it is:
The first production car to use a continuously variable transmission (CVT) was the 1958 DAF 600, built in the Netherlands. However, the idea for a CVT has been around for centuries, with Leonardo da Vinci sketching a design in 1490. Other early patents for CVTs were filed in the 1880s by Daimler and Benz.
