I’m just now realizing that in the original game’s opening and ending where you see Aerith, the 2 scenes are actually different. It makes alot more sense that the og was a vision of the future. The whispers can be that the planet is trying to protect its future. And now Sephiroth who we know is in the lifestream and can use it to his will, some what. He nows the planets vision too and they both are trying to come up with another ending

Just like he said at the end of the original game you see Aerith and the beginning of remake it’s her in front of the same mako energy. When I saw that, I immediately remembered the moment in the Original when she comes to Cloud in a dream to tell him she's leaving and then run away from Cloud for him to never see her again before her death. I don't really thing he saw anything in particular, just that he felt what he felt when he saw her leaving. But of course he probably did not understand it.

Unless time travel is involved that doesn't make it a sequel. For a sequel one of the main characters essentially needs to be the same. If Aerith is simply aware of future events she's merely a mystic character as opposed to the exact same one from the original. Personally I think what we've seen is fan service, the sort of thing you'd expect from a remake of a classic.
Time will obviously tell, but with what we actually know at the moment, nobody can say either way for certain.

Serena Not saying it’s fact, but Aerith knowing Red is a child doesn’t necessarily need to have a mystical reason. It’s possible she knows what he is (her mother/inherent Cetra knowledge could apply) or that, having been in Hojo’s dungeon of delights before, she may have seen or heard about him previously, either around the lab in general, from one of Hojo’s ego-stroking monologues, or maybe even something that one of the Turks may have said (since they might have been the ones to bring him in originally.) Lots of possibilities and opportunities for her to know that.
Again, not saying she didn’t know mystically (and not sure if it matters in either case), but it’s explainable in other ways without bending plausibility too much.

It's even before that that Tifa is suspicious of Aerith and her intentions and motives. In the Japanese translation, after they fall into the sewers, if you wake up Tifa, the correct literal translation of what she says to Cloud for "You sure there isn't anything else going on?" is "I wonder why she is giving help to us?" Also, to further point out that that is the correct translation and that the intention of the scene is Tifa questioning Aerith's motives and intentions, they translated in French as "tu sais pourquoi elle t'aide, au moins?" meaning "Do you know why she is helping you, at least?" Again, expressing doubt about Aerith's intentions and motives. In Italian, which is more accurate than the French since it's just a subtitle translation and not a voice acting translation, she says "chissà perché ci aiuta?" meaning "who knows why she helps us?" Again expressing doubt about Aerith's intentions and motives. In Korean, which is the most accurate due to Korean and Japanese naturally being the easiest to translate between each other by far, she says "왜 우리를 도와주는 걸가?" which is pretty much word for word exactly the same as Japanese, meaning "I wonder why she is helping us?" If you translate the Japanese in literal terms, the key words are "tasukete" (助けて), meaning "help us," "kureru" (くれる), meaning "give" speaking from the receiver point of view, which in this case is Tifa and Cloud, and "no kana" (のかな), meaning "I wonder." Translating to "I wonder why she is giving help to us." In every case, it's expressing suspicions about Aerith's motives and intentions.

Nah; there's no story element that describes anything, or even why Tifa saw Marlene here in the first place. So whichever way this is taken, the only thing we know for certain is Aerith heard Marlene's name spoken here. She didn't hear that she was Barret's daughter, or anything about her. Sadly there's too little detail to answer definitively, in either respect. That's why I didn't say this issue holds *no* claim in this respect, just less of one because it's a little muddy.
As in; she definitely heard the name, we just have no story proof of her thought process following that. What we *do* see later is her imbuing memories into Marlene, presumably to make her trust her/calm her down so they could actually leave the bar on time. So yes this is all suspect.

Also 2 interesting things to note are:
1: You don't fight future Cloud, Barret and Tifa in the final fights, but instead it is Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo (the 3 from Advent Children). They got the same weapons as in the movie, Kadaj with the shorter sword using fire attacks, Loz with his electrocuting fist weapon using lighting based attacks and Yazoo with his 2 guns using aero attacks (his element is confirmed in the wiki). In addidion, they summon Bahamut like they do in Advent Children.
2: In chapter 12, while talking to Wedge, Aerith knows that the plate WILL drop on Sector 7 and Wedge says "But...something in my gut tells me we're due for a reckoning. Just this...feeling. Know what I mean?", Aerith replies with "Yeah...I do."

Tifa literally shouted “Marlene!” in the Train Graveyard. Aerith was RIGHT THERE. Yeah you could still argue that she’s already aware of who Marlene is because she’s from the future, but even if that was the case, she still has a solid alibi that Tifa would buy.
Also, I wouldn’t say the “7 seconds till Aerith does” Theory is debunked, the 7 seconds till Meteor hits thing could just be a red herring, something meant to mislead us. Everything Sephiroth does is in his own self-interest, so ask yourself this: which scenerio could he be referencing in order to manipulate Cloud to ultimately achieve his own victory? If he's talking about Meteor, then it would mean that he does not want Meteor to go off, which makes no sense. We know of no other means he could use to attain godhood, so taunting Cloud to stop Meteor does not avail him: it would set him back. Besides that, I don't believe Sephiroth is the kind of person to taunt Cloud just to goad him: he views Cloud as his greatest pawn, and is always pretty clear about his intentions with him.
The other scenario, of him killing Aeris, seems more believable. His Meteor plan fails because of Holy, which Aeris dies to cast, and when that isn't enough, she employs the Lifestream to bolster it. She is capable of this while she is dead, but not alive. So preventing her death seems like it benefits Sephiroth the most. Just my two cents.

Perhaps Aerith came back after the original game (a function of Holy materia?), and Sephiroth has hijacked her knowledge. It would explain the way he touches Aerith when cloud meets her followed by him saying that Cloud can't save her - he saw it all after coming into contact with her. It can also be why the whispers were harassing her in the first place (because she doesn't belong in this timeline) and why cloud is able to see the whispers and the future throughout the game after touching her on loveless street. The whispers are the planet's immune system response to infiltrations of its timeline.

I loved the original game and I even cried when Aerith died. So if there’s a way for Aerith to save the planet without sacrificing herself either through time travel or reincarnation, I will not hate SquareEnix for going that route. Those complaining that the remake sucks because it’s not adhering to the original story, they are the whispers we fought and I’m glad we defeated them. Almost all SquareEnix stories have some form of time travel or a story where the party must fight fate. These stories aren’t set in stone. Everything changes. Everything must change or else we just keep going round and round in circles stuck in this black hole that won’t let go. This is a remake. Not a remaster. If you really expected this to be the same story and are disappointed then just play the original or the latest remastered versions. But honestly, these complainers remind me of bible thumpers who constantly say “no no it’s my way or the highway.” You do realize that myths and fables have changed so much throughout the centuries, right? I'm excited to see how they do it because tbh the whole point of FF7 is loss and life/death and how to deal with those things. So if she doesn't die, it kinda destroys the original purpose. I think the best clue to why I think everything generally will happen the same is Sephiroth's 7 seconds comment. It's not 7 seconds till he kills Aerith but 7 seconds till Meteor strikes, which means to me that he wants everything to happen the same up until 7 seconds Meteor hits. Something within that 7 seconds made him lose and he thinks Cloud is the key to it all.

I had always interpreted the opening of the original FF7 to mean that Aeris had seen her future while communing with the planet via the leaking Mako in Midgar. When you see her face again at the very end of the game (a flashback to that same moment), it’s almost like everything that happened in the actual game was what she saw in her vision. And she still got up and did what she had to do knowing she would die. There are various references to this in the original like when she goes off in the wood behind Bone Village alone and the second time you go to the City of the Ancients with Bugenhagen. I think FF7R Aerith is the same way. Ultimately, that’s her secret. She saw the future in the mako just like in the original, but this time around she wants to try to change something. Probably not for a good reason though. I think the developers just want some creative freedom lol

The theory doing the rounds when I was a kid with the original is that Aerith's face in the ending is the same as her face at the start, it was all a vision given to her by the Lifestream, essentially the entire game was her premonition. She always knew what was happening. That's why she's so immediately clingy around Cloud, why she follows him after he leaves in the night, why she's willing to go through all that Wall Market chaos for someone she barely knows, etc. Replay the original in the mindset that Aerith and Tifa both know a lot more than they let on, it gives a lot of the dialogue new context. Like how knowing what happens at the end of the Pilgrimage changes a lot of FFX.
As for the remake, I kinda hope they're not gonna lean too heavily on time travel/alternate dimensions/etc. It's too much of a can of worms. Look how badly the Kingdom Hearts timeline has become utterly incomprehensible. None of that please. Keep it simple.
With regards to Marlene, I believe she's mentioned in the end of the Train Graveyard with the little girl ghost, so Aerith would know her name at that point, before she offers to rescue her. Marlene does have the ability to sense Aerith's presence in Advent Children Complete, but so does Tifa (the water droplet scene aboard the Shera) so it might not mean all that much.
Aerith's optional scene in chapter 14 basically confirms that she knows things. She urges Cloud not to fall in love with her, trying to spare him the pain of her death. She knows, confirmed. Not up for debate.
Also the ending isn't the first time that 'seven seconds' has been referenced. There's a song by Within Temptation called Stairway To The Skies that starts with the lyrics 'seven seconds til the rise', so presumably it has a meaning outside of FF7. Worth a look perhaps?

Another scene that did it for me was when Aerith says Shinra thinks she could lead them to the promised land, and Barrett replies asking if she could, and Aerith says something like "Even if I wanted to, I couldn't" to me that implies she knows that going to the temple of the ancients is going to result in her death and Sephiroth getting the black materia and yada yada.
Assuming the time travel or Aerith had a vision, I'm torn between Aerith being a reactionary trying to stop Sephiroth, Aerith realizing there has to be a better way than just stopping Sephiroth and letting mankind die eventually, and maybe just maybe Aerith (having a character flaw) decides she no longer wants to be a Martyr. I know this would be a stretch and probably not where it is going, but what if she's trying to find a way where she could still live and to defeat Sephiroth.
One reason I am torn is because I'm not quire sure how Aerith thinks stopping Sephiroth in a different way would lead to a better ending. It seemed to me the damage was done to the planet and the planet would kill off mankind regardless of the Sephiroth story line. And in that sense, maybe Sephiroth really is an arbiter of the planet in a perverse way. But the planet wanted to kill mankind and save itself, whereas meteor would destroy the planet and so the planet wanted to stop Sephiroth. So other than saving herself, what really could change? I'm sure there is something -- I just can't think of it right now.
And Lastly, this could all be a giant set-up where the parties end up trying to re-write history even after defeating the whispers, but the result ends up being the same. Sort of a catch-22 type situation. Destiny will always prevail in some way shape or form even if the method of getting there has changed.
All in all, they have SOOO many ways of going from this and I am excited. This is definitely the best video on the topic and I 100% agree that Aerith knows what's going on here. Just not sure whether its time travel or future premonition or what. Who knows, maybe Jenova ends up being the real mastermind behind all of this somehow and is exerting influence to change the events so she could take over the world again. And by changing this timeline it will create an opening. Similar to a Calasmos DQXI type story.
I would rather it be future premonition to an extent than time travel, solely because I can't deal with another KH convoluted story line. KH made sense (although was challenging to keep up) up until DDD where the time travel ruined it.

Jessies Dad with Mako addiction was theorised to be bed ridden because his soul was caught up in the mako. which is why Jessie believes shutting down the reactors will release his soul and he can become himself again. Which is a different kind of mako reaction tahn Cloud, I believe. And if the one with sword is Cloud, it should've been a much bigger sword, when it's actually regular sized (relative to the arbiter's size) like the one Kadaj used in AC.

She also touches Cloud's face, but when Cloud tries to grab her, she turns to mako and vanishes. Maybe the Aerith we use as a character in the game, is always a "physical" representation of her will through the lifestream, from the future, and not a "real" person. I'm also thinking about chapter nine when you leave Aerith's house as Cloud without telling her or even wake her up, but she is waiting for Cloud in the way to sector 7, just where she needs to be at every time.

exactly! The ending with Aerith's face in OG finally makes sense. This was actually a continuation of the story and original is actually a vision from the Lifestream Aerith saw. That is the reason Aerith is so disturbed at the begining of the Remake, practically running away troubled with what she just saw. On the contrary, in the OG she was just calmly strolling away from the Lifestream.

  • @TimeShiftBand
    @TimeShiftBand Před 4 lety +9

I just had a sudden realisation after watching this and listening to the lyrics of the theme song "Hollow".
WHAT IF .... What if what we are experiencing is what has happened to Cloud after he fell into the life stream in original FF7?
It would make so much sense, why there are "ghosts" and they force us to follow the destiny, as it already has happened.
Also it would make sense, why Aerith knows that much, since she is already dead! (And so part of the life sream).
When we meet Aerith the first time, she gives us a flower - this time for free - and says something like "this is for rescuing me" and Cloud answer "I did that?" and she goes on "Well, then it's for the memories" (I am playing the german version, so I don't know exactly the english script).
It also would make sense, why Cloud seems to have vision of things, that will happen in the future, since they already happened - and he just remembers!
So Aertih is somehow trying to guide us out of the life stream, without loosing out mind, by making us remember.
The lyrics of "Hollow" may support this theory, as there it goes:
    Shine bright once more
    Guide me to you
    Smile bright once more
This time I will never let you go
    But I… I know
    That you’re long gone
    But I… I will…
    Go on howling and hollow
So Cloud is basically asking Aerith for help and guidance and also that he knows that she is already gone (dead) but he will go on.
The other parts of the lyrics would fit as well:
    I would be lost
    Drifting along
    Floating up high
    Time after time
    Was it all a dream?
    Will I never know?
    (for example)
What do you think about this?
I really like this idea, because it would fit the former story and there is no need to introduce something like parallel universes oder time traveling.
TL;DR: my theory - we are experiencing the things that are cloud are experiencing when he fell into the life stream, and Aerith and Sephiroth are trying influence him to get out/lost.

Honestly the confusing part is that theres been a lot of great videos discussing the ending but one overlooked part when piecing together 'evidence' seems to be the importance of the flowers (or, Aerith's touch and the flowers are essentially one and the same).
Think about how Aerith touches Cloud allowing him to see the whispers, or see 'fate' (one could view this as a typical time-travel idea of paradox, of people not being allowed to come into contact with one another, and if they do weird shit happens). She also gives him the flower, which she would know would be passed onto Tifa/Marlene/Barret, allowing them to intervene with fate-altering shenanigans. In this intro we also see a human blindly crushing a flower (pretty big symbolism). Its also an interesting point that you do not have the choice of not taking a flower, something you have agency over in the first game.
The flowers also protect Cloud when he falls through the roof of the church (something i thought they would find hard to justify if they were treated as literal flowers, but i think they have a special property). Add to this the transition scene on white background where cloud is being surrounded by flowers and petals.
Wedge comes directly into contact with Aerith, and actually tries to fight off the whispers (one might assume if he hadnt have touched Aerith, he wouldnt have been able to see them).
Jessie importantly never actually comes into direct contact with the flowers or Aerith (which may be why she is permanently dead - she was never able to 'change her fate'). However she does seem to be fighting off the Whispers outside Seventh Heaven so maybe she did.
Marlene obviously came into direct contact with Aerith, and receives a vision of the future (the past? you know what i mean).
So what about Biggs? Well, think about the importance of the orphanage - not just a sidequest sink, but you specifically have a quest in which you need to gather flowers for the orphanage (distributing that aerith's touch magic). Theres nothing to say that in the original he was taken there and died there, but perhaps he was taken there this time and survived due to the flowers either protecting him in the same way they did for Cloud's fall. Perhaps the flowers confer a kind of mini 'Planets' Protection' limit break immunity (im just kidding but also, the parallels are there)
Aerith literally talks to the flowers, even though she laughs it off. Imagine if perhaps the flowers all act as a network and she/the planet is able to protect anyone or anything that is near flowers or touching them. I believe she even says something to the effect of 'follow the yellow flowers'.
And of course there is all the extra stuff - the symbolism of the petals of the flower wilting and falling off. Marlene being 'communicated with' through the dripping flower she just watered at the end cutscene. I also think its highly likely that Aerith is only able to communicate directly with the planet when she is near flowers, maybe even specifically just the special yellow flowers. A special breed of living things that have their roots literally in the substance of the planet (maybe they're even special Cetra flowers?)
    Just sayin'

The idea of future, lifestream Aerith attempting to change the future from the original is highly plausible. The way the remake played out reminds me of the Evangelion films in the way they started off mostly following the original story, but then changing it up and introducing new elements showing that it's actually a sequel, of sorts, like a time loop.

Long ago, we looked upon a foreboding sky. The memory of the star that threatened all, burns eternal in our hearts. In its wake, came an age of silence. Yet with each fond remembrance, we knew, those encountered, where not forgotten. That some day, we would see them again. Perhaps it was no more than wishful thinking.... But after the long calm, there are now the beginnings of a stir. The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear, but let us embrace for whatever it brings. She doesn't come from the future, but she knows somehow about the future because her ability to speak with the planet, and whispers are part of the planet.
Since whispers are part of the lifestream she actually knows about them, and because of it, knows something about the future, the difference from Sephiroth is that she has not complete knowledge since she's half ancient and can't master her skills.
That's why she acts like she acts, that's why she's able to transfer knowledge (like to Red XIII) but she doesn't understand everything fully.
She's not totally aware but since she can comunicate with the planet in some way, she also knows about the whispers.

Part of fleshing out Aerith and/or Sephiroth is adding more, because they were secretive / cryptic. And with the lore and possibilities about the Lifestream, The Cetra, and perhaps even The Promised Land, that come straight from dialog in the original, fleshing that out, lends itself to this kind of storyline. It also allows them to remake the experience you had when playing the original. Let me ask you this: How angry and confused were you after part 1 of the original? Exactly...

Heard all of the theories by now (moderating the FF7R sub, so I have to read them anyway for spoilerprotecting others).
The 3 Whispers from the future are definetely not the mainparty. If they are from the future, where is the rest of the party, Cid Yuffie etc? Loz Yazoo Kadaj fit way better, in absorbing elements and weapons and logic. That means FF7AC is not gonna be canon anymore to our timeline due to the Harbingers/Whispers demise, so that means even the overall ending is open, which fits with what RedXIII said about the "bad ending" we got.
That leads to Rufus. He saw the Whispers so something is going on with him, and since FF7AC is not canon to our timeline, he can now die instead of survive.
And that leads to Aerith. It definetely creates the possibility of her surviving now if above points are correct (since she's dead in FF7AC). I hope SQEX doesn't do that, it's such a major thing.
I really hope they go with teasing us to save her when in fact it will be impossible. Just the tease of "maybe we CAN save her" with many choices in the game etc they create the illusion, and thats gonna be just as good as in the OG.

i love the stuff about marlene cuz i always felt there was something more to her in the og...i would be totally cool with some background story that dyne adopted marlene and her birth place is unknown and has ties to aerith's bloodline.
in the og they always said cetras had special connections to the planet. aerith never really got to show that off (outside of her limit breaks) BUT she was always kinda odd especially towards cloud. she does seem to have some idea in the og that she has to die imo. in the remake i think they are just expanding the fact that aerith is special through knowing more about the planet, being able to calm nanaki and show him visions by touch, and the same as marlene.

Another big thing at the end.
Recently some one did a literal translation of the Japanese version of the game.
In the English ending when Barret sees Sephiroth, he yells "HEY ASSHOLE"!
Aerith stop's him and says "Don't".
In the Japanese version Barret says "It's the guy from before"! (reference from when Sephiroth stabs him)
Aerith then says "No, it's not". (indicating no this is the real Sephiroth)
Also, in the Japanese version of the battle between Sephiroth and Cloud, Sephiroth says "Do you remember the last time Cloud"? (referring to a previous battle they have never had).
Seems it's another case of outsourced fanfic translation by Square.
Another interesting thing is during that Sepiroth battle is if Tifa enters enters the battle, Sephiroth's attitude completely changes. He goes from being giddy and full of smiles, to a scowl. He stops talking to Cloud and if you switch to Tifa he says things like "Go away". Seems like he knows just how important Tifa is.
If you switch to Aerith he will mention "You will never save him".

Usually I like to play games in their original language with subtitles but since the English version of Remake only had dubtitles, I didn't bother. Also I actually enjoyed the English cast. However I was curious about the changes for the dialogue due to the localization mainly the jokes. I don't speak Japanese but I'm fluent in Chinese so I was able to watch gameplay of the Hong Kong version of Remake which had Chinese subtitles according to the Japanese dialogue and noticed immediately a lot of differences from the English. I'll have to watch more.

@@vangmx I agree. I enjoyed what they did with the English version. I think the voice talent knocked it out of the park. I can imagine another cast doing as well.
The issue I have is when major story information gets replaced with cursing or just removing said dialogue completely.
Square has been known to have a iffy process of localization. The candidates are quite literally asked to write a fanfic from the viewpoint of a character. I think we see quite a bit of this within the English version of the remake. I don't expect it to be perfect. It's really hard to translate from Japanese to English while retaining the full meaning and context. It just sucks that we would have more answers to all of this speculation with proper localization.

@@das1549 Yeah, I totally agree. It's like what my college professor who once said, "Translation is betrayal". No matter what you do with a translation, no matter how hard you try to keep the original tone or meaning, it can't compare to actually knowing the original language, in this case, Japanese. Also, it seems some of the original script was lost during translation as you had shown in your example. Still, as a native English speaker, I highly enjoyed the English version and I think many enjoyed it too, even with some of its flaws and minor faults.

    • @goodthings2life
      @goodthings2life Před 4 lety +1

Also, I think it's less a matter of time travel as it is a power to commune to various points in time via the Lifestream, which we know Sephiroth is still a part of in some way. This will, of course, create an interesting challenge in stopping him, since we know all life returns to the planet and Lifestream when they die. How can he be killed and prevent him from joining it? Can the Lifestream reject him? I'm still curious who/what the Whispers are too... are they the planet as you suggested, or are they future versions of the main characters, or something else? For all we know, they could be Chrono, Lucca, and Marle, lol... we know they can create a mess of timelines, lololol. I guess this is why I'm excited and happy about the ending. I don't see it so much as afraid they won't kill Aerith or Zack, etc... I see it as an opportunity to expand the story universe in a creative way, and for some perspective, I'd be angry if Star Wars ended at Empire Strikes Back, Clone Wars, or Last Jedi too. (Actually I did hate Last Jedi but that's a whole other can of worms, lol.) But they don't end here... they get a cliffhanger here. The story isn't over, and I hear the arguments against Nomura, but I think it's premature to draw conclusions. At the end of the day, there's a team of people who sign off on the direction of this. It's not just one person to blame if this goes wrong, and if it does, we as fans will reject it and stick with what we love in the OG.

the life stream could be connected to all of creation and time. when teh whispers were defeated they were removed from all time. so a being in the life stream being able to communicate with a future or past self isn't too much of a strech if we go off hte idea that the life stream and the whispers were connected through time

    • @gemlynbotones3028
      @gemlynbotones3028 Před 4 lety +1

Same, at first I thought time travel here but now when you think about it, Lifestream or the afterlife is where all souls become one, whether that soul who dies from the past, the present or the future. So perhaps the future Aerith in the Lifestream has communed to her.
Lifestream is the place where all becomes one with the Planet. And I'm thinking, the Edge of Creation could be something similar to all cosmic existence. The universe was once one before it became many, different stars and life forms. The ending also makes Sephiroth knows something, the japanese dub has different translation with English.
Sephiroth in that scene now uses his pre-insanity pronoun "Ore" rather then "Watashi" when he refers to himself. He states he doesn't want to disappear nor he he wants Cloud to vanish.
Also, the seven seconds translation in Japanese says, "Seven seconds till the end, we can still make it in time. The future is up to you, Cloud."
I am guessing we will still fight Sephiroth, but there' s a bigger bad than him.

    • @enzomatik4395
      @enzomatik4395 Před 4 lety +1

Very plausible. The lifestream connects past, present and future, even different timelines. The whispers come from the planet itself afterall and they know how things are supposed to be. In the OG, Aerith sacrificed herself to save everyone and then humanity is wiped out anyway in the ending. Being the caring person she is, in this Remake, her future self has shown her through the lifestream the events and that one sole person is responsible, Sephiroth. So she is trying to, save the planet but also save humanity and quite possibly herself.
