England's Little Switzerland: Lynton, Lynmouth and Valley of Rocks (Exmoor National Park)

- Come with us as we find England's 'Little Switzerland' in North Devon! First see the victorian seaside resort of Lynton and Lynmouth before seeing the feral goats at the Valley if Rocks.
We started the day in our lovely cabin in Porlock Weir, Somerset, where we were invited to stay by The Best of Exmoor (*www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk/274... and use the code lozsleisure to get £30 off any holiday cottage stay!). After a lovely coffee with breakfast and a game of cards, we drove for around 30 minutes to Lynmouth.
We parked up for 6 hours (which cost £9) and then had a wander around the shops and Maurice Bishop's art gallery, where we lucky enough to see Maurice at work and have a little chat. We took in the scenery of 'Little Switzerland' and thought we could tell why it had earned itself that little nickname. Whilst it wasn't exactly similar... it's probably the closest we have here in England!
We grabbed a coffee down in Lynmouth before heading to the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway. The Cliff Railway is one of only three fully water-powered cliff railways in the word (there's another in Portugal and one in Switzerland, but Devon's is the steepest!) and we had a great ride up to Lynton. The journey was surprisingly fast and a little bumpy.
At the top we stopped for a picnic with a view and then took a short walk to the Valley of Rocks, where we saw the iconic feral goats that have inhabited this area for hundreds of years. We walked past the cricket pitch with phenomenal views of the valley, thought to have been carved out by the river Lyn (either as its earlier route, or when it needed to divert during the last ice age - the experts aren't sure). The valley truly is a geological marvel, and it was wonderful to think that we were actually in Devon with such striking scenery!
To get back to Lynton we took the coastal path with dramatic, sweeping views and saw some beautiful insects and, as we came back into the wooded area, some birds. It's possible to spot peregrine falcons here if you're lucky, but we didn't see them; at least we saw the goats!
After a brilliant day exploring, we made our way back into town where we got back on the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway and experienced descending to Exmouth.

Lynmouth is gorgeous. And NOT well known. I feel like even 90% of Brits aren't aware their country has this town. What a beautiful place to call home.
I think the same! It's a lovely place and we had such a good time there. The Valley of Rocks was absolutely spectacular! Thanks for stopping by 🙏
I'm a souvenir freak I'll be buying every trinket I see. ❤
Hannah and I had to stop ourselves 😂 we were going to see if we could but something from the gallery when we got back to Lynmouth but it was shut!
Been going there for over 50yrs now and never tire of it's beauty, the cliffs there are the highest sea cliffs in England.
Ooooh I've learned something new today! Thank you 😁 I can see why you wouldn't tire of them... any other recommendations for the area? Thanks for watching!
Do the walk from Lynmouth up the east lyn river to watersmeet, stop for coffee then continue on up to Rockford and on up to Brendon and keep to the left bank then return along the right bank stopping at the Rockford Inn for lunch by the water, when you leave there walk up the lane to the top of the hill and you can pick up the footpath again, a very memorable day out.@@LozsLeisure

Glad you enjoyed it, Howard! We had a brilliant day and the goats were the funniest 😂 I could have spent all day clambering at the Valley of Rocks and flying the drone too but we didn't have enough packed sandwiches for that! Mum will see this comment I'm sure but I will also pass it across. Best wishes to you from all of us and hope you are well!
