This could be the story of my Grandfathers life. He grew up on a country farm in Tennessee during the Great Depression. He joined the Marines and fought in WWII where he earned The Silver Star. He met my Grandmother after the war and she was also a Marine. They married and moved back to Tennessee and spent the rest of their lives together. The song always hits me in the heart.

jamey is truly a brilliant songwriter. He has also had the good fortune of working with some of the great old time writers in Nashville as well. This is an example of what is missing in the "new country". The new stuff is being sung by kids who have not experienced the things they try to sing about. The story is never as good when it's told by someone who hasn't lived it. i believe it was Hall of Fame songwriter Harlan Howard who said when asked to describe country music, "it's a few chords and the truth".

Jamey Johnson wrote 'Give It Away' which was a #1 hit single for George Straight. He also performed it live as a duet with Lee Ann Womack in front of Straight when he won an award for Artist of the Decade. If you see that performance and hear Lee Ann Womack's strong vocals then you'll want to hear her sing 'Does My Ring My Ring Burn Your Finger'. Another collaboration that Johnson was a part of was with Miranda Lambert on the Dierks Bentley song 'Bad Angel'. My favorite song of his would have to be 'Redneck Side Of Me' but 'Macon' comes in at a close second. He is one of the most underrated singer songwriters in Country music.

Love this song! It reminds me of the stories my Grandpa would tell me as he let me feel his beautiful snow white hair. I'd stand behind his chair and just play with his hair. His stories were amazing. He was born in 1819 and left home at thirteen because he was "now a man". My Grandma was born in 1900 and died in 2000. She had amazing stories as well. They both witnessed history being changed and every new inventions made from the car to space travel, from everything being hand made to machines doing it "faster and better".

I haven't heard this in while. His voice is pure country. I love the line "you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered". The writing is amazing. You should add Josh Turner to your list, especially Long Black Train - he has a voice that is all country as well and even deeper than Jamie's.
I understand what you mean about the old black and white pictures. We moved recently and while packing we came across some of my late grandmother's and late grandfather's and some of my late uncle's pictures, most of them in black and white. We got distracted from packing for about two hours, looking at the photographs. Seeing my grandfather and his brother in their army uniforms was something. Seeing all of the family that has passed on and pictures of those I had heard about but never met was pretty cool and my dad was able to figure out who most of the people were. Expect one. LOL. We found a picture of this movie star beautiful woman and my dad and aunt have no idea who she was. My dad decided we would just assume she was someone my uncle (who never married) had known, despite it being in my grandfather's box of pictures.
Personally, I would like to know the story behind that picture. Talk about 'you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered'.

Agree - this song's story telling did not need a video. So good all around and totally get the Taylor vibe - not the voice - but the beginning, etc.
I absolutely love old pictures and stories of a life. And funny you talked about missing out on nothing printed pics. My son is 25 now - but even when he was in high school we talked about ow technology is "stripping" history in the making. No more finding docs or pictures left behind. I have a few floppy disks I will never be able to get those documents and images from unless I find somewhere that can retrieve them. From the day of my son's birth - I bought newspapers of major events in His life - like 9/11 - death of Princess Diana etc. Sad that newspapers no longer highlight as much as they used to. Especially where I live - small town and ONLY local papers are sold. Fortunately my son cherishes history and family heirlooms - there is something to be said for having things on paper and not just digital that can be lost in time as technology changes. Many old shows and classic movies are disappearing as they are not being converted now ... plus.. always nice to open photo albums and look back..

Huh. This isn't a song that I'd think lends itself to Kid Rock's style. But then, few realize how versatile KR can really be. Dude's a legit musician. - Keith

So excited you checked out Jamey Johnson, he doesn't get enough credit. This song was kinda his more commercial song I would say. This is what grabbed the attention of country fans but you got to check out his other music that is on this album, every song is an absolute hit in my opinion. One of my favorites is Between Jennings and Jones!!!

Totally agree about watching videos for song reactions. It taints it and forces meaning and context as opposed to letting your imagination do it. I don't think any of the reaction channels should ever watch the video. Just listen to the song and base your opinion on that.
