Wow. First time I disagree with a vets response to the spay question, I’m so glad my vet keeps up with newer studies etc covering this subject and doesn’t advocate spaying puppies at 6 mo. She likes them to be finished growing . 👏👏👏

Interesting. I’ll need to look into this. Thanks for sharing. Do you know when she recommends then?

Yes, I've been told the same thing-wait until around a year. But conventional wisdom keeps telling me 6 mos

I came back from the vet today and she said there are "two schools of thought" for when is the earliest time to spay. Basically either before first heat, or two months after first heat. She listed pros and cons for both and said she doesn't push for either way and would support my decision. Now I'm left internet searching to figure it out.

Thanks for the video Donnie. Lots of great info as usual and very timely for my Boston Daisy as she is scheduled for the procedure in two weeks.
Dr. Reinhard presented a lot of very good information. When I asked my vet about the best time to spay, I was told before the first heat cycle if we didn't want to deal with that. However, the veterinary community is rather split about waiting at least one heat cycle due to the possibility of reducing growth hormones until full maturity is reached. The growth hormones are necessary for full skeletal development thus reducing risks of hip dysplasia, luxating patella etc. We were also cautioned that spaying after the first heat cycle slightly raises the chances for mamary tumors.
Once again thanks for posting the topic.

Thanks for sharing yes, that is true and the AVMA doesn’t even put out specifics in which I could find. It is definitely a case by case situation and up to someone’s individual vet. Like I said we waited a few heat cycles with Bella but it was because we were thinking about beeeding her but then decided not to.

I get my baby Boston in two weeks and found this video trying to find out what will be best for her, It would be interesting to find out if Boston's have finished growing if they get spayed at 6 months. I read that getting spayed too early (as in 6 - 11 months even) can affect a Bostons form from fully developing (they could have longer legs than they should meaning not in proportion & have and less square head for the breed standard) Other articles say to do before she goes into heat as in this video (so as soon as, around that 6 months mark) is more healthy? So still a bit unsure, if anyone knows more about getting that balance between them finishing growing and avoiding health risks highlighted it'd be great to find out more! :)
