Peter Salovey and John Mayer offered a number of definitions of Emotional intelligence. Here's one:
‘the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.’
They see emotions as useful sources of information that can help us make sense of social behaviors and navigate our social environment
They created a model of Emotional Intelligence with four abilities:
    1. Perceiving emotions
    2. Understanding emotions
    3. Managing emotions
    4. Using emotions
The difference between Salovey and Mayer’s model and Goleman’s arises from their desire to show that EI is a true intelligence. This gives rise to specific abilities, or aptitudes, that you can develop and harness for practical purposes.
Goleman’s four or five competencies are more like practical skill sets that we can develop and put immediately to use.
This is why, whilst the Salovey and Mayer model is considered to be robust in its interpretation of emotional ability, it is not as useful in a work setting as Goleman’s - and so far less widely known.

Salovey and Mayer's approach to understanding and categorizing Emotional Intelligence is not well known. But it does make a lot of sense and will help you to think about EI from another point of view.

Just a small point. I knew Peter Salovey in grad school. His name is pronounced Salovey, with the accent on the 1st syllable. It’s shortened from Saloveichik. He comes from a well-known rabbinical family.
