- Daniel Goleman brought emotional intelligence to the public’s attention with his massive 1995 best seller, ‘Emotional Intelligence’.
He followed this up with two further books that deserve to be read by all serious managers:
• Working with Emotional Intelligence (1998)
• The New Leaders (2002)

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your own and other people’s emotions and feelings.
Goleman: managers with higher levels of emotional intelligence can be more effective and objective, because of their self-awareness and self-control. This can promote a more productive workplace.
Goleman’s five Emotional Intelligence skills.
1. Self-Awareness - the foundation for Self-Regulation
2. Self-Regulation - helps you get the best from yourself
3. Motivation - ability to motivate yourself - later subsumed into self-regulation.
4. Empathy - the foundation for Social Skills
5. Social Skills - help you get the best from others
There is a range of measurement tools based on the Goleman model of EI:
1. The Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI)
2. The Emotional and Social Competence Inventory (ESCI)
3. The Emotional and Social Competence - University Edition (ESCI-U)
4. The Emotional Intelligence Appraisal
