- Just a short rant on the importance of being considerate when raising, training, and managing, dogs.
I hope you guys enjoy!
This channel is devoted to providing a window into the life of professional dog trainer, Stonnie Dennis. I talk about dog training, boarding, health, equipment, and all the things that go into owning and running a successful dog training and boarding kennel.
At our kennel we place special emphasis on helping dogs reach their full potential through the use of physically and mentally demanding activities. Our primary goal is to help families raise happy, healthy, well socialized, canine companions.
We especially love training Labrador Retrievers, so don't be surprised when you see Labs of every age, size, shape, and color!!!

Thank you Stonnie. I agree! Individuals do not deserve to have a pet if they cannot take personal responsibility for their behavior. It tells you a lot about the individual if they are not willing to take the time and effort!
Everbody has the same 24 hours, modeling behaviours, you are the defintion of a great trainer ! I really appreciate the time and effort you invest in these videos. By the by, there may be other trainers, but you frankly, are in a class of your own.
Sorry I barely heard a word you said Mr. Dennis.
Watching you work that dog was just amazing. Smooth, effortless, casual yet so much teaching, bonding, and foundation building. Always an honor watching you work a dog.
My black lab Tara is now 2,5 years old.
I used to watch Stonnie's videos constantly before having Tara with us and I have been following Stonnie's tips till today. And she has turned into a superstar dog. Best dog ever. Great with the family and a fun animal in the field. We are so proud of her.
If you are new dog owner, looking for advice to train your dog, just follow this channel's tips. Here you have everything you need. He's a professional dog trainer and his thecniques are real gold.
Thanks for you dedication Stonnie.
Thanks!
I had a chocolate lab that was 132 pounds. She was a BIG girl and looked like a grizzly bear. She took up my whole living room floor when she decided to lay in the middle of my living room. Anyways, I adopted her so I wasn’t sure quite how she would respond to the mailman and meter reader. I forgot she was in the yard one day because I was cleaning and I suddenly heard my gate open. It was the guy here to read the meter and he didn’t know that I had gotten a dog. I panicked and ran outside. She didn’t even bark at him. She wandered over to see if he would pet her while he was in her yard. I caught the meter reader talking baby talk and rubbing her belly. But she reacted totally different one night at 11pm when some man opened the gate and walked into the yard while she was out to potty. She went ballistic and chased him down the driveway. She stopped the chase and came right to me when I called her back. That man sure was running fast though!!!! Also, someone tried to break into my house and she scared him off. I think she knew who was supposed to be there and who wasn’t.
Thanks a lot from Ecuador, the world really needs to hear this kind of massages!
Ecuador? Dang, nice...
Very nicely said. Thanks for your online contributions. Happy Easter!
Awesome Stonnie! A good kick in the butt to all of us dog owners. Happy Easter to you and yours.
Thanks Stonnie, I struggle sometimes with my pup, he’s about 19 weeks now, a Norfolk Terrier. We’re having a house refurb, planning a wedding and both working. I go to bed early and get up at 4:30 am and get my pup out for walks and training. Someone comes in during the day and my fiancé does his evening walk. I don’t see how people get a puppy and then don’t put in the work - you wouldn’t expect a kid to grow up well with no fulfilment so why expect that from a dog?
That being said, I had a bit too much wine on Friday and didn’t get up early on Saturday but pup was forgiving and sat in the garden all day with me until I recovered! I still felt guilty as hell though - which was rightly deserved!
Thank you Stonnie you always give such great advice.
We all struggle; me especially. All you can do is get up everyday and focus on making incremental improvement!
Love this so much! Soo much truth in this!! No excuse whatsoever! Thank you Stonnie what doing what you do!
Absolutely phenomenal video Stonnie. People definitely needed to hear this. You're such an inspiration.
Thank you for watching!
Great message. Thanks Stonnie!
Don't bite the mailman, no excessive barking, refrain from jumping up on strangers, and pick up your dogs mess when in public! Good manners go a long way!! Gday Stonnie ☉
Civil society is based on simple actions...
Hey Stony, I started watching your videos about two months ago, to learn how to train my pup. Now a days I just watch them all because I like how you do your videos. I’ve learnt so much and I’ll probably re visit a few vids to get more out of them. All the way from tasmania, Australia.
Thank you for making this video.
People need to take care
Thank you, Stonnie. I needed this.
Great video, Stonnie, thank you! Happy Easter to you and your family!
Thank you!
Another spot on video. Inspired by you we now have a obstacle course on our deck. Thanks so much for sharing such great info in a clear and understandable way.
Thanks for watching!
Happy Easter weekend Stonnie! And fyi, we call those ppl lazy where I'm from..
Happy Easter to you as well. I agree with your general assessment concerning lazy people....
Great message here. Love your videos!
Stonnie you are friggin awesome !!!.
Great piece of property and another insightful video, thanks, Stonnie.
GREAT Message!!
I personally love that my Ruby barks and growls at anyone that comes close to the house. I dont care if its the meter reader or the mail person. How ever I also teach my Ruby to calm down and be friendly when I tell her to. I personally tell Ruby good girl anytime she barks when someone comes onto the front porch, but after a few warning barks I tell her its ok and soon as she calms back down she gets a reward.
How about when you are not at home? What precautions do you take to make sure she doesn't get herself into a bad situation with, for example, the mailman?
We live in an apartment, so sometimes there is repair and maintenance work being done in the apartment when we are not there, could your dog handle a stranger letting themselves in to change filters in your vents? Could she be trained to handle it?
@@emmamemma4162 I do not really have any precautions while I am away other than beware of dog signs. Even when I lived in apartments I never allowed people into my apartment unless I was there.
Yes she could be taught to handle strangers coming into the house. How ever I personally would never do that. I like having a good guard dog. But if knew of someone that I absolutely trusted with my place while I was gone I would simply have that person over a few times so the dog can get used to that person being allowed in the house.
@@emmamemma4162 and thank you for the question.
@@PawsuasiveDogTeaching Thank you for answering! We have a different situation with lots of different people in and around our apartment (kids bringing home classmates, lots of people walking by our house), so our dog is being taught to accept everyone. Luckily she is not a guarding breed, so we don't expect to run into trouble with her.
@@PawsuasiveDogTeaching Having a "good guard dog" that was never taught to use discernment is not a good guard dog. I am a petite 5' woman and love powerful breeds, too, three gorgeous shepherds. But I go out of my way to teach good judgement skills to all my dogs, even to my little chihuahua. Here's a couple of reasons:
Consider, firstly, that most people are not would-be threats. Seriously look back over your entire lifetime and know that the majority you've encountered are just everyday folk.....and that for the most part....just *the look of a powerful breed* is enough deterrent....without any barking at all. However, bad actors casing your living arrangement, seeing a well-trained Ruby might skip your house for an easier target......or bring a gun, knife, poison, etc., and eliminate her life to solve the issue. So much for protection. But oh you still like a guard dog who barks at strangers...for your safety, right?
So, let's say you suffer a serious slip and fall in your shower. Just before you succumb to injury of a broken back, snapped neck, and/or concussion....you have the wherewithall to tap 911 on your cellphone. Now EMT, or whatever rescue, comes to your door. But because you have not taught discernment to Ruby, they are forced to shoot her to save your life. So much for protection, right?
Please consider these types of scenarios. Ruby is beautiful!
Well said Stonnie.
I am stopping on by to show some love to your channel
Happy Easter , Stonnie!!
Happy Easter to you as well!
Excellent work my friend
Insane that this even has to be said. But a whole lot of impatience and insecurity has brought us to it. Keep getting that message out. happy Easter.
Happy Easter to you as well!
goodonya Stonnie , hope you and family enjoy Easter , Burt, Australia.
Happy Easter to you Burt!
Hey Stonnie, I've been binge-watching your videos and this one really spoke to me. I'm a dog walker, and the number of dogs I walk that are under-socialized or under-exercised is insane, and it has put me into dangerous situations before (especially large dogs pulling me into traffic because they're chasing a squirrel or a dog across the street or whatever it is. I'm 130lbs soaking wet, so I can only physically control them so much). Some of my clients seem to think I have a magic technique that will keep their dogs from chasing things, and sure, I have a couple of tricks that work in the short term, but their owners really need to work more with them to address and minimize these kinds of behaviours. The number of times I'll hear, "Yeah, I skipped Spot's morning walk because I knew you were coming," which leaves me to deal with a dog that's bouncing off the walls from boredom, is so, so frustrating.
Anyway, I really appreciate your videos. Thank you for your work!
I feel you. People take advantage of groomers and dog walkers all the time. As you gain experience and build a clientele, then ditch those bum owners as soon as possible!
Thanks I think I needed that!
You are welcome!
Well said Uncle Stonnie: there is a blatant lack of respect in general, however, in the dog world, dogs appear to be more unruly than they were 20 years' ago!
Proud of you... and the especially the dog, seeming to ignore in the rain!
If it ain't raining, we ain't training...
stonie , im getting a puppy this week, im wondering about where the puppy sleeps at night? crate?
I would also add don't let the perfect be the enemy of the pretty good. I don't have a ton of time right now, but I do invest about an hour a day and have had pretty good results. Not perfect, but pretty good and we will build it better as time allows. Good video.
Strive for incremental improvement!
I can only imagine how stressful those sorts of jobs must be when you have to worry about your own safety! Rain, shine or blizzard we have to get out and work. I adopted a malinois rescue who needs a lot of work and she has certainly trained me just as much! I have found that my dog has actually helped me manage my time because I know she is priority, and I have to work her into my schedule no matter what which means I have to be on top of it with my many other tasks.
I hope your kids are this lucky Stonnie.
We have a dog that under socialised we listened to the vet who told us not to let him out then hes been attacked so many times by other dogs mostly off lead dogs but some on lead we are muzzle training him hes being trained all the time with a mix of playtime to but my question is with all of this as hes reactive at times how can I socialise him safely theres been other issues along the way hes nearly 5 and I really want him to have doggy friends any help would be appreciated 😊I do read and watch you tube etc but I dont know which way to go
I live in a rural area and people out here think that they aren't responsible for keeping their dogs in their yards, and that anything the dog does off their property isn't their problem.
Great video 👍 We have a 8 month old Labrador retriever . He is doing great , but hates stairs and doesn't bark . He comes from a great breeder and we give him all of our free time . He goes to work with my wife every day and is great with the handycap adults she takes care of . Any suggestions 🐕🐕🐕
I’m not reading any problems, except maybe the stairs?
@@KR-os6nn This was an old comment . Buckley is now three . He's a sweet boy . Still hates the stairs , still doesn't bark . Goes into downward dog if you want to kiss him and pulls hard when we walk him four miles every night . But that's Buckley ... We love him so much 😊 .
My dog is smarter than me. Taught me how to walk on a leash and to let him off the leash now he has me taking him to people places like the gym (me on the leash).
A rescue of aprox 6 yrs old, turns out an english lab and huge! 95lbs and assessed by a trainer to be of legit blood and passes tolerances tests like stepping on toes or bumping into etc to check re activeness and nope he is good!
I got him from chasing squirrels to loving them. He walks off leash in city centre no prob. Best dog ever from Austin Humane Society. My foster to adopt and well...we got him from tethered to a fence his whole life until rescued to a proper service dog now. Proper breed this. You did a video of the differences with English and Black and so he is as you say that fat chubby but grown up. He does get a lot of exercise but by incentive yes. They love to eat and mine in on an organic dehydrated food, The Honest Kitchen brand. Thanks for the videos.
I should add. Sadly they took off his junk. He is a huge, massive, muscular (we exercise daily. I have his sit/stay I walk far away then call and he bolts about 150 yards over a grass area on our route. So sad as he is so handsome and big and would have made great puppies.
He is very loved in my neighborhood. He goes to the gym, to the shops to my work etc. Best dog ever (every other dog owner would be correct in objecting as theirs is best but so be it).
He lived tied to a tree for 5 years in taylor tx. Now he is perfection. Walks anywhere sans leash (I use the leash where people are near) but on our early morning walks to the gym etc no need and on busy roads. 10 squirrels and 5 coyotes couldn't make him bolt. He is so solid. Like that chubby baby on the kayak the white one. Same as my dog.
Let me say that yes they would prefer to sit and watch the others run about etc. Yes. Super chill but yes they will perform and can be kept in top shape with muscles and such. They just ain't so antsy and yes they are super handsome. My dog is Handsome!! Huge English Lab, big big head. Huge Paws! Big Muscles! He is a member of a pack which includes two tiny black pugs. A happy pack.
Sub! Great video! Thanks
What kind of treats do you use?
Braxton R. He uses their kibble.
My neighbors had a beautiful large dog. It got lose and went to attack the mailman. It was the poor dogs third strike. These idiots got two more large puppies and literally everyday every night their left on their own . It’s heartbreaking.
It can be tough to train for strangers coming into your yard when it doesn't happen that often, but in that case you can at least keep your dog restrained. There are a number of people in my neighborhood that just let their dogs roam around and they run up to us and bark aggressively at times and it's just pathetic on the part of the dog owner. We even had to get animal control to remove one dog that would chase our dogs and bit at least two people and the owner still just let it roam around until it was taken away.
While I agree it's important to socialize your dog, no one should be in my yard when I am not home. Our power company etc....make an appointment with us. Our German Shepherd love people. But they are also very hesitant to enter our yard. He is perfectly fine when we are there and introduce people to him. But if you come into our home at night...you are in serious trouble. We found this out when a neighbors friend tried to enter late at night. Well actually early morning around 4am. He trapped her between our storm door and the heavy wooden doors. Had my son not been up I know she would have been bitten pretty severe. That is our dogs job in our home. He is the first line of defense.
Stonie, what all are you wearing and carrying?
You are responsible for your dog, one way or the other you need to make sure it doesn't cause trouble.
If you don't put the work in early that might mean having to physically contain it, muzzle it, keep it on lead all the time etc.
That's no fun for anyone involved, least of all the dog.
Stonie can You answer why a people will not get obedience on there dogs?
Are they afraid of ruining the dogs mind?
We all see people with dogs that run away and chase everything.
We live in a society where simple immediate self gratification and emotion based thinking have superseded ethics, morality, responsibility, logic, and evidence...
Can you train my 🐕 I live in New Jersey
If you go to Kentucky he will.
Video summary: get your shit together people.
From8 weeks I have worked with my now 3 yr old lab mix . She is well trained and I do remote hand signals and a lot distraction training. She goes to day care too just to play with other dogs a few times a month. We did puppy social and training early. Yet she acts like aggressive when she on our side of the door. But when people visit she wants to sniff them and does the lab thing. We always wonder what we were not here and someone walks into our yard. This has happened when we were and she do a down stay and easy sniff command . She acts the same way when inside our car. She went to pet stores even yesterday . Is this aggressive postering in her territory normal. Do I need todo something.she camps a lot with us and let’s people pet her once I tell her easy . A command to be gentle and the person is okay.
What would be your advice when neighbors’ dogs continually come into your yard and run after/jump all over your kids, leave “messes” behind 💩😷, dig in your flower/vegetable gardens...? It is so awkward to have to be all, “Hey, can you take care of your dog...again?!” It seems like it should be common sense and common courtesy, but apparently it isn’t. I’d love to hear any advice or tips you have in handling these reoccurring situations diplomatically!
LOL...I’m from Kentucky, I don’t know how to handle things diplomatically....
Talk to them first. If that doesn't work, pick up the neighbor's dog poop and place it directly on their doorstep. It won't happen again!
@@cmsbeth lol put it in a paper bag set it on fire knock on the door and run to hide so u can watch them stomp it out. that'll fix them.
Call Animal Control in your community. I called and complained about a cat that would come onto my property and fight and injure my cat. Animal Control said they could help. They brought over a trap and in a couple days we caught the culprit. If someone is not controlling their animal, I would think Animal Control would be able to intervene - maybe warning the owners, giving them resources for training or controlling their pet, etc. You don’t have to take care of this yourself.
Animal control...that is usually the only way to get their attention. 99% of the time it works because animal control considers it a health/safety issue. They will escalate the situation if needed.
can I have that dog?
As a female, my dogs are my first line of defense with an intruder. My P365 is the second. Utility workers, police , the mailman, or even a neighbor shouldn’t step foot on my property unless invited. Isn’t the utilities folks, required to contact a property owner before entering.? The easement doesn’t allow them to enter unannounced. I agree, when in my presence my dog is to respect the utility guys/gals, my neighbor, mailman, or the police. And thanks for the kick in the butt to get out there in the rain. No excuses.!!!!
I think he just used the utility guy as an example but alot of city folks live in highly populated areas and are lazy when it comes to owning dogs which results in poorly trained or not trained at all dogs, which can lead to dog bites if not properly socialized. Any Personal protection dog should be trained by a professional that will show the dog and help the dog recognize a good person from a bad person and not just bite anyone that comes into the yard. Having a fully trained PPD is more controllable as well and more predictable than a loose cannon.
I also am a female with firearms and wants to get a German Shepherd for a Personal Protection dog.
@Tracy Black ...as a petite female, who could be easily mistaken as a soft target, I love powerful breeds, and love my guns, too. But I make sure my three shepherds, and even my little chihuahua, are taught discernment. They do not bark or growl at strangers because the majority of people are not a danger-----and just the look of a well-trained powerful breed is enough deterrent to most bad actors, without any barking at all. Bad actors would most likely move on to an easier target.
But let's say an intruder targets my house regardless of my dogs. All s/he would need is a gun silencer, knife, poison, etc., to complete the mission. So what, you might think. Sure my Colt 1911 is still available. But I've lost my dogs. No amount of justice could replace them. And because an intruder is most prob'ly NEVER gonna happen anyway....I employ security technology over my home and do not consider my dogs as first line of defense.
Do not forget that whitehats may need to come to your home unannounced. EMT, or whatever rescue, one day may need to break into your home and save your life! Let's say you suffered a slip and fall while you were in the shower and broke your back, snapped your neck, and/or open-fractured your head. Just before succumbing, you had the where-with-all to tap 911 on your cellphone then blacked-out due to injury. But then your PPD refuses intruders, right? This is what I mean by teaching discernment....keeping these kinds of scenarios as more likely to happen than a blackhat event.
By looking back over the entirety of your lifetime, you know most people are not blackhats. Whitehats are the 'good guys' and/or gals.....who would be forced to shoot your dog.....to save your life. Heartbreaking!!
Please consider teaching good judgement skills to your dogs, they have the ability for discernment and it's beautiful. God bless you, your dogs, and your guns!!
I get the point of the video, but 99% of dog owners don't have a dog training facility in their backyard and 20 other already perfectly social dogs to model after.
I had nice dogs well before I had a nice facility. There’s no excuse not to put in the work.
