The Lancia team were such pirates. I love how they did every thing they could think of to stack theirs in their favor- using ice melt on the course, changing tires mid race, etc. This was when motor racing was exciting and brash.

I mean...they did walk the edge between cheating and ingenuity. However, many people don't realize that everybody did. Few got caught. Only difference - Lancia used to cheat in their own very unique and crazy way. Just like everything they've ever done.

I couldn't agree more, since NASCAR used to be the same way. The 60s and 70s were the big experimentation years, everyone seeing what they could get away with. It probably all came to a head with the Plymouth Superbird of 1970, going 200mph in the days when its competition struggled for 160mph.
But following the oil crisis and a string of deaths, cars got slower, restrictions got tighter, and now, thanks to foreign meddling, the loudest motorsport short of drag racing is little more than a spec race.

Ferrari is not anymore in FCA since 2016 and it worked alone anyway every year, Maserati took from Ferrari and Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio don't share a single bolt with the group (also the really bad one is the MiTo, the Giulietta is still ok), the group didn't put any money in Lancia in the last years and now it sells only one comfy (in Lancia's style) car only in Italy and the end of the life of the Ypsilon could well represent the end of this historic brand.

@@Dragoneer Yeah they are good at making ads for their cars (for example the one with the Chiron in front of the Golf going into a garage, with the kid looking at it being amazed, to remind that VW "makes" that too, infact kids usually are all for Bugatti while the adults tend to prefer more the Koenigsegg, and this actually reflects onto the people who think on stereotypes too, so the blind VAG fanboys) and pay magazines, but before those they did nothing but copy the italian rivals and examples aren't missing at all.
That's how they monopolized the european car market, with ok cars (because their cars are not that bad, they make good cars anyway) and brainwashing, but nothing exceptional on the last one when you think that Volkswagen is the work of Adolf Hitler himself.

One of the best TGT or TG skits ever.
Interestingly one bit of info wasn't mentioned. The tyre size rule was quizzed by Lancia if they could fit wider rear tyres and thinner front tyres keeping the same total contact area, being of course more suitable for the RWD cars, but this logical proposal was declined. They may have been competitive for another year had the FIA allowed it.
