    Why do you believe the ancient Valyrians practiced intermarriage? Do you think this is the best way for the Targaryens to protect themselves as the last dragonriders? Let me know your thoughts and questions below! 🐲🔥 #houseofthedragon #hotd

    Magic is strong when Targareyan's inbreed but "whenever a Targareyen is born the world holds their breathe ". They exist on a razors edge.

      That's because mental and psychological handicaps, and even physical handicaps are also "strong" and/or inevitable traits of inbreeding. And few things are more terrifying than powerful wielders of magic going mad/insane.

    To consolidate power and to restrict outside influence. If the ability to ride dragons is a genetic trait than it makes sense you would want to make sure that ability stays within the family. Dragons are their claim to power. Also, if you marry a person from a different noble house, they bring along the aspirations and ambition of that family. Prime example are the Hightowers. I always wondered why royal families in real life used to marry their own cousins but this show definitely helped me realize why. We get distracted by the incest of it all. If I am a queen marrying off my son to a woman who will one day replace me in precedence, I could see the benefit of choosing a bride that is kin to me and used to me holding authority over them. In the case of Alicent, marrying her daughter to her son maintains her control and influence over both of them. As strong as Cersei was, Margery was slowly but surely chipping away at her hold over her son.

      @@manueldeltoro9944 probably to keep the "holy blood" or whatever equivalent exist in that country.
      The reason for marrying royals to royals was to keep the "good" blood or the "chosen by God" in the seat and ofc, to keep money and wealth building upwards and not falling down. You cannot expect a random peasant who has no house or money to contribute to the country's wealth or the holy grip on the country.
      You can see it often in history that rulers are rulers by "divine right" as if they were chosen by God and not by men. Royals are holier than a peasant so they cannot be removed from power.
      Robert, in game of thrones, has a targeryan grandmother and that probably soothed some nerves among the peasants and other royal houses, since he isn't new to the royal throne, he is simply the royal winner of the royal War.
      With the targeryans, they gained rule by taking a divided land and insisted they were godly and therefore the God-given rulers (just like many examples from real life). Their children are divine and therefore the future rulers and so on

    Its pretty easy. The Dragons were domesticated when Sheperds from Valyria encounter them: 40 families found them and managed to do blood magic rituals to tie themselves and their descendants to those Dragons. Controlling dragons soon meant inmense power to those 40 families. Thus they only marry among themselves because only them were able to ride dragons and they did not want this ability to spread out of the 40 nobles families that formed the original elite. After the doom, only the Targaryens among the 40 families survived with dragons, this meant that now, they had to breed among themselves in order to keep the dragonrider blood within their own family.

    Excellent video! I love how this show is showing us hints and traces of Valyrian culture that time and time again seem to be hinting it an ancient dragon rider civilization in the far east (the Empire of the Dawn). I hope that one day that lore is expanded, made cannon, and we get to learn in detail about where even the founders of the Valyrian freehold came from!

    Some people point to Maegor's series of failed attempts to produce an heir with non-Targaryens as evidence that blood of the dragon people produce more failed pregnancies with non-blood of the dragon partners. But personally I think, in Maegor's case specifically, the monstrous results of his many partners' pregnancies are caused by Maegor himself being brought into the world with the help of dark magic.

    • @FeyFire
      @FeyFire  Před rokem +9

      I think Maegor's wives would have all produced monstrous offspring - however I think Alys Harroway may have been successful if not for being poisoned by Tyanna. (I have a "Strong" suspicion there is something special about the Targs breeding with those who live near the God's Eye.)

    My theory is the Valyrians weren't negatively affected by inbreeding in the way that normal people are because of the magic of Valyria. The same reason they have metallic hair and purple eyes, ability to bond with dragons, high heat tolerance, and immunity to common illness. Because it had no ill effects on them, they used it as a way to keep all the wealth and power within the same families.
    However, after Valyria was destroyed and the Targaryens were left in Westeros, they started to lose the magical protection and become more like normal people, they started to get sick and see the negative effects of inbreeding.

  • @Laramaria2
    @Laramaria2 Před rokem +1

    I saw a theory that Targaryens have two special abilities in their blood: dragon dreams and hatching eggs without rituals. The idea of the Targaryens staying with their own is to keep those two abilities (dreamers and hatchers) to their own and make harder for dragons to be born to other families, as they would need to perform rituals but if you are a hatcher, your dragon will pretty much be born to you, like Baela's, Jace's, Luke's and Joffrey's (they did nothing, they had a dragon egg there and it simply hatched). So even with other families having dragons, the Targaryens would probably have more as they would have an easier time bringing them to life.
    It's a weird theory, yet I kinda like it 🤭

    You keep saying the Valeryons have the purest Valerian blood. But they havea history of also outmarrying a lot more then the Targareyans. I mean in the show they are mixed race so clearly something is up cause the Targareyans (who also descend from Valeryons) are all completely white. It is safe to say only one of Daemons children could dragon ride. The other couldn't because of non Valerian blood. The other could because as you said the chances decrease for more genetically diverse offspring but it can still happen. Even Rhaenyra wasn't 'pure' and neither were her children by the Strong guy.

    • @FeyFire
      @FeyFire  Před 8 měsíci

      The Velaryons are black because the Valyrian Freehold was massive and spanned the continent of Essos, therefore was far more racially diverse than Westeros. Not because of intermarrying with another Westerosi house.
      The Velaryons also kept their marriages close, and tried to marry the Targaryens as often as possible. Corlys and Rhaenys, Alyssa and Aenys, even Aegon the Conqueror was half Velaryon. This is how their family gained the dragon riding genetic into their bloodline. They were never natural dragon riders.

    • @jamiemohan2049
      @jamiemohan2049 Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@FeyFirebut them being another race makes no sense. Sure the Valyrians ruled a diverse empire. That doesn't mean all Valyrian citizens were equal. The natives of Valyria would be considered actual ethnic Valyrians and that is what it means to keep the bloodline pure. Valerians are pale, silver haired and can have purple eyes. They are also essentially their own race obsessed with purity. They are like the ancient version of Nazis. Do you honestly think foreign nations were considered Macedonians after Alexander the great conquered them? No, so it makes no sense at all. They coulda race swapped another family. Not one that is supposed have clearly stated physical traits who are obsessed with Valyrian features and abilities. The dragon Lords and native Valyrians rarely mixed with outsiders till the fall of Valyria. It is like saying a German who has Roman citizenship would be considered an Ethnic Roman or native roman, he doesnt have actual roman blood. In Rome they just would not have been considered proper Romans. Just makes no sense and in the books all Valyrians or 'pure' bloods have silver hair, pale skin and can but not always have purple eyes. Clearly they mean being pure Valyrian in the ethnic sense. Even after the fall of Valyria many Valeryians only married Valeryians in Volantis and Lys to preserve their Valeryian ethnic features. This wasnt even so they could dragon ride as many couldn't, just for their distinct features. They didnt wanna mix with the natives despite these regions also being part of the Valyrian Empire before the fall. So people who were not native to Valyria but under their rule were just not true Valeryians. In the books the Valeryons have typical Valeryian feautures so clearly didnt marry outsiders often. Even when they did the next few generations after would always marry ethnic Valyrians. Just think it is silly that in the show that a family who are supposed to be essentially racial supremacists and a race of their own are very mixed race. Makes no sense at all. Just not the best family to race swap. Coulda did it with another family not them. Just hilarious watching Viserys talk about Valeryian purity with a dude who is clearly only part Valyrian. You saying the empire is diverse doesnt mean anything since the Valeryrian were alwas obsessed with their own race and didnt want to mingle with outsiders. They definitely wouldnt have diversified at all just like real life aristocratic families in history. Fairly innacurate of the show to diversify and humanise a bunch of racial supremacists instead of just showing us what they are supposed to be like.

    I find it very rude that people continue to bash Alicent for her actions while immediately forgeting her up bring situation. It is Otto's fault that she married Viserys to begin with. Other than that, all Alicent does is what she believes to be her duty. Viserys may have decided to proclaim Rhaenyra his heir, but there is a WILD hypocrisy in doing that. Viserys is king only because another woman were not allowed to rise to the Iron Throne.
    The king may be creating a legal precedent that monarchs may not have the right and legal power to. The lords and ladies of Westeros pledged to Rhaenyra before even the idea of a new prince being born be a considerable possibility. The situation has however changed, legal advice must be reconsidered and revalidated. The dance of the dragons is such a hot mess of a historical event because both heads of both sides are equally right and wrong at the same time. Just look at the results, the extinction of dragons for about 200(?) years.
    Also, Viserys holds a piece of extremelly important information that could change the course of westerosi History if shared. We, the viewers know what Aegon's dream meant, do one else in that world during Visery's reign could ever know that as well without the sharing of said information. So, even if the King was right to concede the throne to his only pured blooded daughter, we CAN NOT shit on Alicent for not taking into consideration a piece of infromation that literally no one else posesses. HAd Alicent known that she would probably respect the king's decision, after all, in the show, she is all about fully performing her duties.
    Rhaenyra is an heir apparent who were intending on setting bastards up to the throne. To be able to pull some shit like taht, as a monarch, you must either not get caught or win a fierce war on matter first. Rhaenyra has done neither of those. Monarchs don't rule alone and she can't not disrespect the law.
