You just have to *train* your mind to set the slots. I'll have to *tank* trupen for this video.
I have almost 900 hours in this game and I didn't know you could reserve inventory slots! That's so useful!

if you know what it is you can search in the crafting menu and it will be highlighted in your inventory
I usually look at my inventory, see the thing I need is missing, handcraft it and then see the flashing icon and realise I already had it, but just didn't see it

If you're on a laptop and don't have a middle mouse button, you can go into the settings and remap the reserve slot key.

what do you recommend remapping it to that isn’t already in use?

just had the worst day ever, i accidentaly locked every slot in my pockets to only hold dust, and then my middle mouse button broke so theyre useless...
wait nevermind i can just pick them up and put them back down again to reset it

i love using the factorissimo mod to make Chests in my building and put it in my pocket for a massive portable inventory

Huh, when di they add this feature? I remember having to add sorter arms on my trains, and if I wanted to multi-load, I'd just tell the train to leave the station at a specific load level.

I literally bought a mouse specifically for filters
On Linux clicking left and right mouse button at the same time acts as middle click. I never tried with Factorio but I'd be surprised if it didn't work.
The joke about not having middle mouse button hurt me a bit :(

Jokes on you. My laptop DOES HAVE a middle mouse button!
P.S. Setting basic resources as trash and having auto-resupply can save you a lot of pain navigating in the maze you lot call FACTORY.

If you're on a trackpad you're probably better off playing a different game
