What did you think of Black Widow?
Except the taskmaster reveal, movie is good.
Your mama 😉
I thought I wasn't going to like this movie very much because it received so many mediocre reviews, but I actually liked it a lot! I kept thinking about it hours later.
Havent seen it yet 😫
Mediocre
This movie made me so sad, especially the end credit scene. Finally when Nat reunited with her sister, she dies and now Yalena is whistling alone 🥺
I don't think she'll kill Hawkeye or Kate. Maybe she'll learn the truth
@@azneph611 she definitely won’t. I am pretty sure it was confirmed she will be in the Hawkeye series so I guess we will get to see how it all goes down
@@gracedicken8708 i think this will be a side story in the first season of Hawkeye, he will have to make Yalena understand who Natasha was and what happened, but this will take a long time and a couple episodes. Maybe by the end of the season she will help in the final fight as a new person, free from her past.
@@petergohan I hope that is what she does
I loved the movie, thought it handled well, being honest about yourself and your past.
all that matters is that shes wearing yelenas jacket through all of infinity war
Glad that i wasnt the only one who noticed that
So many pockets!
So cool right
@@DJ-pv3fm It can fit so many things, you wouldn't even know.
You mean they decided to make that yelenas jacket after infinity war.
FINALLY! Someone on youtube actually understands the characters story arc and why the BW movie is important. Absolutely fantastic review👏🏼
I know it's frustrating when 99 percent of Black Widow movie reviewer, miss the point. Great movie.
the problem is she didn't have her own movie it a bit hard to understand her character arc.
I know right, tons of people are just focused on "dEr uH diS should hAvE cOmE oUt YeArS aGo"... "wE aLweDy kNoW sHe dIeS"
Which is silly given that we literally had a trilogy of prequels about Darth Vader even though we know he dies.
We've had tons of movies for decades about characters who's fate we know that are prequels.
People miss the point when they start ranting off on some emotional crap that completely misses the point of the film; and really just deprive themselves of enjoying one last adventure we got to go through with Natasha Romanoff
The movie may be "important" to fill in some character development but i think the characters still falls flat and feels like the drive to give her agency is forced. Plus they ruined Taskmaster.
Ikr
Didn’t realize Loki called her out on drakovs daughter wild
Ikr, that's some great planing
That’s because they planned on doing a solo movie early on but the Marvel execs were afraid that a female hero movie wouldn’t succeed until Wonder Woman saw the success it did. This should’ve came out after Civil War
Same bro, found out just a few weeks ago :)
I never forgot Loki's lines in Avengers when him and Natasha were talking. At the time I thought he was saying she was Drakov's daughter though. Just like on Vormir the Red Skull said she's the daughter of Ivan, but since they spoke on her mother during Black Widow and how she died I wonder what happened to her father?
Yea I took it has he was saying she was drakovs daughter
This was such a fantastic analysis of Black Widow!
I know right?
Better than marvel itself
this job is for marvel to do thru the story telling
This movie was so unnecessary
then u dont know anything bout comic books
This is why Marvel is making good movies, we are seeing consistency in the characters.
Meanwhile other studios are scrambling to copy Marvel with Cinematic Universes and end credits and fail then do half reboots and redos and alternate cuts LMAO
Note: I know Marvel isn't the first to do end credits, but they have certainly re-popularized it and suddenly we see it in other franchise films more... suddenly.
I almost feel like you’re analysis on Black Widow should be attached to the movie. Thanks, it’s given me a better appreciation for the movie as well.
Cause the movie sucks🥱. You have to make up a big story about her to make the movie half tolerable.
@@lastlime3792 It's not "made up" it's called contextualizing it. That's not something your boyfriends like critical drunk, quarter Pounder, or G+G will do. No they will dependably pump out hate videos.
Someone tell Disney Plus to add this to the Extras.
The analysis by screen crush is always spot on.
Even when I don’t enjoy something, the analysis makes it more tolerable, more relatable.
...
I can’t stop thinking about how good her character progression could’ve been if Black Widow came out after civil war. When I was watching infinity war, I kept wondering why I felt such a disconnect with her character, and it never occurred to me how much time actually passed between her being on the run to her fighting against thanos. There was so much growth that happens in Black Widow, and her arc never felt as complex as the rest of the avengers coming into the Infinity war/endgame storyline.
I’m glad she got her time to shine as one of the OG avengers, but it feels too late. Her story ended with endgame, and I think it was a big risk to push the movie back so far and to not have this progression happen before her death.
Blame Ike Perlmutter. He was head of Marvel Studios until 2015, and wouldn't let women or POC lead films get greenlit. If it ever feels like the MCU is playing catchup on woman/POC representation, they literally are doing exactly that.
For people who get to the MCU late, they will get the privilege of seeing all the movies in proper order and get a better viewing experience than us OG fans who watched the movies in the order they were released.
It feels like a slap in the face that they released it a few years after endgame. But I don't think it's too late for it to solidify her character arc. I see it more as a reward. Showing who she truly was in those final two installments of the infinity saga. In a way, it's like the giant funeral Tony received in Endgame. This was like a swan song for her showing just how much of a true hero she was underneath. You don't have to like it, but just try to appreciate that it's finally here and it works if you let it.
I think MCU never did justice to the black widow as a character and Scarlett as an actress, how it is possible that Yelena's character takes all the credit of the movie just for being fun. Natasha never was a comedic character she always were more dark and mysterious one. It's unfair people expectations to be a comedian and a funny fiction movie.
@@fabioladantes8479 Right now the MCU cares more about the MCU then any individual character. So if one character has to get screwed or sacrificed to make the MCU more successful it will be. With the multi-verse individual characters will be less important. Gone are the Tony Stark days where one character is the heart of the universe. That gives the actor who plays them too much power.. like RDJ had. And if that actor dies like Black Panther.. it can compromise the whole MCU. The multi-verse is designed to give the actors less power because now they can be removed or replaced if they demand too much money, power, or influence.
This is by far the best video about Black Widow. All of the others I have seen, even some good ones just don't "feel" right. This makes sense. Thanks for the great video.
interesting that many dude reviewers slam the black widow movie. it was great! and I never would have guessed who taskmaster was! loved it.
@@scph321 interesting that you want to push a gender bias agenda here. I am girl and this film was on a level of the first thor movie. Still entertainment thanks to the actors, but the story and plausibility went down the drain, even for comic book standards.
the sexist men complaining about the gender of taskmaster and they wonder why feminism exists
I concur. Screencrush film analysis is pure academic bliss.
Exactly thank you there are so many stupid reviews on CZcams
This video gives a better send off to Black Widow than the movie did. Thank you for reminding us how awesome her character is.
Only if you need CZcams videos to explain things 🤷🏻♂️
The movie couldn't be used to summarize her character arc bc it requires multiple movies. Its purpose was to fill in the gap to make her arc more complete. Can't criticize the movie for what it is.
Yeah! It really does. Ryan is awesome at this. 🥰
@@peace4myheart no it does not requires multiple movies to make a better film than this trash we got
@@nakachinjah7240 oh boy can’t please everyone I see
I was heart broken in Endgame when Nat died, but after watching Black Widow it really did give her sacrifice more meaning and brought a little closure to us fans.
This review had me in tears just about every minute. I never appreciated Nat's character in the MCU but now I sure do. Oh how I wish she responded to Yelena's whistle in the post credit scene of the movie.
Damn it. Now I'm even more sad that she sacrificed herself.
This was a really good dive and cool way to look at her character. Since she hasnt had her own movie, her growth has been in little pieces over many movies. By pulling all of these clips together, you really see how much growth Natasha had. Thanks for a great video.
I always felt Winter Soldier was as much a Black Widow movie as a Captain America movie, even though they didn't call it out as such. There was tremendous character development for her in the movie.
@@Smd3580 I felt the same way! I remember scenes with the two of them more than any of the others.
Her last moments make me cry. Every time. Scarlet full on nailed it and Clint's grief just adds to the pain. We watch him lose his best friend and it's crushing.
Have you seen Hawkeye? Its an extension of that. The whole series, I think, is a loving tribute to Natasha. And its perfect.
In point of fact, Nat did hesitate, if only for a moment, before releasing all the Hydra/Shield files. I think Scarlett Johansson played that scene very well and that hesitation let the audience know there were things in her past she didn't want revealed. But she only hesitated for a moment because she was willing to pay the price to do what she thought was right.
K, this made me tear up! This philosophical breakdown is heartwarming and impressive!
Same… Ryan did it again!
Cringe it's a movie
I started tearing up too. I had no idea why.
@@fearless3073 so it can still be emotional
@hoss 403 how
this character study alone was a million times more compelling and emotional that the black widow movie itself. I love how passionate and touching you are whenever you want to convey these beautiful stories!
This is an incredibly well thought out and emotionally gripping essay. You had me in tears 5 times. Thank you for putting this together.
Couldn't have said it better.
If they released Black Widow film right after Civil War before Infinity War, her sacrifice would mean much more in the theaters during Endgame. Boy this movie is a lot better than Captain Marvel, ngl.
That's what I've been saying! BW is way better than captain marvel
@@charlenejefferson4056 no the hell it wasn't lol . Not even close . It was terrible
@@edashmusix No Captain marvel is garbage🤮🤮.Black widow good movie
You’re really great at connecting all the dots to see the bigger picture & your breakdowns really enhance my perspective on the main themes & storylines. It’s awesome storytelling of storytelling!
I'm not crying!! You're crying!! Why am I crying!!!
This video is so moving
Stupid, sneaky ninjas cutting onions while we are watching CZcams
Yup, I’m crying like a baby 🥺
The best overview analysis of Natasha's journey through the Marvel onscreen storylines. You cut to the heart of the character perfectly. Bravo!
I always loved Black Widow, and for more than just the fact that she's played by Scarlett Johansson, but now I have a whole new level of appreciation of the character because of this movie, and this video solidified it.
ScreenCrush quickly became one of my favorite channels.
Florence Pugh killed it as Yelena. Love her and the way she kicked butt
Hot too
She is quite thick to be moving that fast and fighting like that lol. When she was acting out the pose to Nat it was apparent how uncomfortable she was in that dress let alone fight action sequences the whole movie. The stunt double was noticably skinnier haha
@@ZaberAnsaryOfficial funny how she explained her period while piloting the aircraft LOL
@@ZaberAnsaryOfficial Her uncomfortable movements when mimicking Natasha’s pose was done on purpose. For comedic value and effect.
Damn, this is the only channel i trust when explaining things
Can I just say, thank you for this really insightful, in-depth and well-rounded review of BW. I've seen a few reviews - notably by men - who really missed the point of what the film represented, the nuances, and the character journey of Natasha. I know this is really stupid but your video made me cry lol, like finally someone gets it, gets the significance of Natasha's story and her film, and the weight of her sacrifice and autonomy in End Game. I wish I could thumbs up this more haha.
i love the respect and appreciation for this heroine. i never understood where she fit in the avengers team bc she was always set up to be the romantic interest. i watched her solo movie a couple days ago and the opening scene was brilliant. really illustrated how horrific her early life was.
I wish you'd been in the writers' room for the Black Widow film.
Would love any character spotlights you have bandwidth to produce. Wishlist: Rhoadie, Peggy, any character from Black Panther (Killmonger, M'Baku, Nakia...the rhino, I am ready)
12:20 this is the exact reason why i loved the Taskmaster reveal to be Antonia. i dont get why people were so frustrated about it. It seem that what matters most to them is to be comic-accurate rather than to serve the story. but if given the chance, i'd say it would also be better if the movie showed Antonia to have real feelings as well rather than just straight angry face.
I think it would have been better if Antonia actually had hatred towards the person that burned her to crisp rather than being brain controlled, would have made a much better character.
So spot on. Its all about choice. The Widows had their choice taken away, and Natasha took it back. Even better, through Yelena and the other Widows she saved, they're going to give more girls their choice back. It's a beautiful story, and thank you for presenting it so compassionately.
I really loved this analysis. I didn't expect to like Black Widow's movie but I actually really liked it. I think it reminded a lot of people of how sad but heroic and as you said, beautiful her sacrifice was in Endgame.
this is a generous reading of MCU natasha that wouldn't be possible without each film retconning & cherrypicking something about the previous films. that being said, with the cinematic universe to date, it's a well-reasoned and compelling examination of her character that fills in a lot of what directors chose not to connect
I feel like if you took the Black Widow solo film stuff out of this video by Ryan, it would be the exact same thing. That’s a testament to how great of a character she was in the MCU leading up to her solo film, and how pointless the solo film ended up being. I got nothing more about her character from this solo film. Her arc was already well-established. She was already fully-realized, hence why her death in Endgame hit so hard.
A character like Wanda still had an origin story to be explored, while characters like Bucky and Sam had new angles to explore in light of Steve’s death. Black Widow though? No. If they did a very interesting, creative series on her like with what they did with Loki, then fine, but a solo film this late is just so pointless. Hell, they could’ve made this into a Disney+ version of The Americans and I would’ve been happier than what we got in this solo film.
@@KevinWidesouls Well we got more Natasha, got see a little bit of how she became the Black Widow and most important of all, we got an introduction to her sister Yelena which is just AWESOME!!!! and on top of that we get to see even more of Yelena in future Marvel shows/films which is AWESOME!!!.
@@KevinWidesouls The reason this video was made was because of the solo film. It literally brought it all home. Had the film not highlighted the importance of her character her characterisation would’ve gone over the majority of the people’s heads and the significance of her death would’ve been forever overshadowed by Tony’s. We actually get details on her origin and what happened with her and Hawkeye and made me appreciate her relationship with Cap that much more. This film was necessary to complete her arc and show her significance within the MCU and the Avengers.
@@leeramer171 that’s the point Lee. It felt like a movie just to Introduce yelena when the point was to give black widow the attention she deserves
@@designerdiva423 agreed.

Wow, beautiful masterclass on Natasha’s character development.
Ryan,
I just wanted to thank content creators like yourself. You take the time to appreciate a lot of the minor nuances, storyline arcs, call backs and homages. It’s channels and videos like this that make me grateful to be a fan. Thanks again
Might be your best video yet. Beautiful character analysis.
You did a wonderful job putting this together. Of course I’d love to see videos of every character.
This was incredibly well done, I’ve heard lots of conversations about her character being all over the place though out the MCU. This summed it all up perfectly though and gave me a new appreciation for her character. 🙏
This video make me love Black Widow even more. She was so important to the MCU we all love. thanks, Ryan!
Thank you for making this. You made me appreciate the movie a lot more.
best analysis of the character's journey I've seen.
Oh my.. very good analysis.. enlighten her whole arc.. RIP Natasha Romanoff, long live Black Widows
...I think Black Widow is my favorite character now. That was a damn good video.
Did Yelena also get snapped? If so this would be even more heartbreaking when you watch Natasha in Endgame.
I am sure Nat's whole family got snapped. Because after everything that happened and the fact that Nat hasn't seen any of them since she left them at the end of the BW movie, I believe she would have gone to be with them rather than moping around the Avengers Compound. Also, when you watch every one of her scenes in Endgame, now knowing she lost all the Avengers family AND her Russian family to the snap, her emotion and her lines of desperation to bring back everyone are so much more raw.
Best video essay. Great analysis! Definitely dropped a tear or two 😭🤧
You are such a good analyst. I love your work. The way you explain everything feels better.
Great summary of Black Widow over 11 years. And, you have pieced everything together so well. Love from Singapore
17:32 I don't think I can see this pose again without laughing.
The tribute Nat deserves. Why am I crying? 😭
Ryan, this is the best video you’ve made in a while, and you’ve been pouring out quality content week in week out!
I love how well defined her character arc is presented across this canon of movies. And I agree, that I enjoyed Black Widow so much because her character is so real to me in a fantastic setting.
These videos are your best quality and honestly the main reason I follow your channel. You're the best one around for these analyses, keep it up.. and thank you!
Really good breakdown “Black Widow” gave me all the feels too…..
"She became ... one of the most human and compelling characters of the MCU"
... and then they killed her.
Right. Like what was the point other than sex appeal in the beginning and then you give us this great story. Come on Marvel hire people who actually want characters to shine
.... and then they opened a way for her to come back through the multiverse if necessary.. Don't count her out. We were upset about Gomorrah as well and look how that turned out. Time travel and multiple universes open all possibilities. Overall, Marvel plans at least 10 to 15 years in advance. Just think about how long ago they introduced Adam Warlock being made in GOTG part 1 and we have not seen any of him... Things will come when they come with Marvel. Their writers have the storyboard that extends for at least a century lmao!
She died for a cause she believed in, pretty noble end I believe.
@@OroraMonroe
She’s not coming back lmao
This has to be one of the best breakdown/analytical breakdowns I’ve ever seen!! Great work!!
your character breakdowns give the movies a new layer of complexity and beauty, cant wait to watch more like this
Ant Man reference: He’s kinda good at this.
I know right!
Rocket said that not ant man
And actually the quote is "he's really good at this" lol
I def think it should have came out sooner during that timeline. It explains so much and really would have made people understand her actions and progression more in the other movies.
I so appreciate the nuanced reflections Ryan/the ScreenCrush team share. I watch a few different breakdown videos and, while they're fun, I connect with and appreciate yours most. You provide the background context from the comics, as well as the potential social and psychological meaning of the characters and stories, which I thought was very appropriate and much needed for this film, in particular.
Very well compiled Screen Crush!! Loved it.
F9 : "It's All For Family"
BW : " Hold My Beer"
I would love a breakdown of Loki done like this!
Absolutely brilliant Tribute Ryan. Thank you !!!
this was such an impressive analysis of her character, great job.
i enjoyed the movie very much. AND I liked the Taskmaster "twist". I think people who are complaining about it might be under the impression or wished that this movie had to establish and develop the character more, but this wasn't a Taskmaster movie, it only presents an origin, and the possibilities are open from here on out. I think they made the right call. The movie was clearly more focused on introducing Yelena and on what Ryan said in this video, and did a great job at that. I also want to see more of the Red Guardian!
This was still a Natasha movie. It wasn't a Yelena movie. The writing of Yelena and casting of Florence Pugh actually worked really well. I, too, would love to see some Soviet Super Soldiers, if not a movie, there's always a show, or even What If?
Natasha was the unspoken stronghold of the avengers. Rest in Paradise, Black Widow.
Dude, you made this video so wholesome. A real tear jerker
Man I’m tearing up! Amazing video
She will forever be looked at differently in every film from now on.
She dead
“She can make the ultimate choice”
Can she tho? Cause if Barton had jumped it would’ve caused a Nexus event and the TVA would’ve personally pushed Nat to her death 😂
No, they'd take Clint and reset the timeline. No need to murder natasha
LOL
14+ mln timelines erased by TVA?
okay this is funny, caught me off guard haha
Maybe thats how tva got all those soul stones
That was most excellent, Ryan. You made me cry…
Absolutely fantastic. Wonderful job!
What a great video this is such a well-made video on black widows MCU legacy
This review of BW actually brought me to tears. Bravo! 👏🏻♥️ After several re-watches of the Marvel movies, Natasha has become my favorite character. She hung in with gods and superheroes with no "super powers" except her mind and her badass moves. Her sacrifice in End Game was tragic, heartbreaking, and beautiful.
What a piece of work you have done here, my friend! Amazing!
Thank you for explaining Black Widow. It all makes sense now.
I love Natashas whole story in the MCU.
Glorious purpose. Everyone has one or is trying to find one.
Really one of the best character analyses I have heard so far. Thank you.
Great video! Love the way you put her whole story together. This makes all her choices throughout the MCU mean more to me.
I think it would’ve been much more compelling for Taskmaster to hate Nat and not be mind controlled, so that the consequences for her actions weren’t easily fixed with those vials
I agree.
I genuinely wanted her to use the vial, and it to not work.
If I were in the Marvel writing room;
“So then Natasha lets go and dies”
“That is a shit plan”
Lol.
She died for a cause she believed in, which is her entire arc, how is that shit?
@@chase.was.h3r3 just because she probably won’t return and she deserved better. Like to go down swinging, or even a proper funeral on screen.
@@MasterOrona fym go down swinging? would you rather have seen her die by the hands of ebony maw or some shit? she had a great character arc, and her death was both heartbreaking and noble, which is exactly what you would want out of any major character's death. she got her redemption, she got what she wanted, and she died for a cause, which was her ENTIRE PURPOSE.
That was great Ryan. A great explanation of Natasha and her story .
This adds so much perspective that I have a whole new appreciation for the character and Black Wodw's arc. Nice job.
What's always impressed me with the MCU was the depth and humanity (even with robots, trees, and raccoons) of it's characters. That was certainly the case with Black Widow.
💯
Nat would be at home in Fast and Furious. The number of times family was mentioned in BW convinced me of that.
Such a fantastic review of her life and journey. Love her, love this video!
BRAVO!!!!!!! That was amazing! I love your content and your insights Ryan! Thank you!
It's weird, I understand the character, Scarlett is great a great actress and her story arc is well developed. I just can't associate with her or care about the character, no matter how much I try. I seem to be more invested in Nebula and want to see more of her in upcoming MCU productions.
I mean Nebula is objectively more relatable than Natasha
I'm the opposite, I understand nebula is a good character but I can't find myself to care about her whereas black widow I'm heavily invested

Probably best review I've seen from you. You tied it all together perfectly. Well done
Well, if scarlet johansson is ready to play the role again, we can do a phone call to TVA.
You never know, in another Timeline perhaps it was Barton that made the sacrifice and Natasha was forced to watch him fall. Maybe they can both win by bringing Natasha over from that Timeline.
[OffTopic] if this new taskmaster gives up being a taskmaster...
i feel like val is gonna take inspiration from this project and makes their own taskmaster with a random former shield agent, thus making a new plot

So good! Loved seeing Natasha’s whole arc put together. Well done!
It's sad the moment you realize this is probably the last time we are going to see black widow in a marvel movie 😭.
The last time we’ll see Johansson as Black Widow. I think Pugh shows a ton of promise in carrying the W forward.
I want to know what happened to all those other widows.
Heard one of them is going to be on shang chi fighting in the tournament
Probably going to be part of the next 'Big Army' to fight the bad guy at the end of the arc
Great job!! The movie gave so much context, and you really stitched all of it together!
