  • Paul Lubliner conducts a scouting trip to the location where Fox filmed the 1965 crash of the Gemini 12...Red Rock Canyon in California's Mojave Desert. Plans are made to restage the crash with a 1:1 replica of the original Gemini miniature. The big day starts with the screw assembling the rigs and wire for the Gemini's flight. But it's not all smooth sailing!

I have always thought it was one of the most beautiful sequences of any science-fiction film ever done and you guys are reliving it and bringing it back to life for all of us ...what a wonderful gift! Thank you so much for all the work and these wonderful videos!

Amazing! I'm almost jumping out of my chair! OMG, the crashing scene is one of those stand-alone, stand-out moments in this kid fan's life. Throughout the decades it's always made me feel giddy, I just can't help it. That particular scene inspired me to draw umpteen drawings throughout my childhood & teen years of different spaceships' final moments before they struck the surface of a planet. They were my "crash landing" phase of my artistic phase. And since then even to this day if I see watch a movie with a crash-landing scene my mind's eye always goes back to the iconic LIS Jupiter/Gemini glide through the pinnacles. Trust me, nothing compares.

Good Grief Donald... I, Mike, Glen and Adam, we were all tense as all get-up the entire time in order to get the footage in the can AND before the (weather reported) wind started blowing (gusts reached 60MPH as we were striking the shoot) and also not fall off the top peak (where I was situated while hanging onto the upper tower the entire time!) In addition, angst re: that the miniature NOT fall onto the rocks and get smashed (that almost happened) and basically survive. Then the anxiety over anticipating packing it all up and the seemingly innumerable 2/3 mile hikes with heavy gear in tow back to the vehicles.
Afterwards Glen told me "You had to see it running down the wires, ....it looked REAL". That from were he was situated. I only saw it (obviously) from directly behind the ship on the top of the peak and tried very hard to not let the thing smash into the lower tower. As for a "Wonderful Time", --- well, uh, okay.

Is this bitchin or what? Just watched this for the 5th time and it doesn't get old. Life long modeller and fan of sci-fi across the board. Grew up on this stuff and always wanted a kit of this ship, but they didn't exist back then. (But at least I had the Remco robot and the rifle.). I was living in the LA area in the 80's and considered bidding on the model, but chickened out cause I was sure I would be out bid, after the $500 minimum bid, which would have been all I had. I was pissed when no one else bid on it! I could've had it! But it ended up in the right hands, Paul, cause I don't know if I could've done the fantastic job you did. I think I dodged a bullet, seeing what you went through restoring it. Well, now I have several models of the Jupiter, from the little diecast job up to the big Moebius kit, which I just got 2 months ago. Glad I didn't build my big Lunar Models kit yet, cause now I'm gonna make it into the Gemini 12, after your videos built a fire under me! It will be a good companion piece to the Moebius Jupiter model. I also have 7 inch vacuform from SFMA to build as a Gemini with a scratch built launch gantry as seen in the show. Since the Moebius kit has TWO fusion cores, I will use the one with the fins extended for the Gemini and the one without for the Jupiter. To re-create the segmented light diffuser inside the viewport as seen in the auction photos- and I assume in the show-I'm using a simple plastic sowing bobbin holder, just right for this 1/35th scale kit. The "shower curtain" look on your restoration is interesting, but I wanted to see how accurate I could get to the filming model, including the lighting system. And thanks for giving me what I believe is the most accurate version of the navigation scanner dish in the top dome, though we're left to scratch our heads on how this can be reconciled with the nav dome in the ship is shown rising up from the deck and into the upper dome, having seen it both ways on film. (?) Anyway, as a modeller and retired filmmaker and SF fan, you've gotten me excited to get back to my Lost in Space models again! I also have an 81/2 inch vacuform from Lunar Models and THREE of the 1-foot Polar Lights kits to build 3 ways: Flight mode, Landing mode and Static display mode, with complete interior and using the diecast Chariot and Space Pod in their respective places in the ship. And that's not to mention my Trend masters Jupiter, the Robot in several scales, and the regular models of the Chariot, Space Pod, and The Derelict. (And that's not to mention the rest of my stash of models on all the other movies and tv shows!). I won't run out of work anytime soon! Anyway, thanks so much for sharing this story with all of us, as I for one always wondered what happened to this model after the auction all those years ago. And thanks for giving me a little kick in the ass to get back to work on this project! (So many models, so little time!) I know I will be watching your videos several more times for inspiration when I'm working on this, as well as my DVD'S of the show. Despite the silliness, we couldn't look away from the great eye candy of the show, which still remains a closet nostalgic guilty pleasure for those of us who were there back then. Now I would only like to know where or if it's on display for public viewing as Andre said he would like to do. Thanks for the look back!

How about re-posting this ....but: WITH PARAGRAPHS, so that it's legible?
I'm not trying to offend you here, but not one of those saucers what you mentioned is actually a true "Scale Model". The hull's contours are wrong on all of them. The 32 perimeter fins on the Fusion Core are grossly oversized. etc. etc.---They're all simply "toys".
---Were you aware that I produced an exceptionally accurate and extremely limited production GEMINI 12 Museum-level quality replica with fully FUNCTIONAL Fusion Core (as in actually spinning) with the correct number (6) brightly glowing, lighted "orbs"? And those exact scale Fusion Cores were sheathed in gleaming custom made. photo-etched nickel-silver, along with an etched soldered together Nickel-Silver spinning top bubble radar. The hull's master pattern was 3D printed (at 20% full size) from the actual and original filmed miniature Gemini 12 from "Lost in Space" that I had had digitized?

@@paullubliner6221 Hey, Paul, I'm jazzed to get your reply! Sorry about the lack of paragraphs in my messages, but I am new to this whole online thing, and still in the learning curve, trying to figure out how to do this on this phone. At least I put space between the sentences and try to use proper punctuation. I'll get better at it! I have watched All your videos several times, including your recent updates, and love the replicas you made, as well as the restoration of the original. And yeah, you're right: the commercialy available kits are not really accurate, but they're the best we have to work with, and experienced modellers like you and I can do the modifications to make it more accurate. The Polar Lights kits (the 1-footers) are, as you know, a compromise between the various researched contours of the ship, and I love how you give us a good look at the actual, true original configurations in your videos. Matching the kit parts to that is a difficult proposition, but we can still make a good representation of the ship. The Polar Lights kits even explain the difference in the instructions. But I plan to make changes in the various builds. The big vacuform Lunar Models kit seems to have the bottom half closest to the shape of the Gemini 12; not perfect, of course, but acceptable. I can file down the fins on the fusion core to make them more accurate, and enlarge the viewport to match the Gemini, and other little touches. This goes for the little 7-inch vacuform as well. I'm building one of my three Polar kits in 1/48 scale and pairing it with the Chariot from the Cyclops kit, as seen in the pilot and first few episodes, and I'm going to modify it to have clear windows instead of decals. This will be flying mode/landed mode without landing legs and no lower decks. The next one will be a 1/72 scale with upper and lower decks and extendable/retractable landing gear. The third one will be a static display where the three levels can be lifted and viewed, with the Johnny Lighting die cast Chariot and Space Pod in the ship as we saw in the show. I may build a fusion core level into this one, to build a Jupiter with everything we ever saw in the ship. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with the big Moebius kit, but haven't decided yet. I was going to do that with the Lunar Models kit, until I saw your videos and knew I was going to have to build the Gemini! So, of course I had to get the Moebius kit to build a Jupiter. You cost me money, Paul! But I don't mind, it's worth it. Meanwhile, the spare lower deck and landing gear parts from kit one will make a custom model of a Testor's S4 UFO, which I'm calling the Jupiter 8, a descendant of the original ship. And my Derelict kit has three Jupiter's in it, at 1/350 scale, so I plan to one with my Enterprise model of the same scale. (Had a vision in my head since I was a kid watching the shows of the Jupiter 2 landing in the hangar deck of the Enterprise! Now I might finally realize it!). And each Jupiter model will include figures to matching scale. So, while it's hard to build a Jupiter that's absolutely 100 percent accurate, it should be remembered that this stuff is for fun and the enjoyment of the nostalgia of it, and that it's possible to become too much of a "rivet counter" in this hobby, which can drive you mad. (Been there!). Anyway, thanks for contacting me, and I would enjoy further chatting with you. Like I said, I'll be watching your videos again and again as I work on this stuff, though my results may be slow in coming. So, as a retired filmmaker, I could talk about this stuff all day, and about your involvement in film prop/model making. But for now, I'll just say thanks for the great stuff, and best wishes to you! And please forgive my lack of paragraphs; I will work on this. Enthusiasticly -Don.

@@user-qy3ml6bv1d The"best one has to work with..." Don, is one's own hands. That's why I do what I do, since one simply can't buy what it is that I want. SO I make it myself. As in from scratch. Today's "Science Fiction" (L.I.S???) plastic model kits (with a handful of exceptions) are no better as scale models than the old Aurora junk of the 1960's. Sorry but I do not get excited by what's "out there".
You are throwing around "1/72" or "1/48" and "1/350" because that's what's written on the box. But that is WRONG. The Polar Lights Jupiter 2 is NOT 1/48 scale Don. That's just an estimate. MUCH BETTER is to do what the old (Hollywood) Studio Prop shops used:
-----The length or diameter of filmed practical miniatures.
The Gemini 12 in these videos is 1/12 scale as in 1" to the foot. So it's a "Four Foot" Gemini 12. The Seaview seen in this video was molded off the original 1/96 scale (1/8" to the foot) or 50-1/2" long BUT was always referred to as the "Four Foot Seaview". I have another Seaview, made from the surviving "8 footer" (as the studio called it) but in reality it's 103 inches long, closer to nine feet than eight! BUT THE ACTUAL DIMENSION(s) was what the studios used as it greatly avoids confusion.
All the non-sense toy company "replicas" (Ahem!) out there, well, the design people rarely bother to measure originals, they just send pictures to China and that's why you get what you get. It's NOT DIFFICULT to build a 100% accurate "Jupiter 2", or a Gemini 12 as I've done, and sold copies of which curiously ...you've entirely ignored.
Honestly this is difficult for me answering you as what I do is as they used to say "professional caliber". While the drek from China is just that, drek. If you actually were in the film industry, you'd know the meaning of that word. They're nothing but kid's toys with at best perhaps a passing resemblance to the filmed miniatures. That just doesn't cut it for me. Sorry but that's my perspective.

    • @paullubliner6221
      @paullubliner6221 Před 2 lety

---Sorry, but the answer to your question is "no".
For what I feel should be obvious, I have no intention of doing that.
Regarding the licensing, an upfront payment as well as royalties were involved. So even IF I were to "sell" the files, it would be a legal/fiduciary quagmire at best. Hence, only finished and Museum Quality limited edition replicas will be sold.
Further, as the files are copyrighted information and they were not in anyway close to being "free" for me to generate, I will not "giving them away". Do please realize that someone had to pay "Q-Plus Labs" to scan the original as well as create all of the many internal "off-sets" of those outer surface files and also develop all aspects of the internal operating mechanisms.
As for your "own" 3D printed copy, that represents only the upper and lower hull itself. The fully operating Fusion Core sheathed in nickel-silver over machined, vacuum-formed acrylic, represents at lest half of this model... and is not included in the 3D printed files. And for many technical reasons, sequenced LED's (chase-lights) are a very poor choice to light the Fusion Core. For example; you cannot cleanly divide 32 (windows) by 6 (points of light).
---That said, the 9.6 inch diameter ship replicas (exactly 1/5th scale) are nearing completion and the order book has been closed for quite some time now.

CGI cannot match the intricacies and details of the sandstone at Red Rock Canyon. Ask an animator and they'd tell you to get some location footage and they'd digitally insert a CGI saucer. It would also be apparent if you know what to look for.

@@joannbarna8235 As far as I am aware, that 12 inch diameter one of a kind, fiberglass miniature is still "At Large". It was built as a Gemini 12, as it has the slimmer profile and larger Fusion Core, but the viewports later and for the series, were reduced in size and the lower windows only suggested by the use of a painted outline.
It was produced as a "long shot miniature" meaning for distant shots as seen when first leaving the Earth at a steep angle of ascent. It can also be recognized when seen throughout the series by the Fusion Core's lights not appearing as revolving points of light as on the larger miniature, (---which they were) but as a rotating "blind". Meaning a disc with openings (or apertures) cut into its sides and bottom to allow the illuminating effect from a single light source to appear to be spinning.
