The ship size conundrum.
The original ship design brief in the unaired pilot episode called for a one level transport vessel. They were never supposed to live in it. The Gemini 12(renamed Jupiter 2) was delivered by Bill Creber. The lift off features that original one level vessel.
The network approved the pilot episode and gave it a series order but demanded changes. The addition of the robot, Dr Smith and that they would live on the ship.
This would essentially mean a complete redesign of the ship to something entirely different.
Instead, the design was just tinkered with only slightly but it would never really be believable unless you tripled the size to give it a second level.
That would then be problematic for an aesthetically pleasing studio set where the majority of the series would be set.
Even as a one level ship, the Chariot is a big stretch. I do not think the ship designer was involved in the chariot design and it's not his fault that is didn't conform to his ship design dimensions. As we know, they didn't bother with accuracy and just went with their imagination.
Thank you!
Maby the chariot was collapsible hence it would fit in the spaceship although the producers either didn't think of that possibility and give us a hint or they've just never deal with the inaccuracy of proportions between the volumes of the spaceship and the chariot!
So many 50’s thru 70’s TV series shows had plenty of “realism” problems. I remember wondering how Star Trek (original series) could go from dead stopped to faster than the speed of light inside of a few seconds. I mean even speeding up to a few thousand MPH in only seconds would reduce all personnel to a thin smear of goo on the back wall of each compartment. The power pack for the Lost-in-Space series robot (a little block about the size of a deck of playing cards) was completely fascinating to me back then! And yet I ravenously ate up every single show, each week!! Like other people, I’m not exaggerating at all when I think back to these shows and I can very honestly say that these shows contributed greatly to my life as a communications/electronics engineer!
Oh, and who has not noticed that in these early space related movies/shows that they would show a USA launched V2 rocket lifting off from the Earth, and then for the remainder of the show the astronauts had two or three stories/levels of spacecraft, each level with a 10 foot ceiling, and each level had about 70 square feet of working space, or more. And the female astronauts were always dressed-to-kill…with immaculate hairdo every single day. Every spacecraft control center had the obligatory 3 or more Dumont oscilloscopes, each weighing 50-ish pounds. In the end…it was all about the plot…and I ate it up as fast as they could deliver each installment!! 😂
@@thomthumbe Did you ever watch UFO in the early 70's? It was really far fetched but I watched anyway.😄
It's Science FICTION. The unwritten contract between program and viewer is that the viewer suspends their disbelief. Many of us knew about the ship size conundrum from early on. The massive galley and sleeping quarters on the lower deck and the bays for the Chariot and the Space Pod. We just accepted they were there and moved on.
As a 6-year-old, I was absolutely ENTRANCED by those scenes of the Jupiter 2 crash-landing among the mountains of an alien world! Still impressive today, nearly 60 years later! John Williams' score was brilliant!
always crashing, stupid til 3rd season where they finally get out in space
Lost in Space & Star Trek, my 2 favorite shows as a 6 year old in 1967.
Wonderful series. Whenever I can I watch her. 💋
Amazing considering it was done with real models, not CGI
Really!!! And all that without a single dent
Oh, John Williams's awesome score. Before there was Star Wars there was Lost in Space!
Wonderful series. Whenever I can I watch her. 💋
It is absolutely awesome the Lost in Space sound track from 1960s.
Glued to the floor, in our pj's....in 1965 watching the Robinson's voyage🛸....wonderful time in life...our world has decayed so much... since those days....thank you for this !!! BCM'
The Jupiter 2 back in the mid 60s was, bar none, the greatest ship ever to grace film. It remains so. The highlights of "Lost In Space" were when the Jupiter 2 was in motion.
I loved this ship. I built a dozen Jupiter 2s out of paper plates. They had working hatches, actual windows, interiors, working landing gear, and a dockable space pod.
Not bad for an eight-year old.
I didn't have access to all of the Lost in Space toys & accessories, BUT I did collect the NASA models from the Apollo missions.
I really wish that I could have gotten at least models of The Jupiter 2 & The Robot.
I can see and understand your love of the Jupiter 2. However, my nomination for greatest ship of the 60s is a starship named the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701
I know some will argue for the Enterprise ( and I wouldn't argue it ) but would there have been one if not for the Jupiter2? The Jupiter has a very classic, organic look, as though it's slicing through space. Either way, the sound of the Jupiter's engines is the best effect for a space ship ever!
@@dennisjump8655 I'm in total agreement with you about how neat the Jupiter 2 is, but I'm going to have to challenge your contention that without it, there may not have been an Enterprise. Here's why.
Both Irwin Allen and Gene Roddenbury both came up with a concept for a science fiction television show in 1964. You know the names. Both put them together and pitched them to various networks. Here's where it gets interesting.
When Gene approached CBS, it was supposed to be a simple presentation to the lower echelon. To his surprise, all the network bigwigs attended it, and asked lots of questions. What was suppose to be a 15-minute meeting actually took two hours.
At first, Gene was delighted, figuring that the interest was a sign that CBS was going to pick up the show. That is, until the execs informed Roddenbury that they intended to purchase another science fiction show - which was of course "Lost in Space."
When Gene learned of this, he was furious, figuring the bigwigs at CBS had simply picked his brains at the meeting with no intention of purchasing Star Trek. He remained bitter about this the rest of his life.
Fortunately Desilu agreed to produce Star Trek, which was in turn picked up by NBC. And the rest is history.
The Jupiter 2 and the U.S.S. Enterprise hit the airwaves in 1965 - independent of each other - yet still bringing a great deal of entertainment and enjoyment to the masses.
@@cjmarshall0221 I was going off the fact that LIS aired first in 65. ST was in 66. Didn't know about the back story. Can anyone say that Roddenberry would have been picked up if not LIS ? Did it influence Desilu? Either way, I was a kid ( only 6-7 ) and I loved them both. Thank god for 60's TV.
Professor Robinson was the coolest dad ever portrayed on TV. RIP Guy Williams.
Went on to play zorro. Seashbuckling good looks he had
@@jessiejames7492 He actually played Zorro before LIS but you're right, what a guy..
@@dennisjump8655 thank you fr the info.
he was a real father figure 🙂
Actually, I met Guy Williams, step-father of Toni Catalano who I went to High School with… I’ll tell you, he was anything but and and collected when she crashed his MBZ!
😅😂🤣
Those Wednesday nights at 7:30 in 1965 and 1966 were the most magical times of the week.
It takes me back to when I was a boy, wishing that I could be Will Robinson. There was a positive feeling back then that we've lost.
No more optimism in this culture
Me too and actually I fervently wished to be part of their family and even today (I’m 69) still love them all.
Agreed! It was my favorite program. I always watched from a "portable" black and white
set that weighed a ton.
Dr. Smith was the original professional victim lol. This was great. Also had a special place for Space: 1999
So true
There will never be another Lost In Space. No matter how grand the special effects.
Special effects can't duplicate Dr smith
For sure. I LOVED this show when I was 10 yo . I loved all the crew. I had a wonderful childhood watching LIS, Time Tunnel, Voyage to the botton of the see and being a beatlemaniac.
No....it was truly unique....
sorry to hear that cause i loved the 1999 movie as much as i loved the series from the sixties . But i hated the series from 2018
I watched this as a kid in the early 70's. I had to chuckle at the aluminum foil meteor swarm and just grin and bear the campiness of it all for nostalgic purposes. Then, it came to the end with the clips of the production crew. Someone put a lot of time, love, and energy into making this campy show so that a kid like me would be well entertained all the way to his 50's...
Omg I was just saying someone took quite a bit of time to put aluminum foil on all those rocks lol and then I saw your comment.it was cheesy back then but I loved it then and still do.i got a robot one Christmas but never a Jupiter 2 craft.
And the tinsel radiation belt.
Some of that early John Williams music / score work holds up so well today (like most of his work) Truly a time capsule from my childhood, LOVED this show.
I agree, but he also had a few clunkers. Check out his proposed calypso version as the theme song for Gilligan's Island.
Yes ! They tried to get away from the “same old” music in early season 2 and 3, but could never get away from John Williams great first season scores!!
@@cjmarshall0221 The New Theme music for Season 3 will always be fondly remembered! This in itself made up for no other John Williams scores in the last season!
I couldn't agree more! In my opinion, Lost in Space featured the best music ever composed for a TV series. Even at the tender age of 4, it left an impression on me and began my life-long love of John Williams and film music, in general.
@@BrianBellia Exactly, and he though Williams did great work, and became more famous for that later work, his LIS scores are still my favorites! I’m not even sure I would have liked this show, without his music in the background! It was integral to me!
As a 12 year old back in 1965, I was absolutely enthralled by everying in LIS. Especially the first season. The Jupiter II was unique and spectacular--both inside and outside. The oh-so-cool sounds of the engines, and the fantastic shots of it swooping down over the mountains of the alien planet. So I really appreciate this video! And the ending was so sweet!
We made Jupiter 2 control panels out of sheets of cardboard, and propped them up at the bow window. Used to throw ourselves back and forth across the living room as our ship went out of control, battling to reach the controls all while doing our best with the sound effects.
Us too
Well done! Thanks for helping me escape back to my youth, and a much simpler time!!
Wonderful series. Whenever I can I watch her. 💋
Obviously a 'labour-of-love'; this was a pleasure to watch and an 'experience'.
Aaaa
When Irwin Allen spent money on an effect, he wore the hell out it.
Мне бы такой летающий корабль!!!
They all did back then. Most of the VFX from S2 Star Trek was reused footage from S1, 1st 10 episodes.
Sulu looked over his shoulder at the Captain with the view screen showing different things, but the same actor shot from Naked Time used over a dozen times.
Yeah, he definitely got his money's worth out of 15 seconds of film.
I also noticed the pod sounded a lot like the 1960’s Batmobile.
Loved this show. Especially Dr Smith. He made the show. What I never understood was why they didn't make the ship look more like the right size. There is no way that Chariot would ever fit in that ship. How did they get the chariot in and out of the ship? Also that lower deck looks pretty small to fit anything. They also never showed the robot when he had to go up the steps on the landing gear.
I always loved the sound of the Jupiter 2 engine as it took off. Thanks for this!
What amazing special effects, brilliant, and those designers and set builders need an applause for their work 👍🚀🎥
This is thee GREATEST!!!!! the overriding dialogue from scene to scene!!!!
I love the sound effects of the Jupiter 2 flying through space or landing and taking off... COOL
I was always amazed as to what they could fit inside that ship.
But really, most TV shows (and some movies) have "bigger on the inside". The Brady Bunch house, Seinfeld's apartment, the hotel in Petticoat Junction, virtually all airliners, Archie Bunker's home and bar, the Stephens' house in Bewitched. etc. We just notice it more when it's a moving vehicle.
excellent work.. when i was young - 55 years ago , i loved this programm.. today i keep watching this serie in Argentina over youtube and facebook
When my sister and I were young we would get two chairs. Place them in front of the television and pretend that we were piloting the Jupiter 2 . This show brings me good memories.
That music is from The King- John Williams.
This show propelled my life into astronomy and music.
Forever grateful..
It was quite a ride...one that inspired me to become a filmmaker...I salute the men and women who brought us this grand adventure every week. I hope I can do the same for future generations.
Good luck to you sir, I wish you lots of love and success in your adventures.
Wonderful series. Whenever I can I watch her. 💋
my eyes water over the amount of craftsmanship and devotion put into this all-time classic. this is how it's done, and not one dime more will ever be asked.
I'm a kid again. I thank you and really enjoyed this.
My favorite all time series growing up! I have all the toy's re-released including Robbie The Robot, I was fortunate to spend a full day in 2003 at a Lost in Space convention in Ohio with Don West (Mark Goddard), Bob May (the man inside the Robot) & his wife. Johnathan Harris (Dr. Smith) was scheduled to be there but unfortunately passed away in 2002, so they had a tribute to him. Bob May carried my daughter around in his arms like she was his! What a Magical Amazing time we spent with them that will always be in my memories forever!
The Lost In Space robot was Robot B9, not named Robbie. Robbie the robot was from Forbidden planet.
Most excellent!! The Jupiter 2 -- Best spaceship in the galaxy....
This is great. "Visit to a Hostile Planet" was such a great episode, and the ending of the series was somehow perfect even if it was never intended to be a finale.
There should have been a final episode in which the Jupiter 2 either reached Alpha Centauri or returned to earth.
"Visit to a Hostile Planet" was, to me, the best episode.
@@GroomLeader The Hungry Sea.
@@altfactor CBS had a bad habit of cancelling popular shows with no finale: Gilligan's Island, Lost in Space, Gunsmoke, The Incredible Hulk...all ended without any real resolution.
Wonderful series. Whenever I can I watch her. 💋
I love this show! I could watch reruns all the time!
The music score in this show was stunning
These are the VOYAGES OF THE FAMOUS JUPITER TWO . Always and forever remembered .
Gota love the crumpled aluminium foil being blown at the Jupiter 2.
I also see what looks like... popcorn? Regardless, as a kid, I enjoyed the heck out of this series. It was the best!
I never noticed that. Now it's all I can see !
Seeing scenes from the first season in colour was an OMG moment. The music was ahead of its time, got it all on CD's even the Jupiter 2 engines. This is wonderful, thank you :)
Wonderful series. Whenever I can I watch her. 💋
Quite the tribute for the Jupiter 2!! Still my favorite spaceship to this day! The J2 was like the extra cast member to me, (like the 5th Beatle)! I always got very excited to see it blast off, land, crash, or just flying through space!! Even though they reused the S1 crash footage over and over, even playing it backwards for a lift off, I never cared because it was just so awesome! Thank you for putting this together!
BRAVO TO ALL❤
The snippets of dialogue from various episodes definitely gives a feel for the persistent creepiness of the original show. Even when it was otherwise campy, silly, manic or whimsical, as a viewer you never lost sight of the danger that was lurking around every corner---or that might be. I can't think of another science fiction show that ever captured this element of "fear of the unknown" the way that Lost in Space did.
BEST DAMM THING I'VE EVER SEEN ON U TUBE . BRINGS BACK SOOOO MANY MEMORIES.. WELL DONE SIR. OH TO BE ON THAT SHIP WITH PENNY 😀😀😀😀
Penny was cute but how old was she? Don't forget gorgeous Judy!
By the way, Oct. 16, 1997 was a Thursday. I Googled it.
Back then i liked girls older than me , but today, well that has changed. Funny how that works..........
Simply the best television series of my childhood. Bar none!
Oh my delicate back! I love Lost in Space to this day. It was my childhood number 1 viewing!
One of the coolest spaceships of all time, is the iconic saucer of the Jupiter 2.
💯
Wonderful series. Whenever I can I watch her. 💋
You never forget the sound of the Jupiter 2's engines
Neither did the producers of the original Planet of the Apes film, another Fox property. Those are the same sound fx Charlton Heston's ship makes as it crashes in the opening scene.
Is that where it came from?
The Time Tunnel often made that same sound.
When that landing gear came down in 1965, I was hooked for life.
absolutely wonderful this first season.... the beautiful music by "Johnny" Williams brings it all back to me...watching it with all the family....bought that whole season over 20 years ago..brought tears to my eyes...
Thank you for that. I seriously adored that show. For all its silliness (especially season 3) and some if its hokey scripts, it was an amazing tv experience. I miss the innocence of 60s television. The sheer joy is used to provide. In today’s television there is very little joy.
The first give episodes, created as a pilot and with a good budget were undoubtedly the best.
Agreed! When they made Dr. Smith into a fool, the show was doomed. The Keeper episode still haunts my dreams/nightmares. And I’m 63 yrs old
Without a doubt the best part of this video is in the beginning when the Jupiter 2 launches from Alpha Control and in the background you hear Dr. Smith yelling. I’ll never forget that sound of him screaming! You gotta love it! Thanks for posting
That was the very first of many, many, many screams to come from Zach.
@@Nathan-jq1uw yes you’re right. And almost always when he screamed he would pull poor Will in front of him!
@@jamespinto872 Has anyone done a compilation video of the times he used Will as a shield? One of my favorite You Tube videos is one of all the times Smith used the word "creature."
@@Nathan-jq1uw LOL !!! Another great Zach one liner was " we’re doomed! "
@@jamespinto872 One of my favorites is at the end of "The Promised Planet" when he sheds his hippie wig and scolds Will: "William how could you? You were going to leave me here with those dreadful cats!"
I had always loved their sound effects and music plus there was always those cool monsters and other assortment of characters
When I was kid, I tried to make my own Jupiter 2 out of cardboard and I would pretend I was on Jupiter 2 flying across my backyard. I realized I was in love with that ship. :)
Excellent. Brought back so any happy memories of watching Lost In Space in the late 60's. The sound of the Jupiter 2 always got me.
Thankyou!
This is intense! I knew it wasn't easy editing the campy elements out. In the beginning the overdubs were scary with Don calling out Smith as the ship continues to go out of control... awesome to include the overdub of the coining of the flying saucer... odd thing is that when I hear the female voice taking control of the ship I think of the evil female robot who came around much later... now I think she is the same robot, but from back then! It works! And the nod from Planet Delta was funny. I didn't see anything about the Anti-Matter world though... I must say, hands down, that the Jupiter Two is my favorite ship! This video captured it's greatest hits (ironically at that!)... a marvel of awesome special effects. The robot, the ship, the chariot, the space pod... that was what made the show. They weren't cardboard props... they were real! The special effects and very hazardous real explosions are amazing! The ending was so emotional with the music and all... wow. This is great! Thank you!
I already see the "Towering Infrerno" beginnings! Another creation of Irwin Allen.
I cried when L.I.S was cancelled. Not becouse of these silly effects but the chemistry Dr.Smith,Robot, and Will Robinson had was great !!
I was obsessed with this show. I’ve watched many of the episodes again on Hulu and my conclusion is that the first episodes and a subset of the others were great works of science fiction and still hold up today. Of course, many episodes in the second and third seasons featuring things like space pirates and carrot people fell into an entirely different category that even as an 8-year old, I knew were kind of stupid.
Dr. Smith: You Lost In Space Genius..This is as wonderful and pheasant under glass. My superb thanks.
There was nothing like it to stir the imagination beyond the stars.
When I was a kid i remember this show, it was popular, those were the days when there wasn't many channels, so you'd know that lost in space comes on Friday night at 8:00pm and I'd be excited waiting for it, thank you for great memory.😁👽🙏
I loved the episodes when they were in space, mostly in season 3..and the start of season 1
I always said this show started great when it was a family adventure. Sadly the focus became the dr.smith show in the middle of the first season.
@@randyacuna3248 agreed, 90% of my interest in the show was the Jupiter and maybe Major West cuz he was cool and of course the robot. when it got campy is when it sucked
@@randyacuna3248 The Lost In Space producers and CBS brass knew that Star Trek was in the works over at NBC, and that it was going to be a serious, SERIOUS Sci-Fi drama, so they decided to go exactly the OPPOSITE way with Lost In Space to give the audience a choice (especially if they had young kids in the family!) I was six when LIS premiered, and that was what I watched. (Actually, we had little choice because we could only get CBS clearly on most nights!) I was 11 when I discovered Star Trek in re-runs after I got home from school. So I guess it worked out perfectly for me!
That scene where the derelict ship opens up and sucks in the Jupiter makes me think of Vger swallowing the Enterprise.
Actually parts of Vger look like an improved version of the derelict..now that you mention it.
Indeed. As the Millennium Falcon was 2 the Death Star. At least Lt Llia and Carrie Fisher were sexy as hell. 😉 RIP 2 them both.
Best music for any sci-fi show
Cool ending showing the crew accompanied by the sentimental music. Fondly remember watching this show after coming home from school in the 1970s, when America valued science and rationality.
Awesome job, I still watch on MeTV, and I’m 59.
Such nostalgia! Loved it!
The best ones are the black and white show's!!. After the first season Lost in Space went campy!.
Fantastic job, I was on the edge of my seat , felt so nostalgic,
loved every second , thank you
I wonder how many times the consoles and wall panels burst into flame over the seasons yet somehow kept working ? That's some tought stuff.
Best show back in that day
A lot of memories. Thanks
Loved this show so much !!!!
The final images are fantastic from the backstage team! Congratulations !!!
As imagens finais são fantásticas da equipe dos bastidores ! Parabéns !!!
Свами согласен!!!
That was marvelous - heartfelt thank you.
I used to get anxious as a kid watching Jupiter 2 coming in at speed over the mountains to crash land.
amazing special effects! you could almost NOT see the wires the jupiter 2 was attached to at 02:42 lol that's why we love this show!
Fun watch! I love the original Lost In Space! This is the best!
This is really great footage that really takes me back to my youth. I was around 5 or 6 when it was on in 67 but definitely remember it being played again in around 72 or 73 when I was 12 which I remember watching every episode from the start. Loved this show
I loved this show. So many memories as a kid.
David, your passion and love for the Jupiter 2 really shines here! Fantastic job!
A look back at the special effects of that time. It is interesting to see how the models were used to get certain shots. The camera crews put a lot of effort into setting up the scenes. The music is also interesting.
Yet the saucer in Forbidden planet was so much more realistic. and that was in 1956.
All four physical versions of the Jupiter 2 are seen in this great collage. The original, flatter-bottomed Gemini 12; the main flying model with landing gear that debuted in the second episode; the "full-scale" mockup that also was first seen in The Derelict, and the crash campsite soundstage set.
This is excellent. I can see all the love that was put into making this. Thank you
All the Lost In Space episodes should be FREE! In return, it would bring up another whole breed of fans... Make it so...
Over a half million views, that's impressive. My all-time favorite TV show
Awesome show as a kid I just loved it.....
Came on at 5 pm weekdays....
And u can bet I was watching it 😁
Thanks.
Loved the old school special effects.
The story was more important.
One my favorite shows , jupiter 2 , chariot , ray guns and jet pack awesome. Still watch it on me tv on Saturday nights.
As a 4 year old little kid back in 1965 this series and the Thunderbirds will remain with me till i too end up in heaven hopefully and not lost in Space.
I had no idea all these scenes existed. I recall more of the conversations and relationships of the characters (including Robot) than the action. The pixel quality of the live actors is stunning in this rendition, far beyond the 200 lines of resolution on a 1960’s B&W television set. Well done!
cool behind the scenes stuff at the end.
I was 8 when the series started, and I loved it. My favorites were when the Jupiter 2 was in flight, it was so cool!
Ahhhh the mighty G12/J2 in all her glory!!!!!!
that show is so awesome i loved it thanks guys
Thanks for the beautiful and funny memories❣️
I was born in 1962 and this show was my favorite. 😜
Série muito boa da minha adolescência e infância de 1965/1974
Great job Dave! Quite Excellent!
Amazing sound editing done for this highlights reel.
David, this is absolutely superb - thank you!
Cool memories, watching Lost in Space as a child in America.
2:05 That alien ship gave me the creeps when I was five, especially when those big door things opened and the Jupiter 2 got pulled in.
Love it - outstanding!
That was some excellent work indeed!
A really nice piece of work, thank you and well done :)
