  • One Way Street is a 1950 American film noir crime film directed by Hugo Fregonese and starring James Mason, Märta Torén and Dan Duryea. The crime film takes place mainly in Mexico.
    Plot
Dr. Frank Matson, a physician, steals $200,000 from the mob boss John Wheeler, after a robbery that Wheeler has pulled off along with Ollie, a member of his gang. Forced to go on the run, Matson also takes Wheeler's girlfriend Laura Thorsen with him.
After hiding out in Mexico, word gets back to Matson that Wheeler knows where he is. He and Laura return to Los Angeles planning to return the money, only to find Wheeler has been shot by Ollie. About to meet the same fate, Matson produces a gun and kills Ollie instead.
Laura is waiting for him at a cafe. As they leave, Matson turns to go phone the airline to get away with Laura, but is hit by a car coming down the one-way street.

Sometimes I can tell from the first few seconds whether or not I'm going to like a movie. As soon as I read that intro quote and saw Marta Toren in a slinky black cocktail dress looking suspiciously out the window while dragging on a cigarette, I knew that this was my cup of hemlock. Every frame, every line, every gesture is noir at its perfection.

Quite the ladies man. Just something Americans find effeminate because a gentleman doesn't fit in with either cowboy or thug culture. President George Bush had the same perception problem during the election.
Throughout her stay in London, Mason would send black actress and singer, Lena Horne breakfast eggs from a French Marans hen a country friend owned. Courtliness usually seen in straight men of the time.

I tell you I loved every moment of this movie and towards the end I was looking forward to showing this to my wife and watching it with her but right at the end it was the most depressing ending to any movie I have ever seen needless to say I will not be sharing this with my wife. All I can think of is the priest and the little boy and all the people in the village waiting for him to return and they were going to be married in the church. I had a bad feeling when they were all talking about it before they left the village that that was a bad sign this ending was even worse then the ending of the Sands of Iwo Jima with John Wayne. I remember watching that as a kid I hated that ending but now this one tops it

Marta Toren was one of the stream of beauties from Scandinavia hollywood was recruiting at the time the most famous of which was Ingrid Bergman . Marta Toren is beautiful and plays her role to perfection . At the age of 29 Toren died while acting in a stage play . If memory serves me, It was a brain hemorrhage which caused her death . Very sad and great loss to the silver screen and stage .

Watching Miss Toren makes me curious as to why she wasn't more prominent in the industry. Dan Duryea plays the "bad guy" roles with such believability. And James Mason is his suave self, as ever. A great Noir directed by the extremely talented & versatile Argentine director/screenwriter (Columbia Univ. graduate) who worked in the US on Westerns & non-Westerns including My Six Convicts, Black Tuesday, Man in the Attic. In Argentina, he directed Apensas in delincuente (Hardly a Criminal), Where Words Fall, From Man to Man, La Mala Vida (Bad Life). In Europe, he directed The Secret of Dr. Mabuse; in the UK, 7 Thunders; & the Spanish/German/Italian co-production, Los Monstros del Terror.
Film historians often cite him for his Argentine Noirs. His much-in-demand talents & abilities to work in many languages with an international cast of distinguished actors/actresses show his popularity, craftsmanship & nuanced directing style.

Such a very well written + directed story! A great deal of attention was paid to the story and script and settings, but then that's no surprise when you know Dalton Trumbo wrote it. I can't believe that I've never heard of this before!
I like Mason a lot, but more than many other other actors, Mason was often especially stiff. But here he's more natural. I'm really enjoying this film! The scenery is excellent too, for a B+W film. They are often very much lacking that way. Even in the ones that do have good scenery and sets, you still can hardly see it. They're always very lacking in depth, texture, and detail. However, even though this is B + W they did their best to give us as much interesting scenery and sets as possible, unlike many noirs, which seem like solid black. I only wish this were filmed in color. It would have been so much better! I do still really like it though.

It's funny you should mention Dalton Trumbo. Have you ever seen "Johnny Got His Gun" It is one of the best films I have ever seen. Haunting. Dalton Trumbo wrote the book.

@@C.E.Thomas1952Great writer, blacklisted and sentenced to prison during the McCarthy witch-hunts. He won two Oscars for Roman Holiday and The Brave One. Kirk Douglas, much to his credit, hired Trumbo during this period to write Lonely Are the Brave and Spartucus. However, he did not write this movie. Lawrence Kimbel was a real guy, not one of Trumbo's pseudonyms.

@@timcountis9368 Thank you so much for writing this. I saw "Johnny got his gun" over 30 years ago and I remember as if it was yesterday how I was stunned into silence for hours afterwards, it was the most powerful anti-war film I had ever seen. And because the film is mostly internal dialogue I was compelled to remember the writer. I am Brit born so Dalton Trumbo was completely new to me at that time and the name was so unusual also. I really don't understand why he is not on the list of the 100 best writers of the 20th century.

I liked the priest, a solid human and character, although I am not a christian but with enough of those values which most people share. My second Marta Toren movie in 2 days and in my imaginings Laura must have returned to that village. Memorable also were the opening lines from "Song of a Fatalist", which I am one.
